Selling a junk or non-running GMC Sierra 1500

Every Sierra 1500 model year from 2019 through 2026 has the engine as the component owners name most in their complaints to NHTSA. Across those eight years that comes to 1,436 engine complaints out of 3,439. Before 2019, the engine never led a single year.

So if your newer Sierra has engine trouble, it is in crowded company. If it's an older truck with brake, air bag or wiring problems that outrun its value, the same answer works: sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Complaint patterns across the Sierra 1500's years

Each Sierra 1500 number below counts complaints from NHTSA's flat file, which we downloaded October 10, 2026. They show what owners reported, not a reliability score. A recent Sierra 1500 hasn't been owned long, so its small counts say less than they seem to. The groups follow what the complaints say rather than redesign years.

1999-2002: brake lines and hydraulics

These four years hold 2,214 complaints, and 878 of them fall under hydraulic service brakes. The 1999 alone has 758 complaints, 60 of which report a crash, the most crash reports of any Sierra 1500 year.

Two recalls touch the brakes. Recall 00V345000 covers 1999-2000 trucks whose front right brake pipe could wear against the body cross sill; dealers inspect it and replace the worn section. Recall 05V379000 targets 1999-2002 trucks whose antilock brakes can kick in when they shouldn't, a problem more common in salted, corrosive regions; the dealer fix cleans the surface under each wheel speed sensor and coats it against rust. Both campaigns include other GM pickups and SUVs, so their 1,383,922 and 1,353,718 vehicles are not all Sierras. Tailgate cables that can corrode and break are covered by 06V066000 (1999-2000) and 04V129000 (2000-2004).

2003-2006: the wiring complaints arrive

Electrical system complaints lead the 2004 and 2005 and total 278 across 2003-2006, out of 1,300 complaints in all. Service brakes lead the 2003 and 2006 and rank second on the 2004 and 2005. Recall 05V163000 changes the rear center seat belt routing on 2003-2005 crew cabs.

2007-2013: passenger air bags

Air bags top the list every year from 2007 to 2013: 860 of 1,961 complaints. Three campaigns filed in 2021 swap in an alternate front passenger inflator at no charge: 21V050000 (2007-2011), 21V053000 (2009-2013) and 21V054000 (2010-2013). Two electrical recalls land here too. Recall 08V441000 fits 2007-2008 trucks with a fused replacement harness, and 10V240000 disables and removes the heated washer fluid module on 2007-2009.

GMC shares platforms with Chevrolet, per Wikipedia, which is why these campaigns also name the Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban, and why their vehicle counts run into the millions.

2014-2018: headlights, brakes, then the drivetrain

At 855 complaints, the 2014 Sierra 1500 tops every year, and exterior lighting leads them with 184. It also has 20 recall campaigns, more than any other year. Service brake complaints add up to 602 across 2014-2018, and power train complaints run 84 on the 2015, 69 on the 2016 and 119 on the 2017.

On 2014-2018 trucks, recall 19V645000 has dealers reprogram the electronic brake control module, since the pump that supplies brake-assist vacuum may fall short. Recall 18V586000 updates steering software on the 2015 after momentary loss of power steering assist. Recall 16V209000 fixes a seat belt tensioner cable on 2014-2015, and NHTSA lists 16V651000, a seat belt pretensioner campaign whose remedy reflashes the sensing module (SDM) software, against 2014-2017 trucks; its defect notice names the Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD rather than the 1500, and its 3,640,162 vehicles span several GM models, so a VIN lookup is the way to tell if a given 1500 is covered. Two small campaigns carry do-not-drive warnings: 14V246000 (inner tie rods, 2014, 477 vehicles) and 16V256000 (front upper control arms, 2016, 3,738 vehicles).

2019-2026: the engine years

The 2019 has 676 complaints, and 275 name the engine. The 2021 and 2022 follow with 264 and 212. On the 2022 and 2023, structure is the second complaint at 96 and 83. Recall 22V903000 updates body control module software on 2022-2023 trucks, at a dealer or over the air. Recall 26V289000 puts a do-not-drive warning on certain 2026 four-wheel and all-wheel drive trucks until the transfer case is checked and, if needed, replaced; that campaign is 66 vehicles across several GM models.

Worth fixing, or time to sell?

First, check the truck's VIN against NHTSA's recall database. The air bag inflator, power steering and brake vacuum pump recalls above list free dealer remedies, and an open recall is worth settling before you price anything.

Next, line up the shop's written estimate against what a running Sierra like yours fetches. If the repair bill eats up most of that number, selling the truck in its current shape usually makes more sense.

Selling the whole Sierra

  1. Before you reach out on your Sierra, note the VIN, mileage, cab and bed size, 2WD or 4WD, and the problem.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it's parked. Driveway, field, garage or a repair shop lot. Say if your Sierra rolls, steers and holds air so we bring a truck that loads it.
  4. Leave it together. The tailgate, wheels and catalytic converters stay on. Say which parts, if any, came off earlier, since that moves the offer.
  5. When the tow truck arrives, the Sierra's title, its keys and your license go to the driver. Plate handling varies from state to state; after you sell covers them. No title? Start with selling with no title.

Questions people ask

Which Sierra 1500 years draw the most complaints to NHTSA?
At the top is the 2014, with 855 complaints in the NHTSA data from October 10, 2026. After it come the 2015 (794), the 1999 (758), the 2019 (676) and the 2000 (624). The 2025 (118) and 2026 (138) Sierras sit low in part because their owners have had so little time to report problems.
Why do Sierra recalls also name the Silverado and Tahoe?
GMC shares platforms with Chevrolet, so one GM campaign often covers several trucks and SUVs. That is also why the vehicle counts run into the millions: 21V050000 covers 2,641,272 vehicles across many models, not that many Sierras.
Will you buy a Sierra 1500 with a dead engine?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes pickups that won't start. Pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us whether the truck rolls, whether it's 4WD, and where it's parked.
Should I pull the tailgate, wheels or engine parts before selling?
No. Sell the whole car as it sits. Anything already unbolted counts against the offer, so mention missing pieces when you reach out.
