Veloster with a dead engine? Here's what the records show
The Veloster's NHTSA file is mostly an engine file. The engine shows up in 471 of 1,354 owner complaints, and it leads for each model year from 2012 through 2017. Three recalls cover Veloster engines.

Two generations, three engine recalls
Hyundai unveiled the Veloster at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show to fill the gap left by the Tiburon, says Wikipedia. Every one was built in Ulsan, South Korea. In July 2021, citing slow sales, Hyundai dropped every US Veloster for 2022 except the high-performance N.
First generation (FS): 2012-2017 model years
Wikipedia lists three 1.6-liter engines for this generation: the Gamma MPi, the Gamma GDI and the Gamma II Turbo GDI. Transmissions were a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic and 6- and 7-speed dual-clutch units.
These six years hold 1,215 of the 1,354 complaints, and 58 of the 59 complaints that report a fire. The 2013 alone has 34 fire reports and 148 engine complaints.
Engine recalls on these years:
- 19V204, 2013 1.6 turbo: engine software may cause pre-ignition. Dealers update the software. The campaign names only the 2013 Veloster, 16,487 vehicles.
- 20V746, 2015-2016: connecting rod bearings may wear early. If a dealer finds bearing damage in the Veloster engine, they put in a new one. The 128,948 vehicles include the 2012 Santa Fe and Sonata Hybrid models, so most are not Velosters.
The 2012 has its own pattern. Visibility is its second-most-named category (45), and two recalls cover panoramic sunroofs that may have been weakened at the factory (12V568 and 13V051). A third, 12V567, covers parking brake parts on manual cars that can bind from moisture and road grime. A later campaign, 23V132, covers 2012-2014 cars whose reverse park aid sensor can short-circuit if liquid gets in.
Second generation (JS): 2019-2022 model years
Wikipedia lists a 1.4 Kappa II T-GDI, a 1.6 Gamma II T-GDI and a 2.0 Nu MPI, with 7- and 8-speed dual-clutch options. These four years have 139 complaints. NHTSA's file shows no complaints under a 2018 model year.
- 21V301, 2019-2021 with the 2.0 Nu: NHTSA says the piston oil rings may lack proper heat treatment. A dealer checks the engine, swaps it when necessary and adds Hyundai's Piston Ring Noise Sensing System. Elantras and Konas are among the 158,493 vehicles.
- 19V311, 2019: the driver's door latch can be damaged in some side crashes and let the door open.
- 22V746, 2021-2022 Veloster N: per NHTSA, the transmission's fail-safe limited-mobility mode might fail to work properly. The dealer checks the transmission and swaps it if it needs it. The campaign covers 56,148 vehicles across six models.
- 24V528, 2019-2022 Veloster N: a failing fuel pump can cost the car its drive power. Genesis G70, Elantra N and Kona N cars make up part of the 54,647.
On the 2021 and 2022, lane departure and steering lead the complaints, not the engine.
Complaints and recalls by model year
We pulled these Veloster complaints from NHTSA on October 10, 2026. Read them as what owners reported, not as confirmed defects or a reliability rating. The 2019-2022 cars have been owned for fewer years than the 2012s, so their numbers run lower. Some campaigns span several years.
| Model year | Complaints | Fires reported | Injuries reported | Recall campaigns | Most-named component |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2012 | 296 | 8 | 29 | 6 | Engine (46) |
| 2013 | 425 | 34 | 10 | 3 | Engine (148) |
| 2014 | 85 | 5 | 0 | 2 | Engine (28) |
| 2015 | 137 | 7 | 4 | 2 | Engine (69) |
| 2016 | 222 | 4 | 11 | 1 | Engine (124) |
| 2017 | 50 | 0 | 1 | 0 | Engine (24) |
| 2019 | 46 | 0 | 3 | 3 | Engine (17) |
| 2020 | 27 | 0 | 0 | 2 | Engine (8) |
| 2021 | 29 | 1 | 0 | 3 | Lane departure (14) |
| 2022 | 37 | 0 | 0 | 2 | Steering (16) |
Two more campaigns cover 2012-2015 cars through other parts. 20V393 covers 2012 cars whose 12-volt accessory socket may have been over-tightened; dealers replace the Tire Mobility Kit outlet plug with a direct-to-battery wire harness. 23V651 replaces the ABS fuse on 2012-2015 cars and tells owners to park outside until it's done. It reaches 1,649,478 vehicles spread over many Hyundai models.
Fix the engine or sell the car?
- Check the VIN against the three engine campaigns at NHTSA's recall lookup. If your car falls under 20V746 or 21V301 and the work is still open, ask a Hyundai dealer how they handle an engine that already quit.
- No matching recall? Set a shop's written quote against the price a working Veloster of your year and trim brings. Our blown engine guide explains how to weigh that.
- Veloster N that won't shift or limps? The DCT is its own question. See dual-clutch trouble.
Selling the Veloster whole
- Note the year, engine and trim. A Turbo or N is worth saying up front.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where the car is and whether it can roll. A seized engine usually still lets the car roll in Neutral; a locked DCT may not.
- Don't strip it. The turbo, catalytic converter and wheels stay on. If the engine has been pulled for a rebuild, say so.
- On Veloster pickup day, hand over the keys and title and show our driver your photo ID. Then follow after you sell for plates and insurance.

Questions people ask
- Which Veloster years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- It's the 2013, at 425 on October 10, 2026. The 2012 (296) and the 2016 (222) come next. The second-generation cars from 2019 to 2022 have 139 between them. Those Velosters are newer too, so owners have had less driving time to report problems.
- Is there an engine recall on my Veloster?
- Possibly. Three campaigns cover engines: 19V204 for the 2013 1.6 turbo, 20V746 for connecting rod bearings on 2015-2016 cars, and 21V301 for piston oil rings on 2019-2021 cars with the 2.0 Nu engine. Under 20V746 and 21V301, a dealer inspects the Veloster engine and swaps in a new one if it's damaged. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Will you take a Veloster with a seized engine?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us it doesn't run and whether it rolls.
- Do I need to take off the Veloster turbo or wheels first?
- No. You sell the whole car as it sits. Pulled parts change the offer, so if anything is already gone, say so up front.
