These cars are now 20 to more than 40 years old, and many sit with an overheated engine, soft brakes or a dash that won't light up. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
DeVille complaints and recalls by year
Figures are owner reports logged by NHTSA up to October 10, 2026; the final DeVilles got the shortest window for filing. Each recall cell shows how many campaigns name that year. Lots of DeVille recalls cover two or three years at once, so the cells add up past 21.

What went wrong, era by era
Wikipedia splits the DeVille into eight generations. The 1984 in our data is the last year of the fifth, which used rear-wheel drive. From 1985 the car switched to a transverse engine and front-wheel drive. Recall vehicle counts here cover the whole campaign, and most campaigns also covered other GM cars.
1985-1993: speed control, brakes and fuel
Wikipedia says the sixth generation was built at Orion Assembly in Lake Orion, Michigan, with the HT-4100, HT-4500 and HT-4900 V8s and a 4-speed TH-440-T4 automatic. These nine model years hold 547 complaints. Speed control leads on the 1989 and 1990, hydraulic brakes on the 1991 and 1993, and the fuel system on the 1992.
Recall 86V056 swapped push-pull headlight switches on 1986 cars whose contacts could cut the lights without warning. Recall 87V093 dealt with ABS pressure switches on 1986-1987 cars that could seep brake fluid and take out the hydraulic pump motor. Recall 94V199 covered 1991-1993 cars whose upper transaxle oil cooler hose could pull out of its fitting; that campaign counts 403,273 vehicles.
1994-1999: the peak years
The seventh-generation years hold 1,167 complaints, more than any other stretch. The 1997 tops the whole file, and hydraulic brakes lead it with 51. Recall 97V064 replaced brake control modules on 1997 cars that could make the ABS cycle during a normal stop.
Fuel system complaints run high from 1995 to 1997 (29, 32 and 32). NHTSA lists recall 04V110 for those years: nylon fuel rail tubing that can degrade and crack. That campaign names 4.0-liter V8 engines and counts 483,477 vehicles across several models. The 1996's leading complaint is steering, with 36.
Air bags lead the 1999 with 47 complaints. Recall 98V115 sealed air bag modules on 1995 cars against water that could set them off, and 00V217 replaced side impact sensors on 1998-1999 cars that could fire the side air bags without a crash.
2000-2005: electrical, every year
The eighth generation has 983 complaints, and electrical complaints lead all six years. Steering climbs on the 2004 (30) and 2005 (24).
Recall 14V355 added key-ring inserts to 2000-2005 ignition keys; its 3,141,731 vehicles span many GM models. Recall 03V238 replaced fuel tank pressure sensors on 2002-2003 DeVilles and Sevilles with the 4.6-liter V8. Recall 02V222 inspected driver air bag inflators on 2002-2003 cars that could crack at a weld, and 02V227 added retainer kits to 2000-2002 seat belt retractors.
Worth fixing at this age?
Start with what the car would bring running, then hold the repair quote against it. On a DeVille this old, a big engine job often costs more than the car.
- Running hot or losing coolant? Engine and engine cooling is the DeVille's top complaint. See head gasket or overheating.
- Brake trouble on a 1986-1987 or 1997? Enter the VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup for 87V093 or 97V064. The bad brakes guide covers the rest.
- Dead gauges or lights on a 2000-2005? Read electrical problems before you replace modules one by one.
- A 1980s car someone may want to restore? That can be a different sale; see old project car.
Selling the DeVille whole
- Find the title and the VIN. The VIN is on the dash at the base of the windshield.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the parking spot, whether that's a carport, a side yard or a back lot, and note any flat tires or locked-up brakes. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it whole, converter and wheels included. Tell us if anything has been pulled.
- When the truck arrives, keep your title and ID on hand. After you sell covers plates and insurance by state.
