Selling a Chevrolet Uplander that's past fixing

GM built the Uplander for just four U.S. model years, so the newest one is now 18 years old. If yours won't start, a sliding door has given up, or the next repair costs more than the van is worth, you can sell it whole. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Four model years from Doraville

Production ran from June 20, 2004 to September 26, 2008 at GM's Doraville Assembly plant in Georgia. The Uplander replaced both the Venture and the Astro. It shared the U-body (GMT201) platform and the factory with the Saturn Relay, Buick Terraza and Pontiac Montana SV6. When GM left the minivan market in 2008, it stopped building them and closed the plant. Canada and Mexico still got 2009 models.

Every Uplander has a V6 and the 4-speed 4T65-E automatic. The short wheelbase measures 113.0 inches and the long one 121.1.

Why did all-wheel drive go? Wikipedia says the system "could not handle the torque of the 3.9 L engine," so it left with the 3.5.

What owners complained about

The power sliding doors

About one Uplander complaint in five brings up the sliding doors. A text search of NHTSA's complaint records found 122 of 578 unique 2005-2008 complaints mentioning a sliding or power door: 55 on the 2005, 32 on the 2006, 24 on the 2007 and 11 on the 2008. A 2006 driver reported the driver-side door sliding open during a right turn at about 20 mph. A 2005 owner said the passenger-side door motor buzzed while driving, as though the door were opening.

GM bulletin 07-08-64-007D, revised in July 2008 and filed in NHTSA's investigation EA07-019, lists what dealers were seeing on the Uplander and its three sister vans:

  • the motor runs on for up to three seconds after the door shuts, which owners may hear as grinding;
  • the door reverses, or starts to close and then opens again;
  • the door won't open by itself when the outside handle is pulled.

For the grinding, the bulletin gives three causes: "a center roller bracket may be bent or have loose rollers," door software that isn't current, and "the door is closing too quickly." In April 2008 GM told dealers that "95% of the Power Sliding Door Modules returned for analysis do not test as defective," and made them fill out a form before ordering another.

NHTSA's categories point the same way without proving it: across 2005-2009, 93 complaints are filed under electrical system, 90 under structure and 59 under latches, locks and linkages.

A seat latch recall, 2005

Recall 05V061 (February 2005) covers 18,850 minivans. In a GM side-impact test, the outboard release handle on the second-row bucket seat could be tripped, and the seat's rear latches could let go early. Dealers took the handle off and capped the bare metal stud with black plastic.

Stability control on the 2008

The 2008 is the only year where electronic stability control makes the top three complaint areas, with 11 of its 119 complaints. One owner called Chevrolet "to ask why stability control light went on when going over a bump in road." No recall covers it.

Recalls filed under the Uplander for other vehicles

NHTSA lists four more campaigns under the Uplander, and three describe other vehicles. Recall 05V287 (2005) deals with parking brake calipers that could slip, but its text names sport utility vehicles. Recalls 05V552 and 06V051 (2006) fixed tire and loading labels on trucks, SUVs and cargo vans. The one worth checking is 10V110: in 2010, Braun Corporation reported that the trailing arm on 2005-2008 GM low-floor wheelchair-accessible minivans might not be welded well enough, and the rear axle could partly separate. It covered 5,375 vehicles.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Uplander counts here were tallied by us from NHTSA's bulk downloads dated October 10, 2026. Recall 10V110 counts in all four years. NHTSA also holds 2 complaints on 2009 Uplanders, the Canada and Mexico build, which are left out here.

Repair it or let it go?

  • Door trouble? Before paying for a new door module, ask the shop to go through the checks in GM's bulletin first. For the grinding, those start with the center roller bracket and the door programming. GM's own parts review found most returned modules weren't faulty.
  • Rough running or reduced power on a 2008? Special coverage 14582 paid for the throttle position sensor for "10 years or 120,000 miles," counted from the day the van went into service. That window has now closed on every Uplander.
  • Engine or transmission gone? Weigh the quote against what a running Uplander sells for nearby. The guides on a bad transmission and a blown engine walk through the decision.

Selling the van whole

  1. Jot down the VIN, the odometer reading, which V6 it has (3.5 or 3.9) and what has failed.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it's parked (your driveway, the curb out front, a mechanic's lot) and whether it rolls. If a sliding door won't latch, mention it up front. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep it complete. The seats, wheels and catalytic converter stay on. If anything has been removed, say so, because that changes the offer.
  5. At pickup, the driver will need the title, and you'll need a photo ID. After you sell explains what to do with the plates and insurance in your state.

If the van won't start at all, our non-running car guide covers what to expect. Comparing other Chevy vans? See the Venture and the Astro.

Questions people ask

Was the Uplander's power sliding door ever recalled?
Not in NHTSA's recall list. GM gave dealers a diagnosis bulletin instead, 07-08-64-007D, and a copy sits in NHTSA's investigation file EA07-019. We did not find what that investigation concluded, so we don't state a finding.
Does any GM warranty extension still cover my Uplander?
Not that we found. Special coverage 14582 on the throttle position sensor of 2008-2009 Uplanders ran "10 years or 120,000 miles (193,000 km), whichever occurs first," and every van has now aged out of it.
Which Uplander model year has the most complaints?
The 2005, the first year, with 196 complaints filed with NHTSA. The 2006 has 158, the 2008 has 119 and the 2007 has 109.
Will you buy an Uplander with a sliding door that won't close?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you sell the whole van as it sits. Tell us which door is stuck and whether the van still drives. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
