Selling a Chevrolet Suburban that no longer runs
A Suburban that won't start, won't stop straight or needs a new engine can still be sold in one piece. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Nothing has to come off it first.

Two checks come first. On a 2021-2024 with the 6.2-liter V8, an open engine recall may mean a free inspection or a new engine. On a 2015-2018, GM's brake-assist coverage may still apply. Both are covered below.
Forty-three model years, six generations
NHTSA's complaint file for the Suburban starts with the 1984 model year. Our pull of its flat files on October 10, 2026 counts 9,756 complaints and 85 recall campaigns through the 2026 model year.
| Years | Platform and power | Where complaints cluster | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1984-1991 | Rounded-Line R/V, built in Flint. 4.1 six, 305, 350 and 454 V8s, 6.2 diesel. Fuel injection from 1987. | Seats and tires, in small numbers | 238 | 5 |
| 1992-1999 | GMT400. 5.7 V8, 7.4 V8 on 2500s, 6.5 turbodiesel from 1994, Vortec engines from 1996. | Hydraulic brakes and ABS, by far | 3,766 | 13 |
| 2000-2006 | GMT800. Vortec 5.3, 6.0 and 8.1 V8s, four-speed automatics. Janesville, Arlington and Silao. | Brakes through 2002, then the electrical system | 2,549 | 20 |
| 2007-2014 | GMT900. 5.3 and 6.0 V8s. 4L60E on early 1500s, six-speed automatics on every truck by 2010. | Air bags | 1,653 | 15 |
| 2015-2020 | K2XX, Arlington only. 5.3 V8 and six-speed; 6.2 and 10-speed in the 2019-on RST. | Service brakes, then power train | 993 | 16 |
| 2021-2026 | T1XX. 5.3 and 6.2 V8s, first Suburban with the 3.0 Duramax, 10-speed. | Engine | 557 | 19 |
A recall that reaches across a generation change sits in both rows, so that column adds up to more than 85.
1992-1999: the brake years
These eight years hold 3,766 complaints; 1,725 name the hydraulic brakes. The 1994 has 872 complaints, more than any other Suburban, with 558 of them about brakes. One 1994 K2500 owner described the ABS kicking in at low speed for no reason and the truck taking noticeably longer to stop. The file holds no single recall that ties that pile of reports together.
GM did recall the 1994 for its brake lights. Under 99V025, the zero-adjust brake switch had been wired with its polarity reversed, so the contacts could wear out early and the lamps quit. That campaign covered 988,587 GM pickups, crew cabs and SUVs, not only Suburbans.
Rust is the later chapter. The 1999 drew 720 complaints, 252 of them on hydraulic brakes. One owner's pedal went to the floor with the warning light on, and the mechanic found corroded lines, one of them burst.
2000-2006: brake pipes, ABS sensors, then wiring
Brakes stayed on top of the complaint list through 2002, and two recalls match the reports. Recall 00V345 found the front right brake pipe on 2000 models could rub the body cross sill, which leaves a low pedal and longer stops; 1,383,922 GM trucks and SUVs were in it. Recall 05V379 dealt with rusty wheel speed sensors setting off the ABS at low speed on 2000-2002 trucks, starting in the salt-belt states; that one covered 1,353,718 vehicles.
From the 2003 model year the electrical system leads instead, with 131 complaints on the 2003 and 152 on the 2004. One GM program fits these years: special coverage 10240 says the blower resistor module or its wiring connector on 2003-2006 Suburbans with manual climate control can overheat, sometimes with a burning smell or smoke, leaving the fan dead on some settings or on all of them. Its window was a decade or 150,000 miles, which every 2003-2006 has now outlived.
2007-2014: Takata and the washer heater
Air bags top the complaint list in most of these years: 203 complaints on the 2007 and 137 on the 2008. Takata is the reason to check the VIN. In November 2020 NHTSA turned down GM's petition to be excused from a recall; the Federal Register notice says it "involves approximately 5.9 million MY 2007-2014 GMT900 vehicles." GM then filed campaigns 21V-050 through 21V-054. Dealers fit a different front passenger inflator for free. GM's recall report for 21V-050 warns of "sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants." One 2007 owner reported a dealer saying the repair could crack the dash, and that the recall would not pay for that damage.
The 2007-2009 trucks also had a heated washer fluid module that could short out and catch fire. GM first added a fused harness under 08V441, then had dealers remove the module for good under 10V240, a campaign of 1,365,070 GM vehicles across several brands.
For 2011 and later, GM bulletin 19-NA-255 addresses frame wax peeling off and leaving rust showing. It is a repair bulletin, not an extended warranty.
2015-2020: brake assist and a do-not-drive notice
The 2015 has 429 complaints, 142 of them on service brakes, and 11 recall campaigns, the most of any Suburban year except the 2021.
Under recall 19V645, dealers loaded new software into the electronic brake control module of 2015-2018 Suburbans, because the vacuum pump's output can fall off over time; the campaign counted 3,456,719 GM trucks and SUVs. GM's bulletin describes "increased brake pedal effort, hard brake pedal" and longer stops. Special coverage N182202780 pays for that repair "for a period of 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership."
Three more recalls matter. On the 2015, 18V586 updated steering software after assist cut out and came back suddenly. On 2015-2020 4WD trucks with the 5.3 and a 3.08 axle, 19V761 fixed a failed wheel speed sensor braking one wheel on its own. And 16V256 told owners of 3,738 vehicles, 2016 Suburbans among them, to stop driving until both front upper control arms were replaced over weak welds.
2021 on: the 6.2-liter recall
The engine leads the complaint list on the 2021 (80), 2022 (56) and 2023 (72). The recall to know is 25V-274. It covers 6.2-liter L87 V8s built from March 1, 2021 to May 31, 2024. GM's report blames manufacturing defects in the connecting rods or crankshaft that can end in engine failure. Dealers check each engine, then fix or swap it as needed, and trucks that pass get thicker oil. GM counted 597,630 vehicles across Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac.
Diesel 2021 trucks have recall 24V797, for a transmission valve that can lock the rear wheels. And 66 vehicles, 2026 Suburbans among them, are under a do-not-drive notice (26V289) for a missing transfer case part.
NHTSA complaints and recalls by model year
Flat-file counts as of October 10, 2026. A recall counts once in each year it covers, and once per row where years are grouped. "Area named most" is NHTSA's own component label.

Repair it, claim it, or sell it?
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Takata inflators on 2007-2014 trucks and the 6.2 engine on 2021-2024 trucks are the two big ones.
- Stiff pedal on a 2015-2018 truck? Have a Chevrolet dealer see whether N182202780 still applies before paying for anything.
- Rotted brake lines or frame on a 1990s or 2000s truck? Have the shop put a price on the job, then look up the going rate for a running Suburban of that year. Our failed inspection guide covers that call.
- Engine gone and no recall applies? The blown engine guide walks through rebuild, swap or sell. What a junk car is worth explains what moves an offer.
How to sell a Suburban whole
- Gather the basics: VIN, mileage, which engine it has, the fault, and whether it can roll and be steered.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it's parked. A Suburban is long, so mention a tight driveway, a low garage or a shop lot, and whether all four wheels turn.
- Leave it complete. Seats, wheels and catalytic converters stay on. Mention anything already pulled.
- On the day, the driver needs the signed title, your photo ID and whatever keys you have. Each state handles plates its own way; after you sell lists them.
Lost the title? Start with selling a junk car without a title, or compare the Tahoe.
Questions people ask
- Which Suburban model years drew the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1994 leads with 872, followed by the 1999 (720), the 2001 (566), the 1993 (499) and the 2003 (497). Hydraulic brakes are the area named most on four of those five; on the 2003 it is the electrical system. Newer trucks show lower counts, and part of that is simply age.
- My 2021-2024 Suburban's 6.2 V8 seized. Is that covered?
- Run the VIN first. Recall 25V-274 covers 6.2-liter L87 engines built between March 1, 2021 and May 31, 2024. The remedy is an inspection, then a repair or a replacement engine where one is called for, at no charge. Ask a Chevrolet dealer how they handle an engine that has already failed before you sell the truck as it is.
- Is the brake-assist extended coverage still good on my Suburban?
- It may be. The clock on GM's special coverage N182202780 starts on the truck's first in-service day and stops at ten years or 150,000 miles, and it passes to each new owner. A Chevrolet dealer can run the VIN and tell you.
- Can you pick up a Suburban that is too long for my driveway and won't roll?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes big SUVs that sit on the street, on a lawn or in a shop lot. Say it won't roll, and whether the wheels still turn; that tells the driver what equipment to bring. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Should I take the third-row seats or the wheels off before selling?
- No. You sell the whole car as it sits. Leave seats, wheels, the battery and both catalytic converters in place. List any part that's already been removed in your offer request.
