The truck in the photo is an early full-size K5 Jimmy, the line Wikipedia names as the Yukon's predecessor. This page covers the Jimmy years in EPA's data, 1984 to 2004. EPA's list mixes names like K15 Jimmy and V1500 with S15 Jimmy rows. The generations below follow Wikipedia's GMC Jimmy article, which covers the compact Jimmy.
Jimmy complaints and recalls, year by year
These are complaints, not a reliability score. One campaign can name a whole run of years, and other GM trucks too; add up the right-hand column and you'd overshoot 23. NHTSA's file holds no complaints under 2002.

First generation, through 1994
Wikipedia lists the two-door from 1982 and a four-door from 1991, built in Shreveport, Louisiana, Pontiac, Michigan and Moraine, Ohio. Early four-cylinder engines and the 2.2-liter diesel were dropped after 1984 for the 2.5-liter Iron Duke. The 2.8-liter V6 went after 1989, which left the 4.3-liter V6 as the only engine. The 1994 carried over almost unchanged, with a third brake light added.
The brake complaints start here. From 1991 to 1994 they add up to 570, and they lead every one of those years. Recall 99V193000 repairs the 4-wheel/2-wheel drive switch on 4WD trucks with antilock brakes made between September 1989 and August 1996. Two smaller campaigns sit in these years too: 91V108000 replaced fuel tank sender seals shipped out of position on 1991s, and 94V093000 covered 1993 transmissions where clutch wear could keep Park from engaging.
Second generation, 1995-2004
The second Jimmy kept the 4.3-liter Vortec V6 and a 4-speed 4L60-E automatic. Linden, New Jersey became the main plant; Moraine built only four-doors.
No Jimmy year tops the 1995, which leads with 499 complaints and 75 crash reports. Brakes still lead on the 1995 and 1996, with 368 complaints between them. Visibility follows; the 1998 has it on top with 70. Recall 95V180000 replaced 1995 cooling fans whose blade rivets could break. Recall 96V234000 added fuel tank shielding to 1995-1996 four-door 4WD and AWD models, after the prop shaft hit the tank in testing.
Suspension leads on the 1997, 1999 and 2000. Under recall 01V200000, dealers fitted two new upper ball joints to 1996-1997 SUVs sold or registered in certain states. Recall 01V364000 replaced a hazard switch part on 2000-2001 SUVs that could leave the stop lamps dead.
Selling a Jimmy whole
- Know what you have: VIN, mileage, two-door or four-door, 2WD or 4WD. On older trucks, the title matters more than the miles.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe where it sits. Barn, field, backyard or driveway all work. Tell us about flat tires or wheels that won't turn.
- Leave it whole, V6, converter and wheels included. If parts are already gone, say which.
- Expect the driver to check your ID and take the title. Lost title? See selling with no title.
Is it worth fixing?
The newest Jimmy is a 2004. A repair that makes sense on a newer SUV rarely does here.
- Brakes soft or pulling? That's the Jimmy's most common complaint. The bad brakes guide covers what to check before you spend.
- Sitting for years? Read car sitting for years before you buy a battery.
- Rusted underneath? The rotted frame guide explains when it's past saving.
- Just old and tired? See old or high mileage.
Other older GMCs: the S-15 pickup, the Envoy that replaced the Jimmy, the Yukon, or every GMC we cover.
Questions people ask
- Which Jimmy model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1995, with 499 as of October 10, 2026. Then the 1996 (407), the 1994 (334) and the 1997 (274). The years before 1991 have very few, 65 complaints across 1984 to 1990.
- What recall covered the Jimmy's ABS?
- Recall 99V193000 covers certain 1991-1996 four-wheel-drive trucks with antilock brakes, made between September 1989 and August 1996. Dealers repair or replace the 4-wheel/2-wheel drive switch. The 1,125,749 vehicles in that campaign include other GM trucks, not only Jimmys.
- Do you buy an older full-size K5 Jimmy like the one in the photo?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars of any age, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits.
- My Jimmy has sat for years. Can I still sell it?
- Yes. Flat tires, a dead battery and a seized engine are all fine. Tell us how long it's sat and whether the wheels turn. Our guide to a car sitting for years covers the rest.
