Selling a junk or dead car in Redlands
Redlands is strict about what happens after a car is hauled away as a nuisance: it stays dead. Section 8.56.100 says no abated vehicle "shall thereafter be reconstructed or made operable unless it is a vehicle which qualifies for either horseless carriage license plates or historical vehicle license plates." A project the city tows will never be a project again.

72 hours, half-built cars included
Section 8.56.070 is wider than wrecks. It reaches "fully or partially disassembled" vehicles, "including vehicles without hoods, fenders, engines, body panels, headlights, trunk lids, wheels, windows or windshields," kept more than 72 hours on residential, commercial or industrial sites, with exceptions for impound yards holding a license and some garages. Section 8.04.200 adds that wrecked or inoperative cars are a nuisance unless they sit inside a building, out of view.
Ten days of notice, twelve until disposal
The city mails the landowner "a ten (10) day notice of intent to abate and remove." Then, "if the vehicle, or parts thereof, are not claimed and removed within twelve (12) days after the notice is mailed," the city or its contractor may authorize disposal. Signed releases from both owners waive the notice. It is also skipped for a car "inoperable due to the absence of a motor, transmission or wheel and incapable of being towed," worth under $200 and posing an immediate threat, if the landowner signed a release. Read that $200 as a legal line, nothing more.
DMV hears from the city inside five days after a removal.
Cheap abandoned cars and storage hearings
In Redlands, Section 8.56.180 handles abandoned cars thought to be worth $300 or less: a distinctive notice is posted on the car at least 72 hours ahead of removal. Within 48 hours after, weekends and holidays aside, the registered and legal owners are mailed a notice. They have 10 days to ask for a poststorage hearing; at 15 days unclaimed, disposal may be authorized.
Under Section 8.56.090, members of the public, though not self-storage businesses, can put a written request to the city to take away such a car, paying a fee that covers the city's costs.
Title, brands and a lost pink slip
In Redlands, title work goes through the state DMV. You sign as seller, and DMV's seller instructions leave out any notary. Lost the title? File REG 227 first; the replacement costs $28 and generally shows up by mail 15 to 30 days later. Only one notary signature appears in that process: section 5 of REG 227, and only where a lienholder is on record. Selling with no title explains more.
California prints Salvaged for accident, flood or vandalism damage alike; flood gets no brand of its own. Salvage title has the rest. Cars sold to be dismantled skip smog, and your REG 138 release is due within 5 days.
