Brakes are the story in NHTSA's file for these vans: hydraulic brakes are named in 139 of 450 complaints, far more than anything else. The recalls cluster on front control arms, the brake pedal linkage and one batch of 1995 transmission cases.

Which van this is

The third-generation G-series van ran from the 1971 to the 1996 model year. Chevrolet called the cargo version the Chevy Van and the passenger version the Sportvan, each in 10, 20 and 30 series. This page covers the 1984-1995 vans; the 1996, renamed G-Classic and sold only above 8,500 pounds GVWR, shows up in the table because NHTSA files it under the same names. The Express replaced it.

Highlights from those years:

  • 1985: the 4.3-liter V6 replaced the 4.1-liter six as the base engine, and a grille borrowed from the C/K pickups came with bigger taillamps.
  • 1987: throttle-body fuel injection reached the V6 and the 5.0 and 5.7 V8s.
  • 1988: a fuel-injected 7.4-liter V8 became an option on 3500-series vans.
  • 1990: manual transmissions were dropped, and an extended one-ton could seat 15.
  • 1992-1994: the 4L60E and 4L80E automatics took over, a brake-shift interlock arrived for 1993, and a driver air bag and the 6.5-liter diesel for 1994.

Lordstown, Ohio, built the vans through 1992, and Scarborough, Ontario, from 1974 through 1993. Flint Truck Assembly built them from 1993, and a Detroit plant built only heavy-duty G30s in those last years. The counts on this page include complaints filed as Chevy Van, Sport Van, G Van, G Series, G10, G20 and G30. Another 62 filed simply as "Van" are left out, since that label could mean a different Chevrolet van.

Brakes: what owners complain about most

Hydraulic brakes lead every year from 1992 through 1996. They are named in 43 of the 1993's 92 complaints, 26 of the 1994's 67 and 47 of the 1995's 129. A separate pull from NHTSA's complaints API for the 1995 G20 returned 83 complaints; 36 are filed under a brake component, and of those, 13 mention the ABS and 7 the pedal. One owner says the brakes failed at 40 mph. No GM service program for it turned up.

Two recalls touched the pedal linkage:

  • 92V127 (September 1992): on 246 1992 vans, the brake pedal pushrod pin was too small and installed in the wrong spot. Dealers replaced the assembly.
  • 93V152 (September 1993): the push rod retainer could be missing, out of place or not seated on 1994 models. NHTSA says the stop lamp switch and booster push rod could then come off the pedal, and the brakes would stop working. The 70,154 vehicles include the 1994 C/K pickups.

Front control arms that crack

Recall 88V110 (July 1988) found that the left lower control arm can crack until the lower ball joint separates from it, which can mean losing steering control with no warning. It covered 21,485 vehicles, 1985-1986 G30 vans and P30 chassis from Chevrolet and GMC. Recall 91V217 (December 1991) widened the same problem to 166,624 1985-1986 G30 vans and C30 trucks, Chevrolet and GMC, and added a reinforced brace. A third, 94V125 (July 1994), covered 3,492 1992-1993 G30 and GMC G35 vans whose arms could crack near the ball joint pad.

The 1995 transmission case

Recall 95V026 (February 1995) says some 1995 transmission cases were cast too thin and can leak. Oil sprayed on the exhaust could cause a fire. Dealers inspect the case and replace the transmission if it is one of the bad castings. The 13,853 count covers the whole campaign, which also took in 1995 C/K 20 and 30 pickups, Suburbans, P chassis and the GMC Rally.

The rest of the recall list

  • 91V040: the rear bench seat back on 1989-1991 vans can tear away from the cushion in a crash. Dealers reinforced it on 25,807 Chevrolet and GMC vans.
  • 94V128: a transformer powering a neon center light beam, fitted to some 1993-1994 conversion vans, can overheat and catch fire. Mark III dealers swapped in incandescent lights. The 6,088 figure includes Ford and Dodge conversions.
  • 84V133, 88V016, 90V074: a 1984 fuel cap that may not seal, small holes in a 1987 filler pipe bracket weld, and loose tie rod clamps on 242 1990 vans.

The two grouped rows hold years with fewer than 30 complaints each; each campaign is counted once in a grouped row. Two of the 1996 campaigns come from a mobility equipment company and cover seven vans with wheelchair lifts apiece. The 1993-1995 vans alone account for 288 of the 450 complaints.

Worth fixing at this age?

Set the shop's quote beside the van's value in running order. A G-series more than 30 years old with a big brake, steering or transmission job ahead often makes more sense to sell as it is.

  1. Look up recalls by VIN at NHTSA. Control arm braces, pedal retainers and the transmission case check were free recall work.
  2. Transmission leaking on a 1995? Find out whether the case was inspected under 95V026. If it wasn't covered, the bad transmission guide helps you weigh the quote.
  3. Parked for years? Rubber, fuel and brake fluid go stale on a van that sits, however few miles it adds. See selling a car that's been sitting.

Selling the van as it sits

  1. Write down the VIN, the badge on the side (G10, G20, G30 or Sportvan), the odometer reading and what has failed.
  2. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it is parked, such as a side yard, a gravel lot or a business's back lot, and whether it rolls and steers.
  4. Leave it whole. If seats, shelving or the engine have already come out, say so.
  5. Have the title and photo ID ready at pickup. Plate rules vary by state; see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Chevy Van model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1995, with 129 as of October 10, 2026. Next are the 1993 (92) and the 1994 (67). Brakes lead all three. Before 1992 no single year reaches 30 complaints.
Why do so many 1993-1995 vans have brake complaints?
The file does not say, and we found no GM service program for it. Hydraulic brakes are named in 43 complaints on the 1993, 26 on the 1994 and 47 on the 1995, and owners describe soft or failing pedals and ABS lights. Two recalls touch the pedal linkage: 92V127 on some 1992 vans and 93V152 on 1994 vans and pickups.
I have a 1985 or 1986 G30. What was the control arm recall?
The left lower front control arm can crack from the rear flange toward the ball joint hole until the ball joint separates, which NHTSA says can mean a loss of steering control without warning. Recall 88V110 repaired or replaced the arm; the wider 91V217 added a reinforcing brace. Both campaigns reached past the G30 van: the first also covered the P30 chassis, the second the C30 truck.
What does the 1995 transmission recall involve?
Recall 95V026 says some 1995 automatic transmission cases were cast too thin and can leak from outside. Oil on the exhaust could start a fire. Dealers inspect the case and replace the transmission if it has the bad casting. The campaign's 13,853 vehicles include C/K 20 and 30 pickups and Suburbans as well as vans.
Do you buy old work vans and conversion vans?
Yes, as whole vehicles. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, vans included, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention anything added or removed, such as shelving, extra seats, a bed or a wheelchair lift, and how long it has been parked.
