Selling an old Dodge Monaco
The Monaco that EPA lists for 1990-1992 is not the big rear-drive Dodge most people picture. Wikipedia says it was built in Brampton, Ontario, drove its front wheels through a 4-speed ZF automatic, and was related to the Eagle Premier and Renault Premier. The car in the photo above is the older kind, a 1973 hardtop.

One name, two very different cars
The Monaco arrived for 1965 as Dodge's full-size flagship, replacing the Custom 880. Through 1978 it was a rear-drive car with straight-six and V8 engines, built on the C-body and later the B-body. The name came back for 1990-1992 on a front-drive sedan with a 3.0-liter PRV V6. This page's complaint and recall data covers only those last three years.
What 1990-1992 owners reported
Visibility leads, with 18 complaints. NHTSA files the heater core under that same heading, and recall 94V006000 covers it on all three years. The end cap joining the heater core to the cooling system could rupture and let hot coolant into the cabin. The fix was a bypass valve. That campaign counted 125,000 vehicles, which may include other models.
Brakes come next, with 13. Five brake recalls touch these cars:
- Front brake hoses routed so they flex and crack (90V205000, 1990).
- A rear brake tube the fuel tank heat shield can rub through (91V027000, 1990-1991).
- An ABS high-pressure hose that may leak or come off (91V191000, 1991).
- ABS pump wear, with an extended ABS warranty (96V099000, 1991-1992).
- Brake rotors replaced with corrosion-coated ones in certain states (98V005000, 1990-1991).
Seat belts have 7 complaints, 6 of them on the 1991. Recall 95V213000 covers automatic shoulder belts that can stop working.
Two other recalls round out the nine: a steering shaft that may separate (90V058000) and a battery feed wire that can rub and short (91V042000).
Year by year
Counts reflect owner complaints in NHTSA's records at October 10, 2026; the recall vehicle numbers above are campaign-wide.
| Year | Complaints | Crashes | Injured | Recalls | Parts named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1990 | 8 | 0 | 0 | 6 | Visibility 5, brakes 1, engine 1 |
| 1991 | 37 | 3 | 1 | 7 | Visibility 12, brakes 10, seat belts 6 |
| 1992 | 9 | 0 | 1 | 3 | Power train 2, brakes 2, visibility 1 |
Keep it or let it go?
Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup to see what's on record. A Monaco from these years is more than 30 years old. If the brakes have locked up from sitting, see bad brakes. If it simply hasn't moved in years, sitting for years covers what usually goes wrong. If the repair bill would top what a running Monaco brings, repairs cost more than it's worth walks through the choice.
