The Storm was an Isuzu, built at Fujisawa in Japan, and it lasted four model years. Wikipedia says it ended when Isuzu stopped building passenger cars in 1993. If yours has quit, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
One generation, four years
Wikipedia lists three engines, all fours: a 1.6-liter SOHC, a 1.6-liter DOHC and a 1.8-liter DOHC. Transmissions were a 5-speed manual, a Mazda 3-speed automatic or a Jatco 4-speed automatic. EPA classes every year as a subcompact. The Storm replaced the Geo Spectrum and had no successor.
Storm owners filed each complaint counted here; our numbers come from NHTSA's file dated October 10, 2026. They describe what drivers ran into and don't grade the car.
Electrical, engine cooling and speed control
Electrical complaints run 8 on the 1990, 17 on the 1991, 21 on the 1992 and 16 on the 1993. On the 1992 and 1993 it is the top component; on the 1991 it is second only to engine and engine cooling (19).
Storm engine and cooling complaints total 50: 19 on the 1991, 14 on the 1993 and 12 on the 1992. If yours runs hot, the head gasket guide covers what to weigh.
Vehicle speed control shows up in 31 complaints, fourth overall. It never makes the top three for a single year, so those complaints are spread across the run.
Air bags and steering
Air bags are named 41 times: 10 on the 1990, 14 on the 1991, 12 on the 1992 and 5 on the 1993. Steering adds 19, with 6 on the 1990.
One Storm recall also concerns the steering wheel. Campaign 92V091001, filed under air bags, covers 1990-1992 cars whose steering wheel center hub can fracture in certain frontal or near-frontal crashes. The Storm fix was a reinforcing plate plus a nut fitted at the wheel's hub. That campaign counts 211,306 vehicles in total, and other models may be among them.
The 1990's three recalls
The 1990 is the only Storm year under all three campaigns.
- Seatback hinge (89V203000), 1990. When you tip a front seatback forward to reach the back seat, a finger can go into the hinge. Dealers repaired it to stop that. 15,200 vehicles.
- Seat belt buckles (95V103007), 1990-1991. In a 1990 or 1991 Storm, a "PRESS" button on a front belt can crack apart and foul the buckle. NHTSA lists the same campaign for the Geo Metro and Geo Tracker, so its 466,902 vehicles are far from all Storms.
- Steering wheel hub (92V091001), above.

Keep it or sell it?
Tracking down an electrical fault on an aging Storm can drag on for a long while. Some questions to settle first:
- Open recalls? Type the Storm's VIN into NHTSA's recall page.
- Dead dash, no crank, or lights that come and go? Electrical problems covers what that can mean.
- Running hot or losing coolant? See the head gasket guide before you commit to a repair.
- Been parked for years? Car sitting for years lists what goes bad.
If the repair list is bigger than what a running Storm is worth to you, sell it whole. What a junk car is worth shows what goes into an offer.
How to sell a Storm whole
- Jot down the Storm's VIN, odometer reading, what's wrong, and if the wheels turn.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it's parked: garage, side yard, street, storage lot. If a tire is flat, say so; it changes how the truck loads the Storm. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave the parts on. Wheels, engine, seats and glass stay with the car; flag anything already removed.
- When the driver comes for the Storm, have its title ready and show ID. After you sell covers plates and insurance.
Missing the title? Start at selling with no title. Other Geos: Spectrum, Metro, Prizm, Tracker, or all Geo models.
Questions people ask
- What do Geo Storm owners complain about most?
- The electrical system. It shows up in 62 of the Storm's 268 NHTSA complaints, counted October 10, 2026. Engine and engine cooling (50), air bags (41) and vehicle speed control (31) come next.
- Why did the Geo Storm end after 1993?
- Isuzu built it. Wikipedia says Isuzu stopped building passenger cars in 1993 after the crash of Japan's bubble economy, and the Storm ended with them. It had no successor.
- Can I sell a Storm that has no title and doesn't run?
- In many cases. Every state sets its own rules here, and our no-title guide goes over each one. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
