Selling an old Hyundai Genesis sedan or coupe
On the 2009 Genesis, 104 of the 235 complaints owners filed with NHTSA are about the service brakes. Hyundai later recalled 43,500 Genesis cars from 2009-2012 (13V489000) because their brake fluid might not protect the ABS hydraulic control unit from corrosion. Brakes lead the complaints on the 2010 too.

The two sedan generations, and the coupe
Every count comes from Genesis owners writing to NHTSA, as tallied on October 10, 2026: accounts of what happened, not confirmed faults. NHTSA files the sedan and the Genesis Coupe under one model name, so the year totals include both. Recall vehicle counts cover the whole campaign, which can include other models.
First generation (BH), built 2008-2013
Wikipedia lists 3.3- and 3.8-liter Lambda II V6s with a 6-speed Aisin automatic, plus a 5.0 R-Spec from 2011 to 2014 with the Tau 5.0 GDi engine and 19-inch wheels. It says Hyundai sold 21,889 Genesis cars in the US in 2009, sedan and coupe combined. The 2009 through 2014 model years hold 1,052 complaints.
- Brakes, 2009-2011. Service brakes top the 2009 (104) and the 2010 (31). Besides 13V489000, recall 14V713000 repaired the stop lamp switch circuit on 2009-2011 Genesis cars and some 2011 Equus (42,925 vehicles).
- Engine, 2012-2013. The engine leads the 2012 (52 of 271) and the 2013 (57 of 200). No engine recall for these years appears in our data.
- Wipers, 2012. Recall 16V117000 replaced the wiper motor cover and seal on 2012 Genesis cars and 2011-2013 Equus.
Second generation (DH), built November 2013-2016
Wikipedia lists 3.3- and 3.8-liter GDi V6s and an 8-speed automatic. The 2015 has the most complaints of any Genesis year, and 95 of its 306 name the electrical system. Several 2015 recalls are electrical or water-related:
- 15V097000: water in the rear lamp housings could show the wrong gear (24,400 vehicles).
- 16V575000: instrument cluster software on 2015 sedans built February to May 2015 (3,031).
- 24V107000: water in the starter solenoid can short it. Park outside until repaired. The campaign covers 90,907 vehicles, including later Genesis G80, G90 and G70 models.
- 21V160000: an ABS module that can short circuit, on 2015-2016 Genesis and 2017-2020 G80 cars, also with a park-outside warning.
- 15V864000: factory Hankook Ventus S1 noble2 tires replaced with another brand (11,142).
Genesis Coupe recalls
Four campaigns name only the coupe. 24V562000 replaces the ignition lock switch on 2010-2013 coupes, because a broken return spring could let the car move when started in gear (12,612). 15V756000 checks the differential on 2013-2015 manual coupes (10,800). 16V722000 secures the passenger seat occupant sensor connector on 2010-2016 coupes (84,500). 20V248000 retightened driver air bag bolts on the 2016 (1,295). The coupe also appears in 23V651000, the big ABS fuse recall that tells owners to park outdoors.
Complaints and recalls by model year
The Genesis numbers are from NHTSA complaint data we downloaded on October 10, 2026. Some Genesis Coupe recalls stretch over up to seven model years, so the recall column totals more than 15.

Keep fixing it, or sell?
- Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. The ABS and starter campaigns on 2015-2016 cars come with a park-outside warning.
- ABS light or a soft pedal on a 2009-2012? Ask a dealer about 13V489000. Our bad brakes guide covers the rest.
- Dash warnings, no-starts or dead electronics on a 2015-2016? See electrical problems, and ask about the starter recall first.
- Big V6 or V8 repair on a ten-year-old luxury sedan? Set a written quote beside what a running one brings. If the quote wins, selling it broken usually makes more sense.
Selling your Genesis whole
- Write down the Genesis VIN, odometer miles and what's wrong. Tell us sedan or Coupe and the engine (3.3, 3.8 or 5.0). For a coupe, add manual or automatic.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it's parked. These are rear-wheel-drive cars, so mention it if a rear wheel or the differential is locked. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Sell it with everything attached. Pulling the R-Spec's 19-inch wheels or other parts first lowers the offer; mention anything already sold.
- Give the driver the title and keys, show ID, and then read after you sell.
Other Hyundais: Equus, Azera, Tiburon, Sonata, or every Hyundai model.
