Selling a junk car in Newnan
Newnan gives a junked car a 90-day runway, then takes a harder line. Section 10-34 bans "unsheltered storage" of old, stripped, wrecked or junked automobiles "for a period of 90 days or more within the city." After notice, the city can haul the car off. If nobody claims it within 60 days of removal, the city can sell it.

How Section 10-34 plays out
- Who answers for it: the owner, tenants, lessees, operators, managers and occupants, "jointly and severally." A renter and a landlord can both be named.
- What counts as fixed: moving the car "into completely enclosed buildings authorized to be used for such storage purposes," or out of the city limits. A tarp is not a building.
- If it stays: each of them faces the penalties in Section 1-14, or contempt of the municipal court.
- After notice: the city may move the car "to a location of its selection" and charge the expense to the people responsible. Then: "Such unused personalty may be sold by the city if no claim is made therefor within 60 days after its removal."
When a dead car becomes a lien
Section 10-32 is the second tool. It declares the "presence of any rubbish, trash, refuse, litter, unsightly materials or abandoned vehicles" on a property a nuisance, and it has the chief of police serve notice demanding abatement. If the city removes an abandoned vehicle, the charges "shall be a lien upon the premise."
The clerk records a statement and mails notice of the lien to the owner. But the code says a failure to mail it, or to receive it, does not stop foreclosure. Property under that lien "shall be sold under execution for nonpayment." Put plainly, a car nobody wanted can end up as a claim against the house it sat behind.
Trailers and towing on Newnan streets
Thinking of hauling the car home on a trailer and leaving it at the curb? Section 20-129 limits a truck and trailer, or a trailer over 26 feet, to "more than one hour at a time in any one place" in the first fire district. Outside that district the limit is 12 hours, and no overnight parking. Section 20-133 separately lets the police chief tow and store illegally parked vehicles, subject to state law.
The Coweta County tag office
One Coweta tag office we checked is at 87 Newnan Station Drive, 770-254-2670. That puts it roughly 3 miles northeast of central Newnan as the crow flies, and Coweta may operate additional sites.
A Newnan sale has two parts: your signature on the title's back, then a cancelled registration. Your buyer gets 7 days from the purchase date to take care of title and registration at a County Tag Office. If the car was totaled, owners and insurers must surrender the plates of vehicles that become salvage or total-loss. See wrecked or totaled.
Coweta also falls inside the state's emissions testing area.
Your plate stays home
Take the plate off. It is yours to keep. End the registration first, either on the DRIVES e-Services site or with an MV-18J at a Coweta County tag office, and only then call the insurer, as the Department of Revenue advises. After you sell lists the remaining steps, and Georgia has the statewide rules.
