Selling a broken or junk Honda CR-V

A CR-V with a dead engine, a rear frame eaten by road salt or a dash full of warning lights can still be sold. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Nothing has to be fixed or pulled off first.

Before you sell, look at two Honda programs that could pay for the repair instead. Honda now covers head gaskets on turbo CR-Vs from 2017-2026 and hybrids from 2020-2026 for 10 years or 150,000 miles, though a 2017 turbo is covered only to May 31, 2027. A 2007-2011 CR-V from a salt-belt state falls under a frame recall that can end with Honda buying it back.

Six generations, six different weak spots

We counted these from NHTSA's own data files, downloaded on October 10, 2026. Each complaint was filed with NHTSA by an owner and is tied to one model year.

2002-2006: a window switch that can burn

The driver's master window switch is the part to know on these years. Recall 12V-486 covered 268,655 of them in 2012. The switch can fail or melt, and a melting switch can smoke and catch fire even with the car turned off, so owners were told to park outside until it was replaced. In December 2020, recall 20V-768 returned to the same cars: moisture can get into the switch, so dealers replace it and inspect the harness.

Complaints on these five years report 115 fires, more than any other CR-V generation. Low-beam headlight wiring is the other electrical recall here: on 2002-2004 cars its terminals can melt (12V-136).

2007-2011: look under the back

Recall 23V-228 is the one a seller in a snowy state should read. It reaches 616,128 CR-Vs from 2007-2011 with a sale or registration history in 22 states plus Washington, D.C., including Ohio, New York, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Salt, mud and water collect inside the rear frame and rust it from the inside out. If it goes far enough, a rear trailing arm can come loose and the driver can lose control.

What the dealer does depends on the damage. If the trailing arm bolt still comes out, they fit a support brace; if not, they repair the frame. When the rust is too far gone, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Get that answer before a rusty CR-V goes for scrap.

These years also had recall 11V-395. On 2007-2010 cars the outer race of a transmission shaft bearing can break, and the free fix is new transmission control software.

2017-2022: the turbo years

The first turbo CR-V drew the most complaints: 1,773 on the 2017 and 2,155 on the 2018, with the engine named most both years. In October 2018 Honda sent dealers a product update for 2017-2018 1.5-liter cars in Maine, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. On very short trips in that cold, the engine oil can become diluted. The oil level rises, and the engine can misfire (P0300-P0304) or set a too-rich code (P0172).

Honda then stretched coverage on camshafts and rocker arms to 6 years with no mileage cap, up from 5 years or 60,000 miles. The April 2024 version of that bulletin also lists spark plugs damaged by the problem. Six years have now passed on almost every one of these cars.

The newer program reaches much further. Head gasket coverage on 1.5-turbo CR-Vs from 2017-2026 and on 2020-2026 Hybrids now lasts until the car is 10 years past its first sale or shows 150,000 miles. The exception is the 2017 turbo, whose own bulletin expires May 31, 2027. Honda lists overheating, coolant loss and misfire codes as signs. Honda planned to start mailing owners about it in early October 2026. Two more programs touch this generation: the A/C compressor shaft seal is covered for 10 years with no mileage limit on 2017-2022 cars, and recalls 21V-215 and 23V-858 replace fuel pumps on 2018-2020 models whose impellers can deform, so the engine may stall or refuse to start.

2023 and newer: steering that fights back

The 2023 has 631 complaints, and 378 of them name the steering. Recall 24V-744 says the steering gearbox on 2023-2025 CR-Vs may have been put together wrong, leaving extra friction inside that makes the wheel hard to turn. The free fix is a new worm gear spring, with grease added or moved to where it belongs. The hybrids carry their own recalls: cracks in the high-pressure fuel pump that let gasoline escape (24V-763), and battery modules on 98 of the 2023 Hybrids that can spark and cut drive power (24V-745).

Complaints and recalls for each model year

Complaints are those filed with NHTSA for that model year. Recalls are campaigns NHTSA lists for the year; one campaign often spans several years, so the column adds up to far more than 72. Complaints NHTSA could not pin on a part, its "unknown or other" tag, are skipped in the third column.

Repair it, or sell it?

Weigh the repair quote against what the CR-V would sell for once it runs. When the quote gets close to that figure, selling it as it sits usually wins. Settle these first:

  1. Open recalls. Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Recall work costs you nothing, and on a 2007-2011 with frame rot it may end in a buyback.
  2. Overheating on a 2017 or newer? Ask a Honda dealer whether the head gasket extension covers your VIN before paying anyone.
  3. Rust outside the recall. A rotted frame can fail a state inspection on any year. Our failed inspection guide covers the rules state by state.
  4. A worn-out engine. If the misfires or noise are past any coverage, see blown engine for how to weigh it, and what a junk car is worth for what shapes an offer.

Selling your CR-V as it sits

  1. Write down the VIN, the mileage and what the CR-V does or won't do.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it's parked, in a driveway, on the street or at a shop, and whether it rolls and steers. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave everything on it, from the catalytic converter to the wheels and, on a Hybrid, the battery pack. Parts already taken off change the offer, so mention them.
  5. Keep the title and your ID handy for pickup day. Plate rules depend on your state; see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which CR-V model years have the most complaints?
The 2018 leads with 2,155 complaints filed with NHTSA, counted October 10, 2026. Then come the 2017 (1,773), the 2019 (1,103), the 2008 (962) and the 2007 (887). On the 2017 and 2018 the engine is the part named most; on the 2007 and 2008 it is the air bags.
My CR-V overheats and loses coolant. Will Honda cover the head gasket?
Possibly. A Honda bulletin dated August 26, 2026 stretched head gasket coverage on 1.5-turbo CR-Vs from 2017-2026 and on 2020-2026 CR-V Hybrids to a decade after the first sale or 150,000 miles. A 2017 with the 1.5 turbo is covered only to May 31, 2027. If age alone has pushed a CR-V past the 10-year mark, Honda still allows six months from the date it notifies the owner. Have a Honda dealer check the VIN before you sell.
Is the 2017-2018 oil dilution extension still open?
Almost certainly not. Honda's April 2019 extension covered camshafts and rocker arms for 6 years with no mileage cap, and six years have passed on nearly every 2017 and 2018. Cars that were ever totaled, sold as salvage or given a branded title never qualified.
Will Honda buy back a 2007-2011 CR-V with a rotted rear frame?
Sometimes. Recall 23V-228 covers 2007-2011 CR-Vs sold in or ever registered in one of 22 salt-belt states or D.C. A dealer braces or repairs the frame, and if the rust has gone too far, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Ask before you scrap it.
Do you buy a CR-V that won't start or has a broken frame?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us if the rear suspension has come loose or a wheel won't turn, because that decides how it gets loaded.
