Selling an old or dead BMW Z3
The BMW Z3's complaint file is mostly about the body, not the engine. Structure is the most-named component, in 79 of the 344 complaints Z3 owners had lodged with NHTSA by October 10, 2026. Seventy-seven of those 79 are on three model years: 1998, 1999 and 2000. None of the Z3's three recall campaigns covers the structure.

Every Z3 is now between 24 and 30 model years old. If yours hasn't run in a while, or the work it needs isn't worth it to you, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
The Z3 in brief
Wikipedia says the Z3 was built from September 1995 until June 28, 2002, at BMW's plant in Greer, South Carolina, then replaced by the E85 Z4. It was designed by Joji Nagashima, followed the Z1, and is related to the E36 3 Series. EPA lists four versions: Z3 Roadster, Z3 Coupe, M Roadster and M Coupe.
Engines ran from 1.8- and 1.9-liter fours (M43/M44) through 2.0- to 3.0-liter sixes (M52, M52TU, M54) to the 3.2-liter S50, S52 and S54 sixes. Transmissions were a 5-speed manual, a 4-speed GM automatic, or a 5-speed GM or ZF automatic. When the sixes moved from the M52 to the M54, the 2.0 became the 2.2i and the 2.8 became the 3.0i. In the US, the 2.3 became the 2.5.
Complaints by year group
The Z3 had a single generation, so these sections split it where the complaint mix changes.
1996-1997: air bags, seats and belts
The 1996 has 30 complaints, led by air bags (8), seats (5) and seat belts (4). The 1997 has 47: air bags 14, seats 11, seat belts 7, with 6 people listed as injured.
Recall 97V131 covers 1996-1997 Z3s. The cruise control and throttle cables share one lever at the throttle housing, and the plastic bushing on either cable could break. Dealers fit a spring steel clip on each cable. The 410,000 count is for the full campaign, and other BMW models could be part of it.
1998-2000: the structure years
This is where the file piles up. The 1998 has 68 complaints with structure first (23), then seats (10) and air bags (8). The 1999 has 69: structure 25, air bags 13, power train 10. The 2000 has 79, the most of any year: structure 29, air bags 22, power train 6. It also reports 7 crashes, 11 injured and one death.
The 1998 and 2000 have no recall campaigns at all. The 1999 has two small ones:
- 98V275: the nut holding the main positive cable to the battery terminal clamp wasn't tightened properly and could loosen over time. 1,000 vehicles.
- 99V272: rear differential ring gear bolts may have been torqued incorrectly. Dealers inspect the differential and replace it if needed. 36 vehicles.
2001-2002: fewer complaints
The 2001 has 34 complaints, led by engine and engine cooling (7) and power train (5). The 2002 has 15, with no component named more than twice. The file also holds 2 complaints under the 2003 model year, after production ended.

Restore it or sell it?
A Z3 that needs a top, an engine or body work is a project, and projects stall. Get the work priced on paper and set it beside the going rate for a sorted Z3 of the same version. An M Roadster and a 1.9 are very different cars on that second number.
- Search recalls by VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls, especially on a 1996-1997 or 1999.
- Half-finished restoration? Old project car covers selling one as it stands.
- Parked for years? Sitting for years explains what to expect when a car hasn't moved.
- Quote bigger than the car? See repairs cost more than it is worth.
Selling the Z3 whole
- Find the VIN and the miles shown, and know what the problem is.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us how it sits: in a garage under a cover, flat tires, top torn, behind other cars. That decides how the truck gets it out. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it complete, hardtop and wheels included if you have them. If parts are already gone, say so.
- Before the Z3 goes on the truck, keep its title and your photo ID close by. Title missing after all these years? Selling with no title explains the options. After you sell covers plates.
Questions people ask
- Which Z3 model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2000 leads with 79 in the October 10, 2026 count, ahead of the 1999 (69) and the 1998 (68). Those three years also hold 77 of the 79 complaints that name the structure.
- Is there a recall for the Z3 structure complaints?
- No. The Z3's three recall campaigns cover the cruise control and throttle cables (1996-1997), a loose battery cable nut (1999, 1,000 vehicles) and rear differential ring gear bolts (1999, 36 vehicles).
- My Z3 has sat in a garage for years with flat tires. Will you take it?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us it won't roll and how the garage is laid out so the right truck comes.
