Selling a Silverado 3500HD that has broken down

A one-ton Silverado with a dead Duramax, a fuel tank fault or a list of repairs bigger than its value can be sold without fixing anything. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and a dually counts. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.

NHTSA files this truck as the Silverado 3500 and holds 820 complaints and 44 recall campaigns for model years 2001 to 2026. The problem that keeps returning is the optional second fuel tank: it has drawn four separate recalls since 2017.

Four eras of the one-ton

The 3500 joined the GMT800 heavy-duty line for 2001, but the "3500HD" badge arrived with the 2007 trucks. Today's heavy-duty Silverado comes from Flint Assembly in Michigan.

Recall 17V664 spans 2011 to 2015, so it falls in two rows: the column adds to 45 against 44 distinct campaigns.

Dual fuel tanks, four times

  • 17V664, October 2017. On 2011-2015 trucks with two tanks, the front tank's low fuel sensor can stick, so the rear tank keeps transferring until the front one overfills. The extra pressure can swell that tank into the driveshaft, which can put a hole in it, and fuel leaking near an ignition source can catch fire. The campaign counts 35,292 trucks, Silverado and GMC Sierra 3500.
  • 19V088, February 2019. The same overfill on gasoline 2016-2018 trucks, 18,574 of them counting the GMC Sierra 3500. Dealers replace the rear tank's fuel pump module and inspect the front tank, replacing it when needed. The work began July 30, 2019.
  • 23V047, February 2023. On 2017-2019 2500 and 3500 trucks with the dual tank option, the rear tank can collapse. Fuel then stops moving forward and the engine stalls. Dealers inspect, replace the tank and pump module where needed, and add a vent hose; the 22,132 total includes the 2500s.
  • 26V129, March 2026. On gasoline 2025-2026 3500s with two tanks (RPO L8T and N2N), the rear pump may not send enough fuel forward, which again stalls the engine. The fix is an engine control module update at a dealer or over the air. 11,807 trucks, GMC Sierra 3500s included.

The brake pedal nut and an early warning light

Recall 16V069, from February 2016, says the brake pedal pivot nut can work loose on 2015-2016 trucks built October 1, 2013 to February 1, 2016. The pedal can then go slack or stop working. Dealers add adhesive to the nut and reinstall it at higher torque. That campaign's 430,771 vehicles also include Silverado 1500s, Tahoe police vehicles and GMC Sierras. Recall 18V578 came back to the same nut in August 2018; its 42,280 vehicles also take in Silverado 2500 and 1500 special service trucks, Tahoe police vehicles and GMC Sierras.

On 2001-2002 trucks with the 6.6 diesel, recall 01V220 found the brake warning light might stay dark with the fluid low. Dealers moved one wire in the underhood electrical center. Hydraulic brakes top the complaint list for each model year from 2001 through 2004.

On 2007-2008 2500HD and 3500HD trucks built November 28, 2006 to August 29, 2008, recall 15V324 replaces a passenger front air bag inflator that can rupture; its 330,198 trucks include GMC's. Recall 20V011 later swapped out non-desiccated interim inflators on 699 of them. On the 2007 and 2008, air bag complaints outnumber any other kind: 12 of 39 and 14 of 31.

The later GMT900 years sit inside GM's make-wide Takata campaign. NHTSA's denial of GM's petition, published in the Federal Register on November 27, 2020, swept in roughly 5.9 million GMT900-platform vehicles, pickups and SUVs alike, built for 2007 through 2014. Recalls 21V-050 through 21V-054 followed in February 2021, taking in 2009-2014 Silverado 2500 and 3500 trucks by model year and state. Dealers fit an alternate passenger inflator free; one that explodes can throw sharp metal fragments.

Recall 14V407 covers 2007-2011 HD trucks with an auxiliary battery, built January 18, 2007 to June 22, 2011. Too much current can melt a fusible link and start a fire, so dealers fit a jumper harness with a 40-amp inline fuse. On 2017-2019 Duramax trucks with the optional block heater, the cord or its terminals can short circuit: recalls 19V328 (April 2019, 318,374 trucks) and 21V496 (July 2021, 338,020), both counting GMC trucks too.

Recall 21V758 is the one NHTSA flags as park outside. On 2021-2022 trucks whose brake control module was swapped on the assembly line, the brake pressure modulator valve bolts may not be tight and water can get in. Owners were told to park outdoors, away from buildings, until a dealer replaces the valve assembly.

Newer trucks

  • 20V142: hood-latch striker wires on 1,909 trucks from 2020 may not have been heat-treated, so they can snap and the hood could open at speed.
  • 23V549: on 3,893 trucks from 2024 the steering gear shaft can fracture and separate from the steering arm, leaving no steering control at all.
  • 24V060 and 24V894: water can short the power tailgate's release switch so the gate drops open on its own. The campaigns count 570,434 and 131,231 trucks across the Silverado and Sierra HD.
  • 26V083: 1,055 trucks from 2020 that were repaired wrongly under transmission recall 24V797 can have a control valve fail and lock the rear wheels.

Recall and complaint counts, 2001-2026

Our count of NHTSA's raw Silverado 3500 records, taken October 10, 2026. A recall spanning several years counts in each. One 2007 campaign was filed by CUES, an equipment maker, for service vehicles built on the chassis. The last few model years are still young, so their counts will grow.

Keep it working, or sell it?

On a heavy truck the recall list comes before any repair quote.

  1. Search the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. A dual-tank truck with an open fuel recall, or a 2007-2014 truck with an open inflator recall, goes to a Chevrolet dealer first.
  2. Diesel or Allison failure? Ask for a written estimate, then price a running 3500 with the same engine and similar miles in your area. Our blown engine guide walks through that call.
  3. Thinking of selling the Duramax or the Allison on its own? Read part it out or sell it whole first.

How a whole-truck sale goes

  1. Collect the details: VIN, mileage, engine (gas or Duramax), and what has failed.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Explain where the truck is and what's on it: a farm lane, a driveway, a job site or a shop. Mention dual rear wheels, a flatbed, a gooseneck hitch or a plow, so the right equipment comes. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Sell it complete. Leave the wheels, batteries and emissions parts on. If anything has already come off, list it, because it moves the offer.
  5. On the day, have the title and your ID ready and hand over the keys. After you sell explains each state's plate rules.

Questions people ask

Which Silverado 3500 model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2001, with 72 as of October 10, 2026. The 2006 and 2015 have 52 each, the 2016 has 51, and the 2002 and 2024 have 50 each. A recent truck with few complaints may simply be young.
My dual-tank truck stalls with fuel still in the rear tank. Which recall fits?
It depends on the year. 17V664 covers 2011-2015 trucks, 19V088 gasoline 2016-2018 trucks, 23V047 2017-2019 trucks, and 26V129 gasoline 2025-2026 trucks. The free lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls names the open one for your VIN.
Is my 2007-2014 Silverado 3500 in a Takata air bag recall?
Likely, but check the VIN. 2007-2008 HD trucks built from late November 2006 through August 29, 2008 are in 15V324, and some got interim inflators that 20V011 replaces. The 2009-2014 trucks fall under GM's 21V-050 to 21V-054 campaigns, split by model year and by state.
Will you buy a dually with a flatbed, a hitch or a plow on it?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes heavy pickups like this one. Describe the bed, hitch or plow when you ask for an offer, since it changes both the loading and the offer.
Why can't I find EPA mileage figures for a 3500?
Because there aren't any. fueleconomy.gov lists the Silverado 2500 and 3500 among pickups exempt from federal fuel economy rules, since their gross vehicle weight rating is over 8,500 pounds.
