The heavy-duty Silverado, generation by generation
| Model years | Design | Engines | Transmissions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1999-2000 | Silverado 2500; GM's heavier GMT400 pickups stayed in production until 2000 | 6.0 V8 gas, the one EPA lists for a 1999 2500 | Four-speed automatic with that engine |
| 2001-2006 | GMT800 Silverado HD | 6.0 or 8.1 Vortec gas, 6.6 Duramax diesel | 4L80-E or Allison 1000 automatic; manuals |
| 2007-2014 | GMT900 | 6.0 Vortec gas, 6.6 Duramax | 6L90 six-speed; Allison with the diesel |
| 2015-2019 | K2XX | 6.0 gas (CNG bi-fuel from mid-2015), Duramax LML then L5P | Six-speed automatics |
| 2020-2026 | Current truck | 6.6 L8T gas V8, Duramax L5P | Allison 10-speed standard from 2024 |
The Duramax climbed from 300 hp in the 2001-2004 LB7 to 470 hp and 975 lb-ft for 2024. GM dropped the 8.1-liter big block when the GMT900 arrived and announced no replacement.
1999-2006: brakes, mostly the lines
On these years, brake tags outnumber everything else. The 2003 holds 550 complaints, the most of any year, with 148 tagged service brakes and 126 hydraulic brakes. One complaint can carry both tags.
Owners describe brake lines rusting through, fluid leaking out and the pedal sinking to the floor. One 2003 owner wrote that the pedal "went clear to the floor" at speed and the truck ended up in a ditch. These come from owners. No GM recall or extended coverage for corroded lines turned up in our search.
2007-2014: passenger air bags
From 2007 through 2011, air bags top the complaint tags every year, with 85 on the 2007 and 105 on the 2008. Recall 15V324 covered 330,198 Silverado and Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD trucks built from November 2006 to August 2008, whose passenger inflator could take on moisture and rupture.
The bigger story is Takata. GM's petition covered "approximately 5.9 million MY 2007-2014 GMT900 vehicles," and NHTSA turned it down in a notice dated November 27, 2020. GM then filed recalls 21V-050 through 21V-054, splitting the trucks by year and by state. The campaigns also cover Avalanches, Tahoes, Suburbans and other GM models. Recall 20V011 separately covered 699 trucks, 2007-2008 Silverado and Sierra 2500 and 3500 models, whose passenger air bags held interim inflators fitted in earlier Takata repairs.
2015-2019: pedal nuts, block heaters, fuel tanks
The 2015 has 11 recall campaigns, the most of any model year. Recall 14V339 (124,527 vehicles) checked power steering hose clamps on 2015 heavy-duty trucks built through September 20, 2014, since a loose clamp could drain fluid and cut both steering and brake assist. Recall 16V069 (430,771 vehicles, Silverado 1500s among them) fixed brake pedal pivot nuts that could back off and leave the pedal useless. Recall 18V578 added 42,280 more vehicles, police Tahoes among them.
Diesel owners should know two block heater recalls. Under 19V328 and then 21V496, dealers replaced engine block heaters and cords on 2017-2019 Duramax trucks, because a short could start a fire. Recall 23V047 covered 22,132 Silverado and Sierra HD trucks with dual fuel tanks whose rear tank could collapse and stall the engine.
2020-2026: rear-wheel lock-up and tailgates
Power train is the top tag on the 2020 and 2021. Recall 24V797 covers 463,295 diesel GM pickups and SUVs from 2020-2022, the 2500 and 3500 included. If the valve inside the transmission fails, the rear wheels can lock.
Recall 24V060 covers 570,434 heavy-duty Silverados and Sierras with power tailgates, where water in the release switch can unlatch the gate. Recall 21V758 is the one park-outside order in this truck's file: 3,241 trucks with replaced brake modules that could take on water and short.
Complaint and recall count by model year
Counts are complaints filed with NHTSA for each model year. Quiet years are grouped, and a grouped row counts each recall once. The top tag leaves out "unknown or other."
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes reported | Recalls | Top tag |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1999 | 90 | 2 | 0 | Hydraulic brakes |
| 2000 | 132 | 9 | 1 | Hydraulic brakes |

| 2002 | 373 | 21 | 1 | Hydraulic brakes |
| 2003 | 550 | 26 | 0 | Service brakes |
| 2004 | 385 | 19 | 0 | Service brakes |
| 2005 | 295 | 15 | 0 | Electrical |
| 2006 | 177 | 14 | 0 | Service brakes |

NHTSA's list for 2008 includes one recall by an outside equipment maker, for ceiling air conditioners on some service vehicles built on the chassis.
Keep the truck running, or sell it?
- Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. An open block heater, inflator or pedal recall is free to fix and worth closing either way.
- Diesel transmission on a 2020-2022? Ask a Chevy dealer whether 24V797's software flagged a bad valve, and whether GM's special coverage pays for the repair.
- Engine or transmission gone on an older truck? Price the job in writing and weigh it against a running truck of the same year, cab and engine. Our blown engine and bad transmission guides walk through that math.
- Rusted brake lines and frame? Ask for one written quote that covers every line and the frame, not just the first leak. If the truck already failed a state inspection, our failed inspection guide lists each state's rules.
How a heavy-duty truck sale works
- Collect the basics: VIN, mileage, cab style, bed length, gas or diesel, and what failed.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Explain the access: a gravel drive, a pasture gate, a fenced shop yard. Low tires or a steering lock that won't release help the driver plan. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave the truck whole. Sell the whole car as it sits, with the engine, transmission, wheels and exhaust in place. Tell us about a plow mount, a gooseneck hitch or anything already pulled.
- The title and keys go with the truck, and the driver will ask to see ID. Plate rules for your state are in after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which Silverado 2500HD years have the most complaints?
- The 2003, with 550. Then the 2004 (385), the 2002 (373), the 2001 (316) and the 2005 (295). Brake tags lead on most of those years. Trucks from 2009 on draw far fewer complaints per year, never more than 183.
- Did GM recall rusted brake lines on early 2500HD trucks?
- Not that we could find. Our search of GM recalls, service bulletins and coverage extensions turned up nothing on rusted brake lines. What exists is a stack of owner complaints, heaviest on 2001-2004 trucks. NHTSA lists no brake recall at all for 2001-2004 trucks. The closest is 00V222, which re-routed a kinked booster vacuum hose on some 2000 pickups and SUVs.
- My 2020-2022 Duramax has transmission trouble. Is there a recall?
- Check recall 24V797 for your VIN. It covers diesel 2020-2022 Silverados; NHTSA's summary says "the transmission control valve may fail and cause the rear wheels to lock-up." Dealers load new control software for free, and GM said a special coverage program would pay to repair transmissions that software flags as having a bad valve. Recall 26V083 rechecks some trucks fixed wrong the first time.
- Will you buy a 2500HD with a dead diesel or a seized gas V8?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickups count. Pickup is free anywhere in the US. Give us the cab, the bed, the engine, the miles and what failed.
- Is my truck in the Takata air bag recall?
- If it's a 2007-2014, run the VIN. GM filed recalls 21V-050 through 21V-054 in February 2021, after NHTSA turned down its petition to be excused from recalling them. Which one applies depends on the year and the state the truck was sold in. Dealers swap the front passenger inflator for a different one at no cost.
