Selling a leaking or dead Chevrolet Venture
A Venture that drips coolant, slides a door open on its own or sits dead in the driveway can be sold the way it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. Pickup is free anywhere in the US, and the van leaves in one piece.

Every Venture has the same 3.4-liter V6 and four-speed automatic, so its problems follow the model year rather than the engine choice. Figures on this page are our own count of NHTSA records, downloaded October 10, 2026.
One body, one engine, nine model years
GM built the Venture at Doraville, Georgia, from July 1996 to June 24, 2005, for the 1997 through 2005 model years. It replaced the Lumina APV and was sold beside two twins, the Oldsmobile Silhouette and the Pontiac Trans Sport, renamed Montana for 1999.
- Lengths: a 112-inch and a 120-inch wheelbase from the start. The long three-door was dropped for 1999.
- Power: the 3.4-liter LA1 V6 made 180 hp, then 185 after 1999, always through a 4T65-E four-speed automatic.
- All-wheel drive: GM's Versatrak, on long vans only, from 2002. It and the short body were both gone for 2005.
- Successor: the Uplander, which kept one long wheelbase.
Coolant on the driveway: the intake gasket
Engine and engine cooling is the Venture's biggest complaint category, 453 of 2,335, and it leads every model year from 1997 through 2002. In a separate pull of NHTSA complaint texts, 211 of 513 engine and cooling complaints mention the intake manifold gasket. Owners write about coolant leaks. One says the van "required replacement of intake manifold gaskets" at about 60,000 miles.
NHTSA lists no recall for the gasket, and no GM extended coverage for it was found. The one program known to have touched it is closed. GM's Dex-Cool class action listed 1995-2003 cars and vans with the 3.1- or 3.4-liter V6 and a nylon or silicone lower intake gasket, the Venture among them. It refunded covered cooling repairs on vans under seven years old and under 150,000 miles, counted from the original buyer's delivery. The last day to mail a claim was October 27, 2008.
A slow leak is cheap to ignore until the engine runs low and overheats. If yours already has, the blown engine guide explains how to judge the damage.
Three recalls for one door
The passenger-side power sliding door is the Venture's recall story. Of 261 structure complaints in the API pull, 144 mention the sliding door.
- 01V067, March 2001. On 1997-2001 vans with a passenger-side power door, the door can close without latching and then open while moving, "particularly when the vehicle ascends a hill, makes a turn, or travels over a rough road surface." Dealers fitted a new unlatch actuator. 477,011 vehicles.
- 01V264, August 2001. A follow-up for vans already serviced under campaign 01013 between April and August 2001, plus some early 2001 builds. Dealers inspected the door and put in a new unlatch actuator where needed. This campaign, 248,737 vehicles, names the Venture, the Pontiac Montana and Trans Sport, and the Oldsmobile Silhouette. Owner letters went out from October 22, 2001.
- 04V597, December 2004. On 1997-2005 vans with second-row buckets or captain's chairs and a passenger-side power door, a passenger holding the inside handle while the motor opens the door can have an arm pushed into the seat back or armrest. Dealers replaced the handle; until then GM told owners not to use it. 717,302 vehicles.
Each figure is a whole-campaign count. The follow-up names all four GM vans, and the other two describe "minivans" with no model list, so none of the three is a Venture-only number.
Steering, air bags and the smaller campaigns
Steering is second only to the engine on the 1997, with 69 complaints. Recall 02V286 explains part of it. On GM vehicles assembled from January 1, 1996 to October 31, 1997, including 1997-1998 Ventures, the tabs that hold the rack's lower pinion bearing in place were not always crimped. The pinion shaft can be pushed upward in left turns, and steering gets much heavier. The campaign covered 1,159,156 GM cars and minivans. In the API pull, 60 of 146 Venture steering complaints mention the rack or pinion.
The rest are narrower. These counts are also whole campaigns and may include the Venture's twins:
- 02V222: on 2002-2003 vans the driver's air bag inflator could crack at a weld when it fires, throwing pieces and leaving the bag underinflated. 133,221 GM cars, minivans and SUVs.
- 98V145: 1997-1998 second- and third-row bucket and split-bench seat latches had no covers, and a finger could be "severely injured or severed." 125,990 vans.
- 98V072: on 1997-1998 vans with traction control, the wiper linkage arm can chafe a brake line. 55,154 vans.
- 98V131: on the 1998, a broken shift cable fitting or loose linkage means moving the lever to Park may not lock the transmission, so the van can roll. 38,540 vans.
- 07V349: the fuel tank inlet check valve on 2001-2004 Ventures, and some Buick Rendezvous and Pontiac Aztek models, can crack and let fuel collect on the tank. Dealers replaced the tank. 20,594 vehicles, and the last Venture campaign, mailed from December 4, 2007.
NHTSA counts for each model year
The table gives each model year's NHTSA complaint total. Two are filed under 1996, a year before the first Venture model year. A campaign covering several years appears in each year's recall count.
| Model year | Complaints | Injuries reported | Top component | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1996 | 2 | 0 | Latches; engine (1 each) | 0 |
| 1997 | 432 | 13 | Engine and engine cooling (73) | 6 |
| 1998 | 409 | 39 | Engine and engine cooling (102) | 7 |
| 1999 | 349 | 34 | Engine and engine cooling (107) | 4 |
| 2000 | 350 | 42 | Engine and engine cooling (70) | 5 |
| 2001 | 222 | 38 | Engine and engine cooling (35) | 9 |
| 2002 | 220 | 26 | Engine and engine cooling (36) | 3 |
| 2003 | 185 | 34 | Exterior lighting (27) | 5 |
| 2004 | 124 | 21 | Electrical system (33) | 3 |
| 2005 | 42 | 9 | Latches and structure (7 each) | 1 |
In total the complaints report 143 crashes, 37 fires, 256 injuries and 10 deaths. The 2001 carries the most recall campaigns, nine. NHTSA's frontal crash test gave the 1997 four stars for both front seats; the 2001 also earned five stars for the driver in its side test.
Worth repairing?
Get a written quote. Then look up local asking prices for running Ventures of the same year, length and mileage. A repair that swallows most of that figure is money better kept.
- Look up open recalls first. Put the VIN into NHTSA's recall search. Door, steering and fuel tank campaigns all cover whole ranges of these vans.
- Coolant leak, still running? Ask the shop whether the leak is the intake gasket or something worse before you approve the job.
- Overheated, or won't start? The non-running car guide walks through what to check before you write it off.
Getting the Venture picked up
- Gather the details: VIN, mileage, short or long body, and what is wrong, such as the leak, a dead battery or a jammed door.
- Start an offer online, or phone (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it sits: in the garage, at the curb, behind a repair shop. Say whether it rolls and whether every door opens, so the driver can load it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it whole, seats and wheels included. Anything already pulled out should be mentioned up front, since missing parts change the offer.
- On loading day, sign the title across, show identification and give the driver the keys. Your state sets the plate rules, and after you sell lists them.

Questions people ask
- Why does my Venture keep losing coolant?
- The intake manifold gasket is the pattern in owner reports. In a pull of NHTSA complaint texts, 211 of 513 engine and cooling complaints on the Venture mention it. There is no recall for it, and no GM extended coverage turned up. A lawsuit over GM's Dex-Cool coolant ended in a settlement that once refunded some cooling repairs on 1997-2003 Ventures, but it stopped taking claims after October 27, 2008.
- The power sliding door opens by itself or won't latch. Was that recalled?
- On 1997-2001 vans with a passenger-side power door, yes: recall 01V067 (March 2001) and its follow-up 01V264 (August 2001) put in a new unlatch actuator where needed. A third campaign, 04V597, replaced the interior handle on 1997-2005 vans that pair second-row buckets or captain's chairs with a passenger-side power door. Punch the VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls to learn if yours got the work.
- Which Ventures have all-wheel drive?
- Only long-wheelbase vans from 2002 to 2004, with GM's Versatrak system. It was dropped for 2005 along with the short body. If yours has it, put that in your offer request.
- Will you take a Venture that overheated and now won't start?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and a minivan with a cooked engine qualifies. Tell us it won't start, whether it rolls in Neutral, and if any doors are stuck. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
