Selling a junk or non-running Hummer H2
Of 343 owner complaints NHTSA holds on the Hummer H2, 146 are about the 2003, its first model year, and the component named most on that year was visibility. GM recalled 2003 wiper motors twice, six years apart. If your H2 is parked with a wiper, brake or electrical problem you are done paying for, you can sell it as it is.

What went wrong, by transmission years
AM General built the H2 for General Motors in Mishawaka, Indiana, as a 5-door SUV and a 5-door pickup, per Wikipedia. It rode on GM's GMT825 platform with a 122.8-inch wheelbase, and it is heavy enough, over 8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight, that the EPA never rated its fuel economy. We counted these H2 figures from the NHTSA owner complaint download we pulled on October 10, 2026. Owners logged two complaints as 2002 trucks, though Wikipedia lists model years as 2003-2009.
2003-2004: the 4L60E trucks
These two years used the 6.0-liter LQ4 V8 and a 4-speed 4L60E automatic. Together they have 205 complaints.
The 2003 alone has 146. Visibility leads with 46, then the electrical system (17) and steering (16). Two recalls hit the wipers. Campaign 02V283 covered motors that could fail during use because of improper manufacture; its 1,448 vehicles include other SUVs and passenger vehicles. Campaign 08V456 is H2-only: 13,358 2003 H2s where water can get into the wiper motor module. Dealers replace the module cover for free.
Brakes are the other thread. Recall 04V045 says some 2003-2004 vehicles in the campaign did not meet the federal brake standard, and dealers replace the Hydro-Boost relief valve. Its 68,875 vehicles are SUVs, pickups and vans across the whole campaign, not H2s alone. On the 2004, service brakes is the third most-named component with 8 complaints. The 2003 H2 got recall 03V075 too, over a mechanical key override that failed the federal theft-protection standard, and dealers disabled it. That campaign counts 511,167 sport utility vehicles across the whole campaign, so the number may include other models.
2005-2007: the 4L65E trucks
The V8 stayed and the transmission became the 4L65E. These three years have 127 complaints, 91 of them on the 2005, where the electrical system (25), visibility (15) and air bags (12) lead.
Recall 05V043 reaches the 2004 and 2005: the Bosch Hydro-Boost brake booster's pressure accumulator can crack and separate. Dealers test the assembly. Recall 05V163 reworked a belt guide loop so the middle rear lap belt sits low on the hips. Both campaigns span other GM trucks; 05V163 alone counts 1,359,824 vehicles.
For 2006, recall 05V455 checked for a power steering hose built off specification, and 05V552 corrected tire and loading labels. The 2006 has 25 complaints, and 4 of them each name engine and engine cooling or the electrical system.
2008-2009: the last two years
The 2008 and 2009 together show 9 complaints, 7 and 2, with power train named most. Recall 07V373, for the 2008 model year, says the wires in the ABS wheel speed sensor front or rear harness may be reversed; its 363 vehicles are the whole campaign's count, which may include other models.
Two GM-wide electrical recalls run through the late trucks. Recall 08V441 fits a fused wiring harness to 2006-2008 H2s, in a campaign of 857,735 vehicles that also includes Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC and Saturn models. Recall 10V240 takes the heated washer fluid module out of 2006-2009 H2s for good; its 1,365,070 vehicles span the same brands.
H2 complaints and recalls, by model year
Same October 10, 2026 tally. Many H2 recalls reach across two to four model years, which pushes the recall column total past 11. Owners of 2008 and 2009 H2s have had less time to send in reports.
| Year | Complaints filed | Crashes reported | Fires reported | Injuries reported | Recall campaigns | Top components |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2002 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Power train 1, visibility 1 |
| 2003 | 146 | 13 | 4 | 9 | 4 | Visibility 46, electrical 17, steering 16 |
| 2004 | 59 | 6 | 1 | 5 | 3 | Electrical 10, visibility 10, service brakes 8 |
| 2005 | 91 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 2 | Electrical 25, visibility 15, air bags 12 |
| 2006 | 25 | 3 | 1 | 5 | 4 | Engine and cooling 4, electrical 4, engine 3 |
| 2007 | 11 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 2 | Electrical 3, engine and cooling 1, suspension 1 |
| 2008 | 7 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | Power train 2, speed control 1, electrical 1 |
| 2009 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | Power train 1, suspension 1 |
Over every year, the top components are visibility (73), the electrical system (60), steering (27), service brakes (25), suspension (16) and air bags (15).
Fix the H2 or sell it?
- Search the VIN on NHTSA's recall site and take any open campaign to a dealer. Eleven campaigns touch the H2, and a truck this old has often changed hands.
- Brake trouble? Check whether 04V045 or 05V043 was done on your VIN before you price a repair. Our bad brakes guide covers the rest.
- Big repair quote? Compare it with the asking price of a running H2 with similar miles. If fixing the H2 would cost most of that amount, selling it broken makes sense. See repairs cost more than it is worth.
How to sell an H2 whole
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008. Have the H2's VIN, odometer reading and a quick note on what's wrong ready.
- Mention the pickup body if yours has it, and whether it can roll. At over 8,500 pounds GVWR, it needs the right truck to load it.
- Tell us where it is: driveway, barn, storage lot or repair shop. Free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Keep it whole. Leave the wheels, the spare and the catalytic converter on, and mention anything already removed. Missing parts explains why.
- The driver will need the signed-over title and your photo ID. Title lost? Try selling with no title. Then check after you sell for plates and insurance.

Questions people ask
- Which Hummer H2 year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2003 leads with 146 of 343 in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 count. The 2005 follows at 91, then the 2004 at 59, while the 2008 and 2009 show 7 and 2. The last trucks have spent fewer years collecting complaints, so treat their small numbers with care.
- Why can't I find EPA gas mileage for an H2?
- The H2 is rated over 8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight, which puts it outside the EPA's fuel economy data. It is a heavy truck, which also matters when one is towed away.
- Was there a recall on the 2003 H2's wipers?
- Two. Recall 02V283 covered wiper motors that could fail from improper manufacture, and recall 08V456 covered 13,358 2003 H2s where water can get into the wiper motor module; dealers replace the module cover for free. Put your H2's VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls to check whether that fix was made.
- Will you take an H2 that doesn't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, the H2 SUV and the pickup version included, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say if your H2 can be pushed and where it's parked.
