Sell a dead Dodge Intrepid as it sits
Engine complaints define the Intrepid. Of 6,225 complaints owners filed with NHTSA, 2,674 name the engine and engine cooling, and 2,440 of those are on the second-generation cars, 1998 to 2004. On the 2000 alone it's 765 of 1,065.

Two generations, two sets of problems
We took these numbers from the NHTSA records we downloaded October 10, 2026. Two more complaints are filed under a 1992 model year. Every Intrepid was a front-wheel-drive full-size sedan on Chrysler's LH platform. Wikipedia names Brampton Assembly in Ontario as the plant, and one line also names Chrysler's plant at Newark, Delaware.
1993-1997: fuel rails, steering and suspension
The first Intrepid used a 3.3-liter V6 with a 4-speed 42LE automatic; a 3.5 was also offered. Dodge built 70,046 of them for 1993 and 128,190 for 1994.
These five years hold 2,564 complaints. The gasoline fuel system tops the 1993 (111 of 408) and the 1997 (75 of 344). Two fuel rail recalls match it:
- 98V130000 (1993, 3.3 engines): the fuel rail tube O-rings were less robust than those used in later years. Dealers replaced the fuel rail.
- 98V184000 (1993-1997, 3.5 engines): the thermoset fuel rail could seep fuel at its O-rings or through fine cracks. The 722,600-vehicle campaign covers other cars with the 3.5 as well.
Power train leads the 1994 (120 of 718) and the 1995 (110 of 589). Steering leads the 1996, with 135 of 505. Recall 94V024000 covers 1994 cars where the right tie rod could rub through the transmission wiring harness, which could stall the engine.
The front suspension had its own campaign. Under 99V215000, the brackets holding the lower control arms on 1993-1995 cars could crack and separate from the engine cradle; dealers reinforced the cradle. Recall 04V021000 covers 1993-1999 cars whose floor shifter interlock might fail, freeing the shifter from Park with no key in the ignition. Its 2,315,768 vehicles span many Chrysler models.
1998-2004: the engine years
The second Intrepid brought new all-aluminum engines: a 2.7-liter V6 rated at 200 horsepower and a 3.2-liter V6 at 225, with 3.5-liter V6s on the top trims. The 3.2 was dropped for 2002, and the R/T ended in 2003, Wikipedia says.
These cars hold 3,659 complaints, and engine and cooling leads every one of the seven years. It peaks on the 1999 (657 of 997) and the 2000 (765 of 1,065). NHTSA's component counts don't name the engine size. Wikipedia does say some second-generation 2.7-liter engines were ruined by oil sludge, which clogs the fine oil passages, and that five class action suits over it were combined in federal court in New Jersey in February 2009.
The recalls on these cars are about seats and belts, not engines:
- 03V035000 (1998-2002): seat back recliner bolts could break and let the seat back fall back.
- 00V034000 (1999-2000): a badly made bolt on the shoulder belt height adjuster.
- 01V273000 (2000-2001): non-sunroof cars didn't meet the interior impact standard; owners were sent a storage bin to attach to the B-pillar.
The 2000 has seven recall campaigns, the most of any year. The 2003 and 2004 have none.
Intrepid complaints by year
A single campaign may touch many of these years, so don't sum the recall figures.

Worth a new engine?
On a sedan this old, an engine swap can easily cost more than the car is worth running. Price the job, then look up what a running Intrepid of that year sells for.

- Engine knocking or seized? See blown engine.

Selling your Intrepid whole
- Pull together the VIN, odometer reading and engine size, plus what's wrong.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Let us know the location and if the wheels turn. A car that's been sitting with flat tires is fine; just mention it.
- Keep the Intrepid in one piece, with its catalytic converter and wheels. Anything already removed changes the offer.
- Have the title and ID at pickup. Lost the title? See selling with no title.

Questions people ask
- Which Intrepid model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2000 has the most, 1,065 in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file. The 1999 (997) is next, then the 1994 (718), the 2001 (656) and the 1995 (589). The 2003 and 2004 have far fewer, 106 and 129.
- Was there a lawsuit over the Intrepid's 2.7 engine?
- Wikipedia says five class action suits over alleged oil sludge in second-generation 2.7-liter V6 engines were consolidated in the District of New Jersey in February 2009. It doesn't give an outcome, and this page doesn't either.
- Will you buy an Intrepid with a seized engine?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us the engine won't turn over and where the car is parked.
- What replaced the Intrepid?
- The rear-wheel-drive LX cars: the 2005 Dodge Magnum and the 2006 Dodge Charger, according to Wikipedia.
