Selling a dead or tired Chevy Express van

Cargo, passenger or cutaway, a Chevy Express with a blown engine or a dead transmission can go as one unit. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and free pickup anywhere in the US includes a 155-inch van in a fleet yard. Nobody has to strip it first.

Most of the Express story is in its recalls rather than its complaints. Owners have filed 996 complaints with NHTSA in all, while NHTSA lists 81 recall campaigns. Run the VIN before you sell, in case something is still open.

One van since 1996

Chevrolet replaced its G-series van with the Express for 1996, though cargo versions kept the Chevrolet Van name for a few years. GM has built it at Wentzville, Missouri, the whole time, along with the GMC Savana, which is the same van. Since 2017 Navistar has built the cutaway chassis in Springfield, Ohio.

  • 1996-2002 (GMT600): 4.3 V6; 5.0, 5.7, 7.4 or 8.1 gas V8; a 6.5 diesel. The 4L60-E automatic went in lighter vans and the 4L80-E in heavy ones.
  • 2003 on (GMT610): new frame and chassis work and a new front end. Engines have included the 4.3 V6, the 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0 V8s, a 6.6 Duramax diesel from 2006 to 2016, a 2.8 Duramax four from 2017 to 2022, and a 6.6 gas V8 from 2021. All-wheel drive was offered 2003-2014 with the 5.3. Passenger vans got side curtain air bags and stability control for 2008.

The current van offers a 276-horsepower 4.3 V6 or a 401-horsepower 6.6 V8, both with an eight-speed automatic.

What the complaints and recalls point to

1996-2002

Recall 00V110 fitted a revised evaporative emission pipe to 109,239 passenger vans from 1996-1997 that smelled of fuel or leaked it. Tires are the other pattern: on the 2000, 13 of 84 complaints in NHTSA's online search are about tires, and 10 describe tread separating. One driver says the tread on the driver's-side rear tire came off at about 45 mph. No tire recall appears for the Express.

2003-2008

The 2003 has the most complaints of any year, 101, and 12 of them report a fire. The fuel filler is the main thread: 18 of 127 complaints on the 2003 in the online search mention it. On vans with a left-side cargo door, water and road grime get trapped in the pipe's conduit and corrode it, and fuel can leak while you fill up. Recall 12V388 replaced the filler neck on 9,389 2003-2004 Express and Savana vans sold or registered in northern salt states. Vans registered elsewhere were handled under Special Coverage 12167 instead, a ten-year, 150,000-mile program that has since lapsed.

Recall 05V558 covers seat belt buckles that won't latch or won't release on 425,593 full-size passenger, cargo and cutaway vans from 2003-2006. A separate GM program, 14635, fixes a belt warning chime that sounds even when buckled on 2003-2015 vans with a six-way power driver seat, for 10 years or 120,000 miles. On the 2005, some owners report paint peeling around the windows and roof gutter.

2009-2014

Recall 14V117 modified the passenger side of the dashboard on 303,013 2009-2014 Express and Savana vans rated 10,000 pounds or less. In a crash too mild to fire the passenger air bag, an unbelted passenger could hit the panel and get hurt. Compressed natural gas vans had two recalls: 14V500 for a leaking high-pressure regulator on 3,345 vans from 2011-2014, and 13V225 for an overheating connector on 1,791 vans with an IMPCO-installed system. GM also replaced both front torsion bars on some 2014 vans whose bars could crack and drop one side; that program closed August 21, 2016.

2015 to now

A 2021 van with the 6.6 gas V8 may be on recall 21V189, the only Express recall in NHTSA's file with a park-outside warning: the battery cable terminals can short against a fuse block post. Recall 24V839 updated transmission software on 77,824 Express and Savana vans from 2022-2023 that could shift hard, lose power or lock the rear wheels. The newest, 26V399, covers a steering gear nut that may not have been tightened on 26,541 vans from 2025-2026.

Rust comes up for newer vans too. In March 2025, GM bulletin 19-NA-255 put the Express on a list of trucks and vans whose frame wax flakes off with corrosion showing through. GM says the frame supplier "may not have properly prepped the metal" before the wax went on. The bulletin's warranty note points to bumper-to-bumper coverage and names no extended period.

Cutaways and conversions

Recall 23V247 seals unused rear heater and air conditioning wiring on 150,830 Express and Savana Cutaways from 2003-2023, since exposed connectors can corrode and overheat. Recall 24V702 checks brake lines that may lack clearance and leak fluid on 18,325 cutaways from 2013-2019 with GM's optional body mounts. And 19 campaigns are for wheelchair lifts and similar gear, filed by the converters, not by GM.

Complaints and recalls by model year

These Express totals reflect NHTSA's data files on October 10, 2026; any campaign that spans several rows of vans is counted in each row, which is why the recall column adds up past 81. NHTSA files one complaint under a 1995 van, a year before the Express went on sale.

Repair it or sell it?

A work van earns its keep only while it runs. When it doesn't, weigh three things.

  1. What's free. Open recalls are repaired at no cost, and a dealer can tell you if any GM coverage still applies to your VIN.
  2. The quote against the van. Get the repair priced in writing, then look at what a running Express of the same year, length and miles sells for. A big engine or transmission bill on a high-mile van often doesn't add up.
  3. The rest of the van. Rust on the frame, a worn suspension or a long list of small faults counts too. Our guide on whether to part it out or sell it whole walks through the trade-off.

If it won't start at all, read selling a non-running car first.

How to sell an Express whole

  1. Note the VIN, mileage, engine, and whether it's a cargo, passenger or cutaway van.
  2. Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where it's parked: a yard, a street, a shop. Mention if it's blocked in or the tires are flat.
  4. Leave it complete. Say if anything was removed, like the catalytic converter or the seats.
  5. Before the driver leaves, the van's title gets signed over and your ID checked. A van registered to a company needs that noted in your request. Plate rules vary; see after you sell.

No title in hand? Start with the no-title guide. For other Chevy vans, see the Chevy Van, the Astro and the City Express.

Questions people ask

Why does NHTSA list 81 recalls for the Express?
Part of it is who files them. Nineteen are for wheelchair lifts and other mobility equipment, filed by the companies that converted the vans, and none of those lists more than 185 vehicles. Most of GM's own campaigns cover the GMC Savana as well, since the two are the same van.
Was my 2003 or 2004 Express in the fuel filler recall?
If it has a left-side cargo door and was sold or registered in one of the listed northern states, recall 12V388 applies and dealers fit a new filler neck for free. Vans in other states got Special Coverage 12167 instead, which has run out. Either way, a VIN check at nhtsa.gov/recalls settles it.
Can I sell the van with shelving, a ladder rack or a partition still in it?
Yes. Sell the whole car as it sits. Tell us what's bolted in and whether anything was taken out, so the offer matches the van.
My 2021 Express has the 6.6 gas V8. What is the park-outside recall?
Recall 21V189 covers 10,154 Express and Savana vans from 2021 with the 6.6-liter gas engine. The positive battery cable terminals can touch a fuse block post and short, so GM advises parking outside and away from buildings until a dealer trims the terminal tabs.
Do you take an Express that hasn't run in years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and free pickup anywhere in the US covers a full-size van. Let us know if the tires are flat or the brakes are seized, since that changes how it gets loaded.
