Selling a dead or junk car in Loma Linda
A Loma Linda car worth $500 or less that officials judge abandoned can be hauled away 72 hours after a notice goes on it. That rule is state law. Loma Linda's own code did not turn up in our search, so the city may add rules we could not see. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, so the car can be gone before any notice appears.

Loma Linda covers under nine square miles of San Bernardino County. State Vehicle Code 22660 lets a city like Loma Linda write its own removal ordinance and recover what removal costs. Whether one exists here is a question for the city. Below is the floor state law sets.
Abandonment. Loma Linda enforces Vehicle Code 22523. Dumping a car on a street is banned, and so is leaving one on someone's land without consent. Fines begin at $100, and the owner has to prove the removal costs were paid.
Streets. Loma Linda may tow a car under Vehicle Code 22651 once it has sat 72 straight hours or more against a local ordinance.
Stripped cars. If an officer or designated employee thinks a car was abandoned, Vehicle Code 22669 allows them to remove it from public or private land. Loma Linda can tow right away a car on public right-of-way that has no windshield, doors, tires, wheels, transmission or engine.
Cheap cars. Here is how Vehicle Code 22851.3 handles abandoned Loma Linda cars worth $500 or less:
- Loma Linda posts notice on the car 72 hours before towing; exempt are cars removed under 22669(d) that are worth $300 or less
- the owner hears about the tow within 48 hours
- disposal may come 15 days from the notice
- hearing requests must arrive inside 10 days

The DMV's order is apply first, dismantle second. Reverse it and an investigative service fee follows. Individuals junk cars without any dismantler license. After a Loma Linda car is reported as Junk, you return the plates to the DMV. Transfers for wrecking or dismantling skip Smog Check. Ownership papers missing on a car valued below $5,000? No bond is needed. In its place, a Loma Linda owner turns in ownership documents with a REG 256 Statement of Facts naming who sold the car, giving its value and stating no lien remains.
Or sell it whole, with a California title
That route is shorter. In Loma Linda, the seller puts a signature on the "California Certificate of Title", and so does any lender holding a lien. The DMV seller steps say nothing about a notary. Loma Linda sellers owe REG 138 within 5 days, mailed or filed through dmv.ca.gov/nrl. After that, later tickets follow the buyer. Ordinary plates generally remain on the car. A lost title gets replaced through REG 227 at $28, usually mailed back in 15-30 days.
