Selling a wrecked or damaged Ford GT

A Ford GT that has been crashed, flooded or burned can still be sold as one whole car. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. With so few built, describe exactly what happened to it and what's still on the car.

Two different cars

2005-2006. Ford built 4,038 between June 2004 and September 2006, short of the 4,500 it had planned. Assembly was spread out. Each car began at Mayflower Vehicle Systems in Norwalk, Ohio, was painted at Saleen in Troy, Michigan, got its engine from Ford's Romeo plant, and was finished in the SVT building at Wixom, Michigan. Power came from a supercharged 5.4-liter aluminum V8 through a 6-speed Ricardo manual. Ford made 346 Heritage editions in a Gulf Oil-inspired livery.

2017-2022. Multimatic built the second generation in Markham, Ontario. The plan called for one car per day and 1,350 cars in all. It used a 647 hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and a Getrag 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Heritage editions followed, including a Gulf-liveried car in 2019-2020 and a Holman Moody edition in 2022. The Mk II and Mk IV were track-only cars; Ford says the Mk IV run totals 67.

Air bag inflators: the recalls to clear first

Every first-generation GT is tied up in the Takata inflator recalls. Three of them carry NHTSA's do-not-drive flag, with the same instruction: "Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed."

  • 14V787 (December 2014): a regional recall of 410 GTs sold or ever registered in high-humidity places such as Florida, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Ford's number is 14S28.
  • 15V319 (May 2015): the driver's inflator on 2005-2006 GTs and 2005-2014 Mustangs, 1,018,622 cars. Do not drive.
  • 16V384 (May 2016): the passenger inflator on the GT and other Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models, 1,892,343 vehicles. Do not drive.
  • 17V024 (January 2017): a later passenger-inflator campaign that the file also ties to the GT. Do not drive.
  • 21V081 (February 2021): replacement inflators fitted as service parts on the 2006 GT and other Fords may explode. Dealers inspect the module.

Ford's 19S01 bulletin, dated September 30, 2019, adds that "all 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles that were previously serviced under Safety Recall 14S28 must have this repair performed." A GT that already had one inflator job may still be open.

The rest of the recall file

The very first GT recall, 04V604, came in December 2004. Upper and lower control arms on 283 cars could have casting flaws and crack. Starting December 15, 2004, Ford phoned owners and asked them not to drive until the front and rear arms were replaced.

On the second generation, 18V707 (October 2018) covers 176 2017-2018 cars whose rear wing valve block may leak hydraulic fluid. The fix is a software update and, on some cars, a check valve, O-rings and a filter. Two 2017 cars repaired incorrectly under it came back as 25V443 in 2025.

Complaints by model year

The GT's NHTSA record is tiny: 15 complaints, 8 of them about air bags.

Selling a damaged GT

If the inflator recalls are open, don't drive it to a sale; let the truck come to it. Have the title in hand, and say whether an insurer has already declared it a total. Our wrecked car guide explains how a total loss is decided, and the salvage title guide covers a car that already carries the brand.

To get started, ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008. Tell us the model year, the mileage, what happened, and where the car is stored. Leave every part on it, the wheels and badges included.

Questions people ask

How many first-generation Ford GTs were built?
4,038, between June 2004 and September 2006. Ford had planned 4,500 and stopped short of that target.
Is my 2005-2006 GT under a do-not-drive warning?
It may be. The notices for 15V319 and 16V384 name the 2005-2006 GT, and both carry NHTSA's do-not-drive flag until the repair is done. NHTSA's recall file also puts the GT under a third flagged inflator campaign, 17V024, whose notice opens with other models. Ford's 19S01 bulletin also says every GT serviced under the older 14S28 recall still needs its repair. A Ford dealer can check the VIN.
Were there recalls on the 2017-2022 GT?
Two in the file. Recall 18V707 covers 176 2017-2018 cars whose rear wing valve block may leak hydraulic fluid, and 25V443 covers two 2017 cars that were repaired incorrectly under it.
Will you take a GT that has been in a fire, a flood or a crash?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Describe the damage, the title status and whether the car rolls when you ask for an offer.
