Selling a junk or non-running Hyundai Sonata
Almost half of all the complaints Sonata owners have filed with NHTSA, 7,981 of 16,990, are about four model years: 2011 through 2014. The 2011 alone has 3,473, more than any other Sonata. And the 2011-2013 cars carry 318 of the 549 complaints that report a fire.

What owners reported, generation by generation
Each number below is a Sonata owner's complaint to NHTSA, tallied through October 10, 2026: an owner's account, never a verified fault. A 2024 Sonata has been on the road a fraction as long as a 2011, so it has had far fewer chances to draw one. Where a recall lists a vehicle count, that figure belongs to the entire campaign, and several of these campaigns reach well beyond the Sonata.
1999-2005: the EF Sonata
Wikipedia dates the fourth-generation EF from 1998. Hyundai facelifted it for the 2002 model year as the EF-B, with a new hood, grille, headlights, tail-lights, dash and seats. These seven model years hold 1,536 complaints. From 1999 through 2002 the part owners named most was structure (62, 91, 60 and 79 complaints). From 2003 to 2005 it was air bags.
2006-2010: the NF and the passenger air bag
Wikipedia lists a 2.0-liter Theta four and a 4-speed automatic for the fifth-generation NF, and a facelift that arrived as a 2009 model. The 2006 has 1,047 complaints, and 394 of them name the air bags. The 2007 adds 242 more.
That matches recall 08V161000: 393,308 Sonatas from 2006-2008 with an occupant classification system in the right front seat. Two more campaigns touch these cars. Recall 13V354000 repairs or replaces the rear crossmember on 2006-2010 Sonatas and 2006-2011 Azeras (364,502 vehicles). The stop lamp switch campaigns, 09V122000 and 13V113000, span many Hyundai models. On the 2010, structure tops the list at 158 of 345.
2011-2014: the YF, where the complaints pile up
Wikipedia lists the sixth-generation YF from 2009, with a facelift for 2012-2014. On the 2011, owners named the steering 1,027 times and the engine 828 times. On the 2012 and 2013 the engine leads, at 521 and 657.
Three recalls go straight at it:
- 15V568000: 2011-2012 Sonatas built at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama with the 2.0- or 2.4-liter engine (470,000 vehicles). The remedy is an inspection, and a whole replacement engine assembly if the car needs it.
- 17V226000: 2013-2014 Sonatas and Santa Fe Sports, 572,000 vehicles between them. Machining mistakes at the engine plant may cause premature bearing wear, and the fix is a new short block where the inspection calls for one.
- 14V434000: 2011-2014 Sonatas (883,000 vehicles) whose transmission shift cable can come off the shift lever.
These years also carry a front seat belt linkage recall (17V152000, then a second repair under 17V617000), an air bag control module filter kit for 2011-2013 (18V137000), and a brake pedal stopper pad on 2011-2012 that can leave the brake light switch plunger extended (15V759000). Recall 23V651000 swaps an ABS fuse on the Sonata Hybrid and many other Hyundais (1,649,478 vehicles in all). Until that's done, owners are told to park outdoors.
2015-2019: the engine still leads
The engine is the top complaint in every one of these years: 538 of 1,202 on the 2015, 468 of 885 on the 2016, 393 of 876 on the 2017. Two recalls reported in June 2014, for 2015 cars built that spring, came with a do-not-drive warning. 14V325000 (2,138 cars) was a wiring harness connection that could reduce steering. 14V368000 (16,900 cars) was front brake calipers that could fracture. Later campaigns updated turn signal software on 2015-2017 Sonatas (21V749000) and replaced trunk latches on 2017-2018 Sonatas along with other models (21V619000).
2020-2026: few complaints so far
These seven years hold 688 complaints. Recall 23V526000 told owners of some 2023 Sonatas, plus Elantras, Konas, Tucsons and Palisades, to park outside because the Idle Stop & Go oil pump controller may have damaged parts.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Source: NHTSA complaint data, pulled October 10, 2026. The fires column is the number of Sonata complaints where the owner reported a fire. A single Sonata campaign often spans several model years, which is why the year-by-year recall figures sum to more than 71.

Repair it or let it go?
- Start with the VIN. Type your Sonata's number into NHTSA's recall lookup. A 2011-2014 Sonata can have engine, shift cable, seat belt and air bag campaigns open at once.
- Knocking or seized engine on a 2011-2014? Before buying a replacement engine, have a Hyundai dealer check your VIN against 15V568000 and 17V226000. Our blown engine guide walks through the rest of the decision.
- Shifter moves but the car doesn't change gear? On 2011-2014 cars, check the shift cable recall, 14V434000, first.
- Nothing in the recalls fits? Hold the shop's written estimate up to the asking price for a running Sonata like yours in year and miles. If the two get close, our guide on repair bills bigger than the car weighs the choice, and an open recall won't block a sale.
Selling your Sonata whole
- Write down the VIN, mileage and the symptom. Say whether it's a Sonata Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid, and whether an engine was already replaced under a recall.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where the Sonata is and if it rolls. If a loose shift cable has it stuck in Park, the truck may need to winch it, so mention that. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Skip the wrenching. A Sonata with its engine, converter and wheels still on is what the offer is based on; parts pulled beforehand lower it.
- On Sonata pickup day, give us the signed title and the keys, and let us see your photo ID. Your state decides if you keep the plates; after you sell has the rules.

Questions people ask
- Which Sonata model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2011 is first, at 3,473 NHTSA complaints up to October 10, 2026. Behind it: 2013 (2,021), 2012 (1,711), 2015 (1,202) and 2006 (1,047). A 2024 or 2025 Sonata hasn't been out long, so its low number means less than it looks.
- The engine in my 2011-2014 Sonata failed. Is there a recall?
- Possibly. Recall 15V568000 is for 2011-2012 Sonatas with the 2.0- or 2.4-liter engine built at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama. A Hyundai dealer inspects the Sonata engine and fits a new engine assembly when it's needed. Recall 17V226000 covers 2013-2014 Sonatas for early bearing wear; dealers replace the short block as needed. Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, then call a Hyundai service desk to find out which campaigns are still open on that car.
- Will you take a Sonata that won't start or won't shift?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Describe the no-start or the stuck shifter, and mention whether the Sonata can be pushed and where it sits.
- Should I pull the battery or the catalytic converter before selling?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. On a Sonata Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid, the hybrid battery stays in too. If a part already walked off, mention it up front.
