Selling a dead or junk Dodge Magnum

The first Magnum year carries most of the record. Of the Magnum's 1,163 NHTSA complaints counted October 10, 2026, 638 belong to the 2005. Air bags lead it with 127. Two of the Magnum's 13 recall campaigns, both for air bag inflators, tell owners not to drive the car until it is repaired.

Where the Magnum came from

Wikipedia dates this Magnum's production from February 3, 2004 to September 25, 2008, at Brampton Assembly in Ontario. It rode on the Chrysler LX platform with the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, a platform related to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W211). It was a Ralph Gilles design, sold with either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. Dodge had used the Magnum name before, on a 1978-1979 car sold in the US and Canada.

Complaints and recalls by model year

These are complaints Magnum owners made to NHTSA, as of October 10, 2026. Each is a report, not a ruling. The 2008 cars have had fewer years than the 2005s to draw them. Campaigns span years, so the recall column sums past 13.

Problems by year group

2005 and 2006: air bags, power train, engine

Air bags lead the 2005 at 127 complaints, then power train (86) and fuel/propulsion (74). On the 2006, engine moves to the top with 62, then power train (48) and air bags (47).

The air bag recalls stack up on these years. Recall 14V770 replaces the front passenger inflator on 2005 Magnums, in a campaign of 250,896 that includes Ram, Durango, Dakota and Chrysler 300 models. Recalls 15V313 and 16V352, the two DO NOT DRIVE campaigns, cover every Magnum year from 2005 to 2008.

The power train complaints have a recall to match. Recall 05V460 adds a bracket to hold the park pawl anchor shaft in the 42RLE automatic on 2005-2006 cars, in a 256,409-vehicle campaign of pickups, SUVs and cars. On 2006 Magnums with the 2.7 liter engine, recall 06V149 checks rear brake tubes that can rub the exhaust gas recirculation tube.

Three early recalls fixed assembly slips on 2005 cars: shoulder belt turning loop bolts (04V335), missing rear floorpan welds on 21 cars (04V333), and loose battery cable fasteners (04V334).

2007 and 2008: fewer complaints, an ignition recall

Complaints fall to 110 on the 2007, where power train leads at 37, and to 93 on the 2008. On the 2008, electrical leads with 58, and the big 2008 recall falls in the same category: 14V567 replaces the ignition switch and key fobs on Magnums built May 23, 2007 to May 12, 2008. Recall 08V295 replaces rear axle hub nuts on 5,509 Magnums, Chargers and 300s.

There are two software recalls on the 2007 as well. 06V341 fixes powertrain software that might briefly lock the drive wheels, and 06V493 fixes anti-lock brake software that might lock up the rear brakes. Ex-police cars have one more: recall 08V583 for the column shifter cable.

Fix it or sell it?

Ask a shop to put the Magnum repair in writing, then see what a running Magnum from your year brings. If the quote comes close, selling the car as it sits is usually the better move.

  1. Run the VIN at NHTSA. With two DO NOT DRIVE air bag campaigns on every year, an open one matters. Our open recall guide explains what to ask.
  2. Air bags already deployed? Read airbags deployed.
  3. Slipping or no reverse? See bad transmission.
  4. Engine noise or no compression? See blown engine.

Selling a Magnum whole

  1. Note the VIN, mileage, engine, and rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where the Magnum sits and if the wheels turn. A long, heavy car with a seized wheel needs a different load-up, so mention it. We collect Magnums from driveways, streets and repair shops, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep it whole. Leave the wheels, converter and drivetrain in. Missing parts change the offer.
  5. What the driver needs: your ID and the signed title. Plate rules vary by state, and after you sell has each one.

Other Dodges: the Charger, Nitro and Durango, or every Dodge model.

Questions people ask

Which Magnum model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2005, the first year, with 638 of 1,163 as of October 10, 2026. The 2006 has 321. Later cars have had a shorter span on the road; the 2007 and 2008 show 110 and 93.
Which Magnum recalls say not to drive the car?
Two air bag campaigns: 15V313 for driver inflators and 16V352 for passenger inflators, both covering 2005-2008 Magnums. Both campaigns span more than four million Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Will you buy a Magnum with a dead engine or transmission?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us which wheels drive it, the rear two or all four, and if it can be pushed.
I have an ex-police Magnum. Is there a recall for it?
Recall 08V583 covers 2006-2009 Chargers and Magnums built with the police package and a column shifter. The gearshift cable can come loose from its bracket, and dealers add a second lock.
