Selling a broken or junk BMW X5

NHTSA lists 113 recall campaigns for the BMW X5. That is more than the 3 Series has (104), even though X5 owners have filed about a third as many complaints: 3,410 against 10,099.

An X5 that won't start is a heavy thing to move, and you don't have to. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and the truck comes to it, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Four generations of X5, by the numbers

X5 owners sent these complaints to NHTSA. The count closes on October 10, 2026, so the youngest trucks have had only a short window. A recall's vehicle number is the campaign total, and the X6 and other BMWs are often in it.

E53: model years 2000-2006

Wikipedia says the first X5 was built from 1999 to 2006 and was developed shortly after BMW bought Land Rover. A facelift for the 2004 model year began production in late 2003. These seven years hold 732 complaints.

The 2001 has 160 complaints and 13 recall campaigns, with engine and engine cooling (29) and latches and locks (15) named most. The 2006 jumps to 195, and 93 of those are about air bags.

The air bag recalls on these trucks are serious. Recall 25V748, filed October 31, 2025, covers 2000-2001 X5s that may have a sport steering wheel with a Takata PSDI-4 inflator, which may explode when it deploys. Recall 19V015 covers driver inflators on 2000-2004 X5s along with 2000-2003 5 Series cars. Each carries a do-not-drive warning.

E70: model years 2007-2013

The E70 debuted in July 2006 for the 2007 model year, per Wikipedia. These years hold 1,453 complaints, the most of any X5 generation, and carry between 7 and 19 recall campaigns each. Wikipedia notes that for the 2011 model year the X5 was BMW's third best-selling model, so plenty are still around.

Air bags lead the 2007 through 2010. Five passenger air bag campaigns name these trucks, and all five warn owners to leave the truck parked until it is fixed: 16V364, 17V020, 18V030, 19V017 and 20V016. Several also cover the X6. Driver air bags come under 16V071.

The 2011 and 2012 turn toward the engine. The 2011 has 331 complaints, the most for any X5 year, with 119 about the engine. The 2012 has 295, with 82 engine and 82 air bag complaints. Two campaigns replaced VANOS bolts: 14V176 on 2010-2012 trucks and 23V707 on 2010-2011. The X5 xDrive30i also shares the PCV valve heater recalls 17V683 and 22V119.

F15: model years 2014-2018

The F15 was unveiled on May 30, 2013 and debuted that November, Wikipedia says. These five years hold 472 complaints, fewer than the 2011 and 2012 combined. The 2015 has 152, with 39 about the engine and 19 naming the diesel fuel system. The plug-in X5 xDrive40e from 2016-2018 is covered by recall 24V608, which inspects the water pump connector and adds a shield.

G05: model years 2019-2025, and the new G65

The G05 was unveiled online on June 6, 2018, and the fifth-generation G65 on June 30, 2026. Model years 2019 to 2025 hold 727 complaints. The 2019 has 191, with 57 naming the electrical system. Recall 25V644 replaces the starter on 2019-2020 X5s because it may overheat after repeated start attempts; that campaign also covers the X6, X7 and some 7 and 8 Series cars.

On the 2024, 47 complaints name electronic stability control and 35 name service brakes, out of 145. Recall 24V104 covers 2024-2025 X5s: the integrated brake system may malfunction, and dealers replace it. The 2026 model year has 26 complaints so far.

Should you fix it first?

Before anything else, enter the VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup. Dealers fix open recalls free, and on a 2000-2004 or 2007-2013 X5 an air bag campaign may still be waiting. If one says not to drive, leave the truck where it is; our open recall guide explains selling it that way.

If the problem is the engine, gearbox or suspension, get the repair cost in writing and check the price of a running X5 from that year. If fixing it would use up most of that, selling it broken probably makes sense. Junk truck or SUV covers what changes when the vehicle is this big.

Selling your X5 without fixing it

  1. Collect the details: VIN, odometer reading, what's wrong, and whether it rolls in Neutral.
  2. Request an offer online, or phone (877) 421-6008.
  3. Explain the access. Driveway, garage, street or a shop lot. A low garage roof, a steep drive or a flat tire helps us send the right truck. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep the parts on. The wheels, battery and converter stay, and let us know if anything is already off.
  5. As your X5 is loaded, sign the title, show your ID and pass the driver all its keys. After you sell covers plates and insurance by state.

Questions people ask

Which X5 years have the most complaints?
Through October 10, 2026: the 2011 with 331, the 2012 with 295, the 2008 with 235, the 2006 with 195 and the 2019 with 191. A recent X5 has been on the road too short a time for its count to mean much.
My 2007-2013 X5 has an open passenger air bag recall. Should I drive it to sell it?
No. Campaigns 16V364, 17V020, 18V030, 19V017 and 20V016 warn owners to park those X5s until a dealer swaps the passenger air bag. Dealers do that repair free. If you would rather sell, the X5 can stay put: we buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
Can a truck haul an X5 that won't roll?
Yes. Tell us it won't roll, whether it's in a garage or on the street, and whether the air suspension has dropped, if it has one, so the right truck comes. You sell the whole car as it sits.
