Selling an old Dodge Dynasty as it sits
Brakes are the Dodge Dynasty's story in NHTSA's records. Hydraulic service brakes are the area owners named most, 102 of 460 complaints, and three of the car's eight recalls involve brakes. Two of those three are about the anti-lock system.

Two stretches of the same car
Wikipedia says Chrysler built the Dynasty at its Belvidere, Illinois plant beside the Chrysler New Yorker, from 1987 to 1993. It was a front-wheel-drive C-body sedan with a 2.5 liter four, a 3.0 liter Mitsubishi V6 or a 3.3 liter V6, and three- or four-speed automatics. It replaced the Dodge 600 and gave way to the Intrepid. The wheelbase grew slightly for 1991, from 104.3 to 104.5 inches, which splits the run in two.
1988-1990
Complaints were lighter here: 14, 55 and 55. Power train leads the 1989 with 20 and engine and cooling follows with 13. Recall 89V237 swapped in a revised valve cover, sealed with RTV instead of a gasket, after gaskets on 1989-1990 cars could shift and let oil out; the campaign counted 634,000 vehicles. Recall 90V080 replaced air bag inflator modules missing diffuser holes on 257 cars.
The 1990 starts the ABS recalls. Recall 91V191 gave 1990-1991 cars a high pressure ABS hose of a new design, because the old one could leak or pull loose where it was crimped. Recall 96V099, reported in 1996, reaches 1990-1993 Dynastys: worn piston seals in the ABS hydraulic control unit can ruin its pump motor. Recall 91V004 dealt with water leaking under the windshield cowl and corroding the blower motor resistor on 1990-1991 cars.
1991-1993
The later cars draw most of the complaints: 108, 144 and 83. Fuel system leads the 1991 with 23. On the 1992, brakes lead with 34, then engine and cooling (26) and steering (23). The steering number fits recall 92V015. On the Dynasty, zinc plating could make the upper steering column coupling bolt brittle and prone to breaking, so dealers swapped in a phosphate-plated bolt.
Recall 90V162 torqued front brake caliper guide pin bolts that could loosen on 1991 cars. Recall 91V122 fixed front seat belts that could become hard to latch on 1991s.
Complaints and recalls by model year
What Dynasty owners told NHTSA, tallied October 10, 2026: reports, not a judgment of the car. The 1993s have had a little less time than the 1988s to gather them. Since some Dynasty recalls reach several years, adding the recall figures gives you more than 8.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Fires | Injured | Recall campaigns | Area named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1988 | 14 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | Hydraulic brakes (6) |
| 1989 | 55 | 1 | 5 | 1 | 1 | Power train (20) |
| 1990 | 55 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 5 | Hydraulic brakes (17) |
| 1991 | 108 | 6 | 4 | 6 | 5 | Fuel system (23) |
| 1992 | 144 | 9 | 8 | 11 | 2 | Hydraulic brakes (34) |
| 1993 | 83 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 1 | Hydraulic brakes (22) |
| 1994 (filed under that year) | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Suspension (1) |
| All years | 460 | 23 | 20 | 21 | 8 | Hydraulic brakes (102) |
Each vehicle count above is for the full campaign, and that can include other Chrysler models built next to the Dynasty.
Is a Dynasty worth fixing now?
Get a quote on paper and weigh it against local prices for a Dynasty that runs. If the repair comes close, selling it whole makes more sense.
- Soft pedal or ABS light: see bad brakes. Run the VIN at NHTSA too.
- Sat for years: read car sitting for years before you try to start it.
- Just old and tired: old or high mileage covers your choices.
Selling the Dynasty whole
- Find what you can: VIN, mileage, and which engine it has.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Give us the location. An old Dynasty sitting in a garage or backyard often has flat tires or frozen brakes. Mention it, and the driver will bring a winch. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it as it is. Don't pull the converter or wheels. Missing parts change the offer.
- Papers: you'll want your title and a photo ID. Title went missing long ago? Start with selling with no title. Plate rules are in after you sell.
More older Dodges: the 600, Spirit and Aries, or every Dodge we cover.
Questions people ask
- Which Dynasty model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1992, with 144 of the model's 460 as of October 10, 2026. The 1991 is next with 108. A 1993 has had a slightly shorter window for complaints than a 1988.
- What was the Dynasty's ABS recall?
- Recall 96V099, reported in 1996, covers 1990-1993 Dynastys. Brake actuator piston seals in the ABS hydraulic unit can wear and take the pump motor with them. Dealers were to test the system and repair it, and the notice says the warranty on ABS parts would be extended. An earlier recall, 91V191, replaced an ABS high pressure hose on 1990-1991 cars.
- Do you take a Dynasty that's been parked for years and doesn't start?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Let us know about flat tires or frozen brakes.
