Selling a dead or rusted Geo Tracker
Three of the Geo Tracker's five recall campaigns come down to a bad weld: one in the lower steering shaft, one in the rear axle housing tubes, and one in the steering wheel hub. Two of the three hit only the 1994 model year.

A Tracker is a Suzuki under the Geo badge. Wikipedia calls it the almost identical twin of the Suzuki Sidekick, built at CAMI in Ingersoll, Ontario, with some made in Japan. If yours is rusted out or won't run, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
The weld recalls, and what else owners reported
Tracker owners sent NHTSA the complaints counted below; our tally is from its file dated October 10, 2026. They tell you what people saw, not how your own Tracker will hold up.
Every Geo Tracker is first generation. Wikipedia lists a 1.6-liter G16 four and a 5-speed manual. EPA's data shows two-door convertibles, hardtops and "van" versions in two- and four-wheel drive. Wikipedia says the two-door hardtop was dropped in 1995 to make room for a four-door hardtop wagon the next year, and the Tracker became a Chevrolet for 1998.
1989-1992: seat belts lead
The early years are small in the file: 72 complaints across four years. Seat belts are named most on the 1989 (6 of 10), 1990 (11 of 25) and tied with structure and electrical on the 1991 (3 each). That lines up with campaign 95V103007: on 1989-1991 Trackers, a front buckle's red release button, printed "PRESS," may crack, and its fragments can keep the latch from releasing properly. That 466,902 count spans the full campaign, which NHTSA also lists under the Geo Metro and Geo Storm.
The 1992 has 19 complaints and 3 deaths in the file, with tires named most (4).
1993-1994: the weld years
The 1994 has three recall campaigns, more than any other Tracker year.
- Rear axle housing (94V073001), 1993-1994. The housing tubes on both sides were welded wrong and can crack. A cracked housing can let the wheel come off and break the brake line. Dealers checked each Tracker's axle welds and put in a complete new rear axle where needed. 34,172 vehicles, a total that may reach past the Tracker.
- Lower steering shaft (94V016000), 1994. A misplaced weld can let the shaft separate. Dealers inspected it and replaced it if needed. 2,502 vehicles.
- Steering wheel hub (96V118000), 1994. The weld from the center hub to the spokes can crack. Dealers checked the wheel's lot date code and replaced suspect ones. 965 vehicles.
Structure is the component named most on the 1994 (18 of 48). The 1993 has 24 complaints but reports 15 people injured.
1995-1997: structure, engine and the fuel tank
The 1995 and 1996 hold the most complaints, 64 and 71. Structure leads on the 1995 (19), and that year has 7 fire reports, the most of any Tracker year. On the 1996 Tracker, owners point to the engine and its cooling 19 times, then air bags 9 times.
- Fuel tank (96V121001), 1996. In a rear-end crash, a reinforcement on the tank's mounting flange can puncture the tank, which does not meet federal standard FMVSS 301. The remedy: dealers install two new shield gussets between the fuel tank and its attachment brackets. 18,121 vehicles in all, possibly counting other models.
Wikipedia cites a later IIHS study: two-door Trackers had a slightly below-average injury rate, while four-door models did better than average for utility vehicles.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Our Tracker numbers line up with NHTSA as of October 10, 2026. A recall covering several Tracker years shows up under every one of them.
| Year | Complaints | Crash reports | Fire reports | Deaths | Recall campaigns | Named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1989 | 10 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | Seat belts |
| 1990 | 25 | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | Seat belts |
| 1991 | 18 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | Seat belts, structure, electrical |
| 1992 | 19 | 3 | 1 | 3 | 0 | Tires |
| 1993 | 24 | 4 | 2 | 1 | 1 | Power train, structure |
| 1994 | 48 | 9 | 3 | 0 | 3 | Structure |
| 1995 | 64 | 6 | 7 | 1 | 0 | Structure |
| 1996 | 71 | 15 | 1 | 0 | 1 | Engine and cooling |
| 1997 | 25 | 5 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Air bags |
| 1998 | 18 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | Suspension, speed control, visibility |
The 1998 rows are listed under Geo Tracker in NHTSA's file, though Wikipedia says that year was sold as a Chevrolet.
Fix the Tracker or sell it?
On a Tracker, structure tops the complaint list. Before you spend on one:
- Look for open campaigns by putting the Tracker's VIN into NHTSA's recall search, especially on a 1993-1994 with the axle and steering recalls.
- Frame or body rotted? Read rotted frame and frame damage first.
- Overheating on a 1996? Engine and cooling complaints peak that year. The head gasket guide explains the warning signs.
- Clutch slipping? See worn-out clutch.
If what it needs is worth more than the Tracker running, sell it whole. What a junk car is worth explains what changes an offer.
Selling it whole
- Write down the Tracker's VIN, its miles, what's broken, and whether it moves in 2WD.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it sits: a field, a barn, a driveway, a trailhead lot. Mention a missing top or doors and whether the wheels turn. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Don't strip it. Leave the soft top, wheels and transfer case on, and say what's already gone.
- Once the tow truck pulls up, hand over the Tracker's title and show ID. Each state sets its own plate rules; see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- What were the Geo Tracker recalls?
- Five campaigns: a lower steering shaft weld (1994), rear axle housing welds (1993-1994), a steering wheel hub weld (1994), front seat belt buckle buttons (1989-1991), and a fuel tank that could be punctured in a rear-end crash (1996). A Tracker's VIN can be checked on NHTSA's recall page.
- Which Tracker year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1996 Tracker, with 71 in the file NHTSA held on October 10, 2026. Nineteen of them point to the Tracker's engine and cooling system, the most for any single part.
- Will you take a Tracker with a rotted frame or a seized 4x4 system?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention whether the Tracker rolls and whether its soft top or doors are gone.
