Selling a broken-down Chevy Tahoe
A Tahoe with a dead engine, a slipping transmission or brakes nobody trusts still sells as one piece. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, a full-size SUV included. Free pickup anywhere in the US means you don't need to tow it, drain it or pull anything off it first.

Five generations, each built in Arlington
Chevrolet gave its full-size Blazer the Tahoe name for 1995. GM's Arlington, Texas, plant has built it in every generation and still does; Janesville, Wisconsin, helped through 2009.

Known problems, era by era
1999-2002: brakes
The 1999 drew 552 complaints, and 223 are filed under hydraulic brakes. NHTSA's online search returns 562 complaints for that year, and 152 of them mention locking, seizing or the ABS.
GM's recall started with the 2000. Recall 05V379 (August 2005) covers unwanted ABS activation in low-speed stops on 2000-2002 GM pickups and SUVs, which can lengthen the stop. The notice says it is "more likely to occur in environmentally corrosive areas." Dealers clean the wheel speed sensor mounts and coat them with rust inhibitor. The campaign counts 1,353,718 trucks and SUVs, not Tahoes alone.
On the 2001, a different brake stands out: 73 complaints are filed under the parking brake, and owners say it won't hold the SUV. No recall covers it.
2003-2006: gauges and the heater blower
Electrical complaints top the 2003 (186) and 2004 (200). Of 464 complaints on the 2004 in the online search, 183 mention the speedometer, the gauges or the whole instrument cluster. We found no recall or GM coverage for that.
GM did cover one heater fault: on 2003-2006 Tahoes with manual climate control or the heavy-duty heater, the blower resistor module could overheat and kill the fan, sometimes with smoke. That program, 10240, closed years ago.
2007-2014: dashboards, washer fires, Takata
No Tahoe year has more complaints than the 2007: 1,177. Air bags lead with 487 and structure follows with 207. In NHTSA's online search, 158 of the 272 structure complaints on the 2007 mention the dash; one owner describes cracks running its full length. No recall covers that.
Air bags are the top complaint category on every Tahoe from 2007 through 2011, the years of GM's Takata recalls for the front passenger inflator on GMT900 trucks and SUVs. Those followed NHTSA's November 27, 2020 refusal of a GM petition covering about 5.9 million 2007-2014 vehicles; dealers fit a different inflator free. We didn't sort the complaints by cause.
The heated washer fluid system brought two recalls. In 2008, 08V441 added a fused harness because a short on the module's circuit board can make smoke and raise fire risk; it lists 857,735 vehicles across several GM brands. In 2010, 10V240 had dealers disable and remove the module on 2007-2009 Tahoes and other models, 1,365,070 vehicles in all.
2015-2020: brake assist and three do-not-drive recalls
The 2015 has 662 complaints, and service brakes lead with 179. Of 653 complaints on the 2015 in the online search, 142 mention the pedal, the vacuum pump or lost assist. Recall 19V645 traces it to a vacuum pump that makes less vacuum as it ages; dealers reprogram the brake control module. It lists 3,456,719 trucks and SUVs from Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac. GM's Special Coverage N182202780 also covers this condition on 2015-2018 Tahoes for "10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first," counted from the day the SUV was first put in service, "regardless of ownership."
NHTSA flags three recalls here as do-not-drive: 14V246 (inner tie rods on 2015 Tahoes built January 29 to March 27, 2014; 477 vehicles, Silverados and Sierras included), 16V256 (weak welds on 2016 front upper control arms; 3,738 vehicles across GM brands) and 26V289 (filed in May 2026: some transfer cases were built without one component, so the front or rear wheels may lock up; it lists 66 vehicles across GM brands, among them some 2026 4WD and AWD models and some 2015-2020 Tahoes).
GM bulletin 15-06-01-002N partly blames a collapsed or stuck Active Fuel Management lifter for P0300 misfires and ticking on 2015-2020 Tahoes with the 5.3 or 6.2.
2021-2026: lifters, engines and the 6.2 recall
The 2021 has 455 complaints, 136 of them about the engine. GM's preliminary repair note PIP5776F is about 2021 Tahoes built September 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021 with the 5.3 or 6.2 that set misfire codes: a bent push rod leads to a collapsed lifter. Under 8,000 miles it calls for new lifters and guides on both banks; past that, only on the bank with the fault.
Recall 25V-274 is the big one. It covers 2021-2024 Tahoes, Suburbans and Silverado 1500s, plus their GMC and Cadillac cousins, with the 6.2-liter L87 built March 1, 2021 to May 31, 2024. Defects in the connecting rods or crankshaft can wreck the engine. Dealers inspect and, if needed, repair or replace it. GM's report counts 597,630 vehicles across the three brands. Before it, three GM programs swapped engines on some 2022-2024 Tahoes for under-torqued main bearing cap bolts, oversized lifter bores or a contaminated block; the 2022 and 2024 programs have ended.
Two recalls target transmission valves that can lock the rear wheels: 24V797 on 2021 diesels (463,295 GM vehicles in all) and 26V085 on some 2022 Tahoes and other GM SUVs with the 10-speed (43,743).
Complaints and recalls by model year
Each Tahoe number in this table traces to NHTSA's bulk data, October 10, 2026 edition; every Tahoe complaint is an owner's report filed under one model year. A recall that spans several rows counts in each one, so the recall column doesn't add up to 83.
| Model years | Complaints | Recall campaigns | Component named most |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1994 | 19 | 2 | Hydraulic brakes (10) |
| 1995-1996 | 529 | 6 | Seats on the 1995 (74), brakes on the 1996 (69) |
| 1997-1998 | 673 | 2 | Steering on the 1997 (101) |
| 1999 | 552 | 1 | Hydraulic brakes (223) |
| 2000-2002 | 1,243 | 7 | Brakes on all three; parking brake on the 2001 (73) |
| 2003-2004 | 974 | 4 | Electrical system (186 and 200) |
| 2005-2006 | 407 | 7 | Electrical system on the 2005 (112) |

| 2024-2026 | 143 | 6 | Engine (20, 23 and 17) |
A repair bill or a sale?
Start with what GM might still pay for.
- Engine gone on a 2021-2024 6.2? Run the VIN for 25V-274. A dealer replacing the engine for free beats any sale.
- Hard brake pedal on a 2015-2018? Ask about recall 19V645 and coverage N182202780.
- Rust on the frame? GM bulletin 19-NA-255 (March 2025) lists the Tahoe for frame wax that flakes off over corrosion and suspects poor metal prep at the supplier. Its warranty line names only bumper-to-bumper coverage and states no longer term.
- None of that applies? Have a shop price the job on paper, then look up what a running Tahoe like yours brings. A repair that eats most of that number is a good reason to sell it broken instead. See blown engine and what a junk car is worth.
How to sell your Tahoe whole
- Jot down the 17-digit VIN, the odometer reading and the symptoms, plus whether the Tahoe rolls in neutral.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where the Tahoe sits, and flag a seized transfer case or flat tires, since those decide which truck comes.
- Leave everything on it, including the wheels, the battery and the third row.
- When the truck arrives, sign over the Tahoe's title, show your ID and pass along any keys you have. Plate rules differ by state; after you sell lists them.

Questions people ask
- Which Tahoe model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2007 leads with 1,177, counted October 10, 2026. Next come the 2015 (662), 2008 (586), 1999 (552) and 2001 (512). The 2007's count is driven by air bag and dashboard reports, the 1999's by brakes, and the 2015's by a hardening brake pedal.
- The 6.2-liter engine in my 2022 Tahoe failed. Will GM pay for it?
- Check recall 25V-274 by VIN before you do anything else. It covers 2021-2024 Tahoes with the 6.2-liter L87 built March 1, 2021 to May 31, 2024, for connecting rod and crankshaft defects, and dealers inspect, repair or replace the engine for free. If the dealer says the VIN isn't included, you can still sell the Tahoe with the dead engine in it.
- Is the brake assist coverage on 2015-2018 Tahoes still good?
- It might be. GM's program N182202780 lasts a decade or 150,000 miles from the date the Tahoe first went into service, ending at whichever limit it hits sooner, and a change of owner doesn't cancel it. A Tahoe first sold in late 2016 or later can still be inside the time limit. A Chevrolet dealer can tell you from the VIN.
- My Tahoe is on a do-not-drive recall. Can you still pick it up?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, so a Tahoe that shouldn't be driven is fine. The truck loads it where it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us about the recall when you ask for an offer.
- Should I pull the third-row seats or the wheels before selling?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. Seats, wheels, battery and exhaust parts should all stay bolted on. Anything that's gone already belongs in your description, because a Tahoe with parts removed gets a different offer.
