Selling a broken or junk Chevy Avalanche
An Avalanche with rotted brake lines, a dead gauge cluster or a split dashboard is still a whole truck, and you can sell it that way. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

GM built every Avalanche at its Silao plant in Mexico, for the 2002 through 2013 model years. The midgate behind the back seat folds down with the seats to stretch the bed into the cab. Below is what NHTSA's files show for each generation, which GM programs have already lapsed, and how a whole-truck sale works.
Two generations from Silao
| Generation | Model years | Engines and transmissions | Complaints / recalls |
|---|---|---|---|
| GMT800 | 2002-2006 | 5.3 V8 (285 hp) in the 1500, flex-fuel L59 version in 2005-2006; 8.1 V8 (340 hp) in the 2500; 4L60-E or 4L85-E four-speed automatic | 1,631 / 9 |
| GMT900 | 2007-2013 | 5.3 V8s, flex-fuel, or a 6.0 V8 through 2009; 4L60-E, then the 6L80 six-speed from 2009 | 1,319 / 13 |
These figures come from NHTSA complaint and recall data downloaded October 10, 2026. Two complaints filed under a 2001 model year, before the first Avalanche, are in the 2,952 total but in neither row. No recall crosses from one generation to the other.
2002-2006: brakes first, then wiring
The 2002 has more complaints than any other Avalanche year, 658. Its two biggest categories are both brakes: 140 complaints under hydraulic service brakes and 106 under service brakes. Owners wrote about steel lines rusting through. One lost braking at 50 mph. Another found corrosion along the hard line from the master cylinder back to the rear distribution module.
We found no recall or GM program for those lines. The 2002's corrosion recall, 05V379, dealt with ABS wheel speed sensors instead: rust under a sensor could trigger the ABS at low speed and stretch the stop. GM launched it in salt-belt states and had dealers clean and treat the sensor mounts. It covered 1,353,718 GM pickups and SUVs.
Two more brake campaigns hit the Hydro-Boost booster. Recall 04V045 replaced a relief valve whose seal could fracture and make steering heavy while braking, on 68,875 SUVs, pickups and vans. Recall 05V043 had dealers test Bosch booster accumulators that could crack and replace the ones that failed, on 77,411 trucks, SUVs and vans.
On the 2003 through 2005, electrical complaints take over: 118, 105 and 68. A 2003 owner reported every gauge and the speedometer going dead at once. GM's Special Coverage 10240, issued May 2011, covered 2003-2006 trucks whose climate controls were the manual kind, plus those with the heavy-duty heater, where the blower could quit on some speeds and might smell of burning or smoke. Dealers fitted a new blower motor resistor and connector, with the coverage good for a decade or 150,000 miles past each truck's in-service date.
Fuel was the other risk. Recall 03V019 added a tank shield on 2003 trucks, because in a 30-degree left frontal crash a frame crossmember could tear and puncture the tank; it covered 5,734 pickups and SUVs. On trucks with the 8.1 V8, recall 06V289 replaced a fuel rail damper clip that could crack and leak fuel, across 38,439 trucks.
2007-2013: air bags, cracked dashes and washer fires
Air bags lead the complaint list on every model year from 2007 through 2011: 267 of 493 on the 2007 and 145 of 295 on the 2008. One 2007 owner described the dash cracking around the passenger air bag, a crack that kept spreading after 2009.
Then came Takata. On November 27, 2020, NHTSA turned down GM's request to be excused from recalling roughly 5.9 million GMT900 trucks and SUVs built for 2007-2014. GM filed five campaigns on February 5, 2021 that swap the front passenger inflator at no cost, because the original can explode and throw metal fragments. The 2007-2013 Avalanche is split among them by model year and by registration state. The first campaign, 21V050, covered 2,641,272 vehicles on its own, Silverados, Suburbans, Tahoes and Escalades among them.
The heated washer was a fire risk too. Recall 08V441, in August 2008, added an in-line fuse because the washer fluid heater's circuit board could short and cause odor, smoke or fire. It covered 857,735 vehicles from several GM brands. In June 2010 a second campaign, 10V240, went further: dealers switched the module off for good and took it out, on 1,365,070 vehicles.
Later trucks drew three more defects:
- 2011: rear axle cross pins that were not properly heat-treated could break and lock the rear axle (10V643, 1,262 trucks, then 30,566 more GM vehicles under 11V007).
- 2011-2012: the ignition lock actuator could stick in Start and snap back to Accessory, cutting engine power, power steering and power brakes (14V827, 84,192 vehicles).
- 2013: a steering column defect on trucks built November 7 to December 18, 2012 let them shift out of Park without the brake pressed, even with the key out (13V001, 54,686 vehicles).
Special Coverage 11273B, from December 2013, covered throttle position sensors on 2008-2011 V8 trucks that caused rough running, a lit check engine light and reduced power. Its window was a decade or 120,000 miles from each truck's in-service date.
A March 2025 GM service bulletin, 19-NA-255, puts 2011-2013 Avalanches on its list of trucks where the frame's wax coating flakes off and rust shows through. It blames the frame supplier, which may have skipped preparing the steel before the wax went on. The bulletin is a repair procedure only: its warranty line points to bumper-to-bumper coverage, with no extension. Production ended after the 2013 model year, when every truck was sold as the Black Diamond Edition.

We left NHTSA's catch-all "unknown or other" category out of the component column; it tops the 2012 and 2013 lists. Each recall is tallied under every model year it names, which is how a single campaign turns up in more than one row. The two 2001 complaints are not shown.
Fix it, or sell it?
Three questions settle it for most Avalanches.
- Is a recall still open? The Takata fix is a free replacement inflator. Type the VIN into NHTSA's lookup and let a Chevrolet dealer take care of anything listed.
- How much of the underside is rusted? Get the truck on a lift and look at the frame, the brake lines and the fuel lines together before you approve one repair.
- What would it bring running? Hold the quote against that number. Our page on junk car value explains what moves the price on a truck that won't run, and non-running cars covers the options for one that won't start.
Handing over the truck
Gather the VIN, the odometer reading and an honest rundown of the faults. Then ask for an offer online or phone (877) 421-6008.
Tell us where the truck is parked, such as a driveway, a gravel lot or a shop's back row, and whether its wheels turn and its steering moves. That's what decides how it gets loaded.
Leave the truck whole: the tailgate, the midgate and its glass, any bed covers and the catalytic converter. If a part is already off or broken, say so up front.
The driver will need the title and your ID, plus keys if any survive. Plate handling varies, and after you sell gives the rule for each state.
Other GM trucks we cover: the Silverado 1500, Suburban and Tahoe, and the rest of Chevrolet.
Questions people ask
- Is my Avalanche part of the Takata air bag recall?
- If it's a 2007-2013, check the VIN. GM filed five campaigns on February 5, 2021, numbered 21V050 through 21V054, that replace the front passenger air bag inflator free of charge. They split the trucks by model year and by the state where each one is registered. NHTSA had turned down GM's request to skip the recall on November 27, 2020.
- Did GM ever fix the rusted brake lines on 2002 Avalanches?
- We found no recall or GM program for steel brake line corrosion. Owners of 2002 trucks told NHTSA about lines rusting through and the brakes going, one of them at 50 mph. The 2002 corrosion recall that does exist, 05V379, cleaned and treated rusty ABS wheel speed sensor mounts. It did not replace lines.
- Can I still use Special Coverage 10240 or 11273B?
- Almost certainly not. Coverage 10240 (blower motor resistor, 2003-2006 trucks) had a limit of 10 years or 150,000 miles, and 11273B (throttle position sensor, 2008-2011 V8 trucks) a limit of 10 years or 120,000. Both clocks started when the truck first went into service, so on these model years they have run out.
- Will you buy an Avalanche with a cracked dash and no gauges?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and a truck with a split dashboard, a dead cluster or bad brakes is still a whole truck. You sell the whole car as it sits, and the pickup is free anywhere in the US.
