Selling a dead or worn-out GMC Sierra 2500HD

Five model years, 2001 through 2005, account for 734 of the Sierra 2500HD's 1,847 NHTSA complaints from owners. The 2003 tops every year at 176, yet NHTSA lists zero recall campaigns for it.

Those counts also take in the 2001-2007 Sierra 1500 HD, which NHTSA files under the 2500 names because it shares the 2500HD platform. If yours is one of those trucks, or a newer one with a transmission or electrical problem that costs more than it's worth, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Complaints and recall campaigns, year by year

Taken from the NHTSA complaint download of October 10, 2026. Each row counts what owners reported; it is not a reliability score, and a truck built for 2025 or 2026 has had only months for its owners to file. Many campaigns reach across more than one year, so the recall figures sum past 49.

What the complaints and recalls point to

1999-2006: brakes, then wiring

These eight years carry 884 complaints. Hydraulic brakes lead every year from 1999 to 2003, with 199 complaints across 1999-2005. From the 2003, electrical complaints climb, leading the 2004 and 2005 and totaling 121 over 2003-2005. Few recall campaigns cover these years, between none and two per year.

2007-2014: the passenger air bag inflator

Air bag complaints run to 134 of the 357 filed on these years, most of them on the 2007 (47) and 2008 (39). Recall 15V324000 replaces the front passenger air bag inflator on 2007-2008 Sierra and Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD trucks, a campaign of 330,198 vehicles. Five 2021 campaigns do the same with an alternate inflator, free of charge: 21V052000 (2009), 21V050000 (2009-2011), 21V053000 (2009-2013), 21V051000 (2012) and 21V054000 (2010-2014). Each covers many GM trucks and SUVs, so none of their totals is a Sierra count.

2015-2019: one busy year, then the Duramax heater

No 2500HD year carries more recall campaigns than the 2015, with 11, and its 94 complaints are led by exterior lighting. Recall 14V339000 checks power steering hose clamps on 2015 trucks. On 2015-2016 trucks, 16V069000 adds adhesive to the pivot nut on the brake pedal and torques it tighter. Recall 21V504000 replaces the roof-rail air bag modules on 2015-2016, and 16V651000, a seat belt pretensioner recall, reflashes the sensing module (SDM) software on 2015-2017.

On 2017-2019 trucks with the 6.6-liter Duramax diesel, recalls 19V328000 and 21V496000 replace the engine block heater and its cord. Across 2015-2019 owners filed 257 complaints.

2020-2026: transmission and tailgate

Power train complaints lead the 2020, 2021 and 2023 and add up to 79 across 2020-2024, out of 349 complaints on 2020-2026 trucks. Recall 24V797000 installs new transmission control module software on 2020-2022 trucks, and GM paired it with a special coverage program; the campaign of 463,295 vehicles includes the Sierra 1500, Silverado, Tahoe and others.

Power tailgates have their own pair: 24V060000 (2020-2024) and 24V894000 (2024) replace the touchpad switch, which may short circuit. Recall 21V758000 tells owners of 3,241 trucks from 2021-2022 to park outside until the brake modulator assembly is replaced. Seat belt hardware is covered by 19V814000 (2020) and 20V792000 (2020-2021).

How a whole 2500HD gets sold

  1. Note the details: VIN, mileage, cab style, gas or diesel, 2WD or 4WD, and what's wrong.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the spot. Gravel drive, back pasture, shop lot or garage. Say whether it rolls and steers, and if it has a plow mount or a fifth-wheel hitch, so the right truck shows up for a heavy pickup.
  4. Don't strip it. Leave the HD with its wheels, tailgate and converter attached. Tell us about any part pulled before you called, because it affects the offer.
  5. On pickup day, keep the title, a license and every key you can find within reach. Plates follow state law, which after you sell lays out. Missing title? See selling with no title.

Repair it, or let it go?

Before spending a dollar, enter the VIN on NHTSA's recall page. The air bag and transmission software remedies above are free dealer work, and an open recall is worth closing first.

After that it's arithmetic: the written quote against what the same truck brings running.

Other GMC pickups: the Sierra 1500, Sierra 3500HD and Canyon, or all of GMC.

Questions people ask

Do the Sierra 2500HD numbers include the Sierra 1500 HD?
Yes. NHTSA files the 2001-2007 Sierra 1500 HD, a truck on the 2500HD platform, under the 2500 names, so its complaints are counted on this page and not with the regular Sierra 1500.
Which Sierra 2500HD years have the most complaints?
The 2003, with 176 in the October 10, 2026 count. The 2004 (146), the 2001 and 2002 (143 each) and the 2005 (126) come next. The 2024 already shows 106; recent trucks have had only a short time for owners to file, so that number stands out.
Is there a recall on the Duramax block heater?
Two. Recall 19V328000 and recall 21V496000 cover 2017-2019 Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks with the 6.6-liter Duramax diesel; dealers replace the engine block heater and, in the second campaign, the heater cord. Both campaigns include Chevrolet Silverado trucks, so their vehicle counts are not Sierra-only.
Will you take a heavy-duty Sierra that doesn't run?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and a 2500HD is no exception. Pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us whether it rolls, whether the wheels turn, and what stands between the street and the truck.
