Selling a junk or non-running Geo Prizm
Air bags are named in more Geo Prizm complaints to NHTSA than any other part of the car: 136 of 562. All but two of those are on the 1993-1997 models.

Under the badge, the Prizm is a Toyota. Wikipedia says every one was built at NUMMI in Fremont, California, a GM and Toyota joint venture, right alongside the Corolla. If yours is done, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
What owners reported, generation by generation
Every Prizm count on this page is from the NHTSA complaint file we pulled on October 10, 2026. Each entry is one owner's account, and it doesn't rule on the car. Wikipedia says the Prizm carried the Geo name through the 1997 model year and became a Chevrolet for 1998.
1989-1992 (E90): structure and engine
The first Prizm shared the E90 Corolla's platform. Wikipedia lists a 1.6-liter 4A-FE or 4A-GE engine, a 5-speed manual, and 3-speed and 4-speed automatics. Wikipedia classes the 1989-1992 Prizm as a subcompact.
NHTSA holds 133 complaints on the 1990-1992 cars. Structure is named most on the 1991 (12 of 46) and 1992 (15 of 50), with engine and engine cooling next on both (9 and 11). Air bags don't make the top three on any of these years.
One recall touches this generation. On the 1991, campaign 90V191000 found lug nuts holding the wheels and wheel covers may have been tightened below spec. Dealers torqued them and fitted wheel covers held by spring clips. It covered 654 vehicles.
1993-1997 (E100): the air bag years
The second Prizm moved to the E100 Corolla platform, and Wikipedia classes the 1993-on cars as compacts. Wikipedia lists a 1.6-liter 4A-FE or a 1.8-liter 7A-FE, with a 5-speed manual, a 3-speed automatic or a 4-speed automatic.
These five years hold 418 complaints, and air bags lead every one: 26 on the 1993, 48 on the 1994, 26 on the 1995, 19 on the 1996 and 15 on the 1997. Seat belts come second on every year, from 9 to 20. The 1994 is the peak year at 134 complaints, and it is the only Prizm year with deaths in the file (2).
Three recalls land here:
- Air bag sensor (96V107000), 1993-1995. Liquid spilled in the console box area can light the air bag warning lamp and keep it lit while driving. Dealers fitted a shield over the sensor. The 627,858 total is the entire campaign, and Prizms may be just a share of it.
- Battery (95V195002), 1995. A bad weld inside a battery terminal can let the connection separate. Dealers replaced the battery. 4,481 vehicles.
- Air bag computer (97V043002), 1997. A mechanical shock to the computer soon after the engine starts, such as slamming the front seatback against its stops or a sudden parking brake release, is the trigger NHTSA describes. Dealers repaired the computer. Not all of that campaign's 17,094 vehicles need be Prizms.
The file also has 11 complaints listed as 1998 Geo Prizm, the year the car became the Chevrolet Prizm.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Prizm figures as of NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file. If a Prizm campaign covers more than one year, we count it once in each of those years.
| Model year | Complaints | Air bags named | Report a crash | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1990 | 37 | under top 3 | 5 | 0 |
| 1991 | 46 | under top 3 | 3 | 1 |
| 1992 | 50 | under top 3 | 4 | 0 |
| 1993 | 77 | 26 | 21 | 1 |
| 1994 | 134 | 48 | 39 | 1 |
| 1995 | 96 | 26 | 27 | 2 |
| 1996 | 61 | 19 | 22 | 0 |
| 1997 | 50 | 15 | 13 | 1 |
| 1998 | 11 | 2 | 1 | 0 |
Totals: 562 complaints, 135 reporting a crash, 129 people injured, 18 fire reports.
Repair it, or let it go?
The car in the photo shows how far some owners go to keep a Prizm on the road, with tape over a rusted fender. Some things to check:
- Air bag light on? Enter the Prizm's VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 1993-1995 car, campaign 96V107000 is the one tied to that light.
- Bags already went off? See airbags deployed before you price a repair.
- Rust through the fenders or rockers? Failed inspection or rust covers when it stops being worth patching.
- Burning oil or won't start? The burning oil and car doesn't run guides help sort it out.
When the Prizm needs more than it would be worth fixed, sell it as it is. What a junk car is worth shows what changes the number.
How to sell the Prizm whole
- Note your Prizm's VIN, its miles, what's wrong with it, and whether it can roll and steer.
- Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot: street, driveway, behind a garage. Note flat tires or a locked wheel so the truck comes ready to load it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it whole. Leave the engine, battery, seats and wheels on. Tell us about anything already pulled.
- When the Prizm is picked up, give the driver the signed title plus any keys, and bring ID. After you sell covers plates and insurance by state.
No title? Start with selling with no title. More Geos: Metro, Storm, Tracker, or every Geo model.
Questions people ask
- Is a Geo Prizm really a Toyota Corolla?
- Mechanically, close to it. Wikipedia says every Prizm was built at NUMMI in Fremont, California, alongside the Corolla, on Toyota's E90 and E100 platforms.
- Which Prizm years have the most air bag complaints?
- The 1993-1997 cars. NHTSA's Prizm file, counted October 10, 2026, has 136 air bag complaints, and only two fall outside those years. The 1994 alone has 48.
- Do you buy a Prizm with rust holes and a dead engine?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Describe the Prizm's spot and say if it can roll onto a truck.
