Selling a worn-out Chevrolet Astro van
Every Chevrolet Astro on the road is now between 21 and 41 years old. If yours has quit running, or the latest estimate is more than the van is worth to you, sell it whole. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and vans count. Pickup is free anywhere in the US, so the Astro can leave from wherever it sits.

GM's first minivan, from one plant
The Astro arrived for 1985 as General Motors' first minivan. It borrowed its engines and transmissions from the S-10 pickup, which let it tow up to 5,500 pounds. Every Astro, and every GMC Safari twin, came from Baltimore Assembly in Maryland, and the vans were the last model that plant ever built. The final one left the line on May 13, 2005.
| Years | Drive | Engines | Transmissions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1985-1989 | Rear-wheel drive | 98 hp 2.5 four (cargo vans; passenger vans in 1985 only) or 4.3 V6 | BorgWarner T-5 manual, or automatic |
| 1990-1994 | Rear, with all-wheel drive optional from 1990 | 4.3 V6 of 165 to 200 hp; the four was gone after 1990 | Automatic only; the 4L60E from 1993 |
| 1995-2005 | Rear or all-wheel drive | 190 hp 4.3 V6 | 4-speed automatic |
The V6's fuel system changed three times in the first generation: a four-barrel carburetor in 1985, throttle body injection from 1986, and central port injection from 1992. All-wheel-drive vans used a BorgWarner 4472 transfer case.
Where Astros gave trouble
Brakes and ABS in the 1990s
Hydraulic brakes are the complaint area named most on 11 model years: 1990 through 1994 and 1999 through 2004. On the 1992, 48 of 132 complaints name them. A text search of NHTSA's complaint records for 1990-1995 vans found 365 of 1,334 that mention brakes and 225 that mention ABS or anti-lock. One 1991 owner wrote: "ABS brakes in front lock up when attempting to stop."
No recall covers those complaints. We also found no GM bulletin or NHTSA investigation naming a cause. So treat a brake fault on your van as something to diagnose, not as a known defect with a known fix.
Wiper motors, 1994-1998
Visibility leads every year from 1995 to 1998, and on the 1994 it trails the brakes by just five complaints, 80 to 85. Among 1,845 unique 1994-1998 complaints in NHTSA's records, 301 mention the wipers. One 1995 owner described a motor that worked off and on, then stopped for good.
Recall 03V159, filed in April 2003, covers 1995-1997 Astros. Cracked solder joints on the wiper motor's controller board could leave the wipers working only some of the time, or not at all. Dealers replaced the circuit board and cover. Its 1,755,876 vehicles include pickups and SUVs, not Astros alone. The 1994 and 1998 vans fall outside it, though their owners complained about wipers too.
Seat backs that drop
Recall 93V187 (November 1993) covers 1985-1991 vans. Foam or vinyl trapped between the recliner and the seat frame made a soft joint, the bolts lost their torque, and they could fatigue and snap. On the driver's seat, that lets the seat back fall backward while the van is moving. Dealers cleared the joint and fitted new bolts. The 604,207 figure is the whole campaign, Safari included.
Belt recalls followed on the later vans: 97V057 for webbing on the right rear bucket seat (1996-1997), 99V009 for vans with built-in child seats (1996-1998), and 01V123 for a belt chime that could skip or quit in under four seconds on 1996-1999 minivans.
Steering and the front end
Steering is the top complaint area on the 1987, 1988 and 1989. Before that, recall 85V160, a campaign of 26,741 vehicles, covered 1985 vans whose steering gear housing could break where it bolts to the frame. On 2003 vans, recall 03V328 found that the lower ball joint boot could rub against the steering knuckle and tear, letting road grit wear the joint until the knuckle could separate and drop that corner. Dealers fitted new knuckles. On 2001-2002 vans, recall 05V099 fixed a multifunction switch fault that could leave the stop and hazard lamps dead.
Complaints and recalls by model year
"Most-named area" is the NHTSA component category that shows up in the most complaints for that year. One complaint filed under model year 1984 is left out, and so is recall 85V124, which concerns GMC's Astro semi-tractor rather than the van. A campaign that spans several model years appears in each of them.

Keep it running, or let it go?
GM never set up a special coverage program for the Astro that we could find, and the youngest one is a 2005. That leaves a plain comparison: the shop's estimate on one side, the van's value once running on the other.

How to sell your Astro whole
- Note the basics: the VIN, the last odometer reading you trust, rear- or all-wheel drive, and what's wrong.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe where it sits: a driveway, the street, behind a garage or at a shop. Tell us if it rolls freely and if any tire is flat. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it as it is. The engine, wheels, seats and catalytic converter all stay on. Mention anything already pulled, because it changes the offer.
- When the tow truck shows up, sign over the title, have ID on hand, and leave the keys with the driver if you still have them. Plate and insurance rules by state are on our after you sell page.
Title gone missing? See selling a junk car with no title. The Uplander replaced the Astro, and the Express is Chevy's full-size van.
Questions people ask
- Which Astro model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1995, with 446. The 1997 is next with 360, then the 1994 with 328. On the 1995 the most-named area is visibility, which covers the wipers; on the 1994 it is the hydraulic brakes.
- Was there a recall for Astro wiper motors?
- Yes, for some years. Recall 03V159, filed in April 2003, covers 1995-1997 Astros whose wiper motor circuit board could crack at the solder joints. Dealers replaced the board and its cover. The 1994 and 1998 vans are not part of that recall.
- Is there a recall for Astro brake or ABS problems?
- No. Brakes are the complaint area named most on 11 model years, but no recall in NHTSA's list covers them, and we found no GM bulletin or NHTSA investigation that gives a cause. Have the brakes inspected rather than assuming a known defect.
- Will you buy an all-wheel-drive Astro that doesn't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, rear-drive or all-wheel drive. Tell us which one you have and whether it rolls. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
