Selling a dead or junk Hummer H3
Of the 798 Hummer H3 complaints owners sent to NHTSA, 361 name a single model year: the 2006. That was the first H3, and Wikipedia says it was also the only year with the 3.5-liter five-cylinder. If yours is a 2006 with a dead engine, a wiring fault or a hood louver that never stopped rattling, you are in the biggest group in the data.

What owners reported, by engine years
GM built the H3 for the 2006 through 2010 model years on the GMT345 platform, a modified version of what sat under the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups, per Wikipedia. US production was in Shreveport, Louisiana, with more built in South Africa and Russia. The EPA lists two versions: the H3 4WD SUV and the H3T 4WD pickup. Every H3 number below comes from our own count of NHTSA owner reports, done October 10, 2026.
2006: the 3.5 five-cylinder year
The 2006 H3 used a 3.5-liter L52 inline five. It has 361 complaints, more than the next two years put together. The components named most are the electrical system (82), the engine (40) and engine and engine cooling (30). The same year has 27 complaints that report a fire and 10 that report a crash.
Four of the H3's five recall campaigns reach the 2006:
- 05V552, tire and loading labels that did not meet the federal tire-selection standard. Owners got corrected labels. The 32,068 count is for the whole campaign, which the notice says covers "certain trucks and sport utility vehicles", so it is not all H3s.
- 06V417, for certain vehicles first built with cloth seats and an automatic passenger air bag sensing system, then refitted with aftermarket leather covers. Because no replacement leather cover compatible with the sensing system was available, the remedy says GM will repurchase; the NHTSA notice has the details. The campaign counts 794 vehicles.
- 10V179, hood louver clip-tabs that can break and let the louver rattle against the hood. Dealers glue the louver down for free.
- 15V421, the blower motor connector and harness, replaced in part for free.
2007-2010: the 3.7 and the V8
From 2007 the five-cylinder grew to the 3.7-liter LLR, rated at 242 horsepower, then 239 from 2009. A 5.3-liter V8 was also offered. Wikipedia's spec box names a 5-speed Aisin AR5 manual.
These four years have 437 complaints between them. The electrical system still leads each year. On the 2007, structure (21) comes third. On the 2008 and 2009, air bags move up to second place, with 17 and 13 complaints.
Recall 09V080 covers 1,738 of the 2009 H3Ts: the front strap that holds up the fuel tank can break, leaving the rear strap to carry it. Dealers fit a new design strap for free. The hood louver and blower harness recalls run through 2010.
GM said at the end of February 2010 that it would drop the Hummer brand. The last H3T left the Shreveport line on May 24, 2010, and the 2010 has just seven complaints on file.
H3 complaints and recalls, year by year
Tallied October 10, 2026 from the NHTSA owner complaint download. The recall column lists campaigns naming that model year; because the blower and hood campaigns span all five years, its rows total more than five. Late-model H3s have been owned the shortest time, so fewer reports have come in.
| Model year | Owner complaints | Report a crash | Report a fire | Report an injury | Recall campaigns | Most-named components |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2006 | 361 | 10 | 27 | 8 | 4 | Electrical 82, engine 40, engine and cooling 30 |
| 2007 | 237 | 12 | 18 | 19 | 2 | Electrical 65, engine 30, structure 21 |
| 2008 | 113 | 3 | 6 | 5 | 2 | Electrical 27, air bags 17, engine 13 |
| 2009 | 80 | 2 | 5 | 5 | 3 | Electrical 30, air bags 13, structure 8 |
| 2010 | 7 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 2 | Electrical 4, visibility 1, engine 1 |
Across all five years the top components are the electrical system (208), engine (87), structure (63), visibility and wipers (55), air bags (48) and visibility (33). In all, 57 complaints report a fire and 37 report an injury.
Repair it or let it go?
Start with the cheap checks, then weigh the big one.
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. The blower harness and hood louver campaigns cover every model year, so an H3 with several past owners might still have them open.
- Electrical fault? That is the H3's most-reported component in every year. Have it traced before writing the truck off; the electrical problems guide covers how to weigh it.
- Engine gone? Get a written repair price, then hold it up next to what a running H3 with about your miles sells for. When the repair eats most of that, letting it go unrepaired is the better deal. See blown engine and repairs cost more than it is worth.
- Leather seats on a 2006? If it was refitted with aftermarket leather over the passenger sensor, check whether recall 06V417 applies to your VIN.
Selling an H3 as it sits
- Say which body it is. The H3 SUV has a 111.9-inch wheelbase; the H3T pickup stretches to 134.2 inches. The truck that comes needs to know which one it is loading.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008. Give the VIN, mileage, engine and what is wrong.
- Describe where it sits: driveway, field, garage or a shop's back lot, and if it will roll in Neutral. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it whole. Keep the wheels, the rear tire carrier and the catalytic converter in place, and list any part that's gone.
- At H3 pickup, give the driver the title and show photo ID. Title lost? See selling with no title. Plate rules are on after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which Hummer H3 model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2006 leads with 361 of 798 in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 count. Then come the 2007 at 237, the 2008 at 113, the 2009 at 80 and the 2010 at 7. The 2010 was a short final run with fewer years behind it to gather reports, so 7 says little on its own.
- Is there a recall on the H3's blower motor?
- Yes. Recall 15V421 covers 2006-2010 H3s built February 5, 2005 to May 24, 2010 and 2009-2010 H3Ts built May 21, 2008 to May 24, 2010. Dealers replace part of the blower motor connector and harness for free. Enter your H3's VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls to check if it's still open.
- Will you buy an H3 that won't start or move?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, including SUVs and the H3T pickup, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention SUV or H3T, whether the wheels turn, and the spot it occupies.
- Should I pull the five-cylinder or the wheels before I sell?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. List anything already pulled off in your offer request, since it affects the offer.
