Selling a junk or broken Chrysler 200
One model year carries the Chrysler 200's record. Owners have filed 4,222 complaints with NHTSA about the 200, and 1,992 of them are about the 2015, the first year of the redesigned car with the 9-speed automatic. No other year comes within a third of that.

Two different cars under one name
Chrysler built the 200 at Sterling Heights, Michigan, and sold it as 2011 to 2017 models. Wikipedia lists two generations, on different platforms (JS, then Compact Wide).
First generation, 2011-2014: the Sebring's successor
The first 200 replaced the Sebring and sat on the same JS platform. Power came from a 2.4-liter World four-cylinder or a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, and Wikipedia lists a 4-speed Ultradrive 40TES automatic.
On the 2012, 2013 and 2014, owners named air bags more often than any other component: 129, 158 and 63 complaints. Three recalls on these cars point at the controllers behind the restraints:
- 13V282 (2011-2013): dealers reflash the Totally Integrated Power Module or swap the restraint controller. NHTSA counts 442,320 vehicles in it, Sebrings and Dodge Avengers among them.
- 16V668 (2011-2014): the occupant restraint controller is replaced for the seat belt pretensioners. Its 1,435,625 vehicles include the Sebring, Avenger, Caliber, Patriot and Compass.
- 17V640 (2012-2013): a part in the same controller can stop the active head restraints from working. That campaign counts 363,930 vehicles across the 200, Avenger and 2012 Liberty.
On the 2011, the engine leads with 85 of 371 complaints. Two engine recalls touch this generation. Recall 11V487 had Chrysler replace engines in some 2012 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep models, 667 vehicles in all. Under recall 13V552, 2013 cars with the 2.4 got a new balance shaft module because of abrasive debris; its 521 vehicles also include the Avenger, Compass and Patriot. The 2013 also has a fuel tank control valve recall, 13V043.
Second generation, 2015-2017: the 9-speed years
The 2015 was a new car on Fiat Chrysler's Compact Wide platform, with available all-wheel drive. It used a 2.4-liter Tigershark four or the 3.6 Pentastar, both with a 9-speed 948TE automatic. Wikipedia lists the Jeep Cherokee and the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica as related cars.
On the 2015, electrical system complaints lead with 533, then power train with 387 and air bags with 311. That year also carries 99 complaints that report a crash and 24 that report a fire. Eight recall campaigns list it, more than any other 200 year:
- 15V090: the parking pawl on 9-speed cars built March 9 to December 15, 2014. Dealers inspect, and a transmission found with contamination or a park rod is replaced. 21,466 vehicles.
- 16V529: a 9-speed transmission sensor. Dealers reprogram the engine and transmission computers. Its 329,540 vehicles include the Cherokee, Renegade, ProMaster and Fiat 500X.
- 15V470: a power distribution center connector. Dealers replace the C4 connector on 3.6 cars or the transmission wiring. 77,971 vehicles.
- 14V392: rear shocks with a weak weld that can come loose at one end. The 20,347-vehicle campaign also covers the 2014 Cherokee and Ram 1500.
- 15V461: a radio software vulnerability, fixed by a USB drive mailed to owners. The 1,416,903 count spans Ram trucks, the 300, Charger, Challenger and Jeeps.
- 14V480 (door wiring harness, 8 vehicles), 16V114 (occupant classification module, 71 vehicles) and 18V332 (engine computer software, 2015-2017, in a 4,815,661-vehicle campaign across many FCA models).
The 2016 drops to 344 complaints, led by air bags (88) and engine (72), and adds recall 16V589 for chassis fasteners on 192 cars built May 24-25, 2016. The 2017 has 43. Wikipedia says production ended on December 2, 2016, after a short run of 2017 models, and those last 200s, being the newest, have had less time for owners to file complaints.
NHTSA complaints and recalls, year by year
These counts come from NHTSA's public complaint data, current to October 10, 2026. A few complaints are filed under 2010 and 2018, years the 200 was not sold as; they are shown as filed. One recall campaign can list several years.

| 2013 | 628 | 23 | 35 | 5 | Air bags (158) |
| 2014 | 192 | 15 | 19 | 1 | Air bags (63) |

Repair it or sell it?
On a 200, the deciding number is a running one's resale value for your year. A written quote near that figure means selling unrepaired.
- Run the VIN first. NHTSA's lookup shows open recalls. On a 2015, check 15V090, 16V529 and 15V470 before paying for transmission or wiring work. Our open recall guide covers selling with one still open.
- 9-speed acting up on a 2015-2017? If no recall covers it, get the diagnosis in writing. The bad transmission guide walks through the decision.
- Warning lights and dead accessories? Electrical faults lead the 2015's complaints. See electrical problems.
- Engine gone on an early car? Read blown engine before you put money into a 2011-2014.

Selling your 200 whole
- Write down the VIN, odometer reading and what's wrong. Note whether it starts, drives or only rolls.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it sits. Driveway, parking deck, repair shop or back yard are all fine. Tell us about flat tires or a car stuck in Park, so the truck arrives ready. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep the 200 in one piece. If the battery or wheels are already off, that's fine; just mention it.
- At pickup, the title, keys and your ID go to the driver. Plates stay or go by state law; see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which Chrysler 200 model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2015, with 1,992 complaints as of October 10, 2026. That is nearly half of the 4,222 filed on the 200. The 2012 (638) and 2013 (628) come next. The 2017 has only 43, but it was a short final run, and the last 200s are the youngest, with the least time behind them to gather complaints.
- My 2015 or 2016 Chrysler 200 has a 9-speed that shifts badly. Is there a recall?
- Two 2015 recalls cover the 9-speed: 15V090 for the parking pawl and 16V529 for a transmission sensor, where dealers reprogram the engine and transmission computers. To learn if either one is still open on your 200, enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Will you buy a Chrysler 200 that won't start or won't go into gear?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us what it does, if it can be pushed, and its location.
- Should I pull parts off my 200 before selling it?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. If a part is already gone, such as the battery or a wheel, mention it up front.
