Selling a damaged or dead F-150 Lightning

An F-150 Lightning with a damaged battery pack, flood or fire damage, or a crash repair the insurer won't cover can still be sold whole. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes electric pickups. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The Lightning is a small file: four model years, 242 complaints filed with NHTSA and 15 recall campaigns. Most of what matters to a seller is in the battery recalls and the warranty, both covered below.

Four model years, one plant

Ford built the first Lightning on April 18, 2022, and delivered the first one on May 26. Every truck came from the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Mich. It's a SuperCrew with a 5.5-foot bed, an aluminum body on a steel frame, and two motors for four-wheel drive. The 2022 battery packs held 98 kWh (standard range) or 131 kWh (extended range) of usable energy, built at Ford's Rawsonville plant. EPA rated the 2022 at 230 or 320 miles of range.

For 2025 Ford added a 123 kWh pack and a 536 hp tune between the 452 hp and 580 hp versions. Production ended in December 2025. In Ford's words, the current generation "has concluded" as workers moved to Dearborn Truck Plant to build more gas and hybrid F-150s after the Novelis fires. A next-generation Lightning is planned as an extended-range electric truck.

The battery recalls

Four campaigns deal with the high-voltage pack itself.

  • 25V131 (February 2025), 950 trucks, 2022-2024. A cell manufacturing defect "may result in an internal short circuit," which raises the risk of fire. Owners are told to charge to 80% at most until a dealer inspects the battery array and replaces it if needed, free of charge.
  • 23V168 (March 2023), 18 trucks, 2023. The pack could short when fully or nearly fully charged.
  • 24V144 (February 2024), 216 trucks, 2023. Busbar fasteners in the pack's junction box may be loose. NHTSA says "electrical arcing increases the risk of a fire," and drive power can be lost.
  • 25V272 (April 2025), 3 trucks, 2023. NHTSA says it "expands previous recall number 24V-144" to three more trucks with the same busbar fastener risk.

Electrical is the most-named complaint category on the 2023, at 43 of 112. NHTSA's complaints tool would not return this model by name, so we can't say how many of those describe the pack. The topics match; that's not proof.

Suspension, park and lighting recalls

The biggest campaigns by truck count are not about the battery.

Front ball joint nuts. On 11,922 trucks from 2023-2024 (24V949), the front upper control arm ball joint nut may not have been tightened, which can let the arm separate from the knuckle and cost the driver steering. In May 2025, 25V341 extended it to 29,501 trucks from 2024-2025.

Park that won't hold. Recall 25V863 (December 2025) covers 272,645 vehicles across the Lightning, Mustang Mach-E and Maverick. The integrated park module "may fail to lock into the park position," so the truck can roll away. The fix is a software update, sent over the air or done by a dealer.

Rear lightbar. Microcracks in the lens can let water in and make the reverse lights flicker or quit on 16,375 trucks from 2022-2023 (23V418). Then 25V731 called back 14,843 trucks that had already had the 23V418 repair. Exterior lighting leads the 2022's complaints, 29 of 92.

Smaller campaigns cover a tire pressure warning that may stay dark on trucks with 20- or 22-inch all-season tires (22V453), stability control that may not switch on at startup (23V801), a cabin heater module missing a solder joint (23V688), and a brake hose bracket on five 2025 trucks (25V438).

Lightning complaints and recalls, year by year

NHTSA counts as of October 10, 2026. "Median miles" is the halfway point of the odometer readings listed in the complaints. Top areas leave out "unknown or other".

Model yearComplaintsRecallsMedian milesTop complaint areas

2023112119,864Electrical 43, exterior lighting 20, power train 11
202430415,002Electrical 6, power train 5, service brakes 4
20258310,900Electrical 3, collision avoidance 2, service brakes 2

The recall column sums to 27 because several campaigns span more than one year; the truck has 15 in all. Of the 242 complaints, 21 report a crash and 4 a fire.

Warranty or sale?

Every Lightning is a 2022 or newer, so start with coverage. Ford's warranty page lists 8 years or 100,000 miles for hybrid and electric unique components on its new vehicles; the Lightning FAQ we read doesn't list battery terms, so read the warranty booklet that came with your truck. Then run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since a battery problem on a 2022-2024 may fall under 25V131.

What warranty won't cover is damage. A truck that sat in floodwater, burned, or took a hit to the pack is a different decision, and the repair estimate against the truck's value decides it. Our guides to flood-damaged and fire-damaged cars cover those cases.

Getting a Lightning picked up

  1. Have the VIN, the mileage, the battery size if you know it, and what happened.
  2. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us whether the truck powers on, whether it can be shifted to neutral, and where it sits now (garage, driveway, body shop, tow yard).
  4. Mention any water or fire exposure, and any warning lights about the high-voltage system.
  5. Have the title, or your lender's details if it's financed, and your ID at pickup.

Questions people ask

Which F-150 Lightnings are in the battery cell recall?
Recall 25V131, filed February 2025, covers 950 trucks from the 2022-2024 model years with a cell manufacturing defect that can cause an internal short and raise the risk of fire. Until the repair is done, owners are told to charge to no more than 80%. Dealers inspect the high-voltage battery array and replace it if needed, free of charge.
How many owners have complained to NHTSA about the Lightning?
242 as of October 10, 2026: 92 on the 2022, 112 on the 2023, 30 on the 2024 and 8 on the 2025. Electrical problems and exterior lighting are named most. The counts don't say which defect each owner had, so treat them as a direction, not a diagnosis.
Does Ford still build the F-150 Lightning?
Not this version. Production ran from April 2022 to December 2025 at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center. Ford says the current generation has concluded and that a next-generation Lightning will use an extended-range electric layout, built at the same plant.
Will you buy a Lightning with a damaged battery or one that won't power on?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and electric trucks count. Say plainly what happened, whether it powers on, and whether it has been in water or a fire. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
