Selling a junk or non-running Hyundai Accent

Accent owners name the air bag system in NHTSA complaints more than any other part: 417 of 2,030 complaints across the 1995-2022 cars, per NHTSA's records on October 10, 2026. The engine (173) and power train (151) trail well behind. Outside the air bags, owner complaints are spread across many systems rather than piled on one.

What owners reported, generation by generation

Wikipedia lists five Accent generations up to 2022. It dates them by production, so the model-year groups below line up with the breaks as closely as the data allows. Each recall's vehicle total is campaign-wide, and several of these campaigns also took in other Hyundai models.

1995-1999: first generation (X3)

These cars used 1.3 and 1.5-liter Alpha four-cylinders with a 5-speed manual, per Wikipedia. The suspension is the 1995's top complaint: 51 of 142. Three recalls deal with the front end. Recall 96V113 reinforced a lower control arm that could shift after hitting a curb. Recall 02V341 had dealers inspect, and if needed replace, front lower control arms on 1995-1996 cars in salt-belt states. Recall 98V245 added a spring guide so a broken coil spring could not cut into a tire.

Other campaigns from this era: an engine wiring harness the clutch pedal could rub (95V043, 1995), contaminated wiper motor contacts (97V026, 1996-1997), leaking transmission solenoid seals on 1999 automatics (99V178), and fuel tanks that could crack (00V314). That last campaign's 66,086 vehicles include the 1997 Sonata.

2000-2005: second generation (LC)

Wikipedia says this Accent used 1.3 and 1.5-liter Alpha engines plus a 1.5-liter Alpha II, with a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual. Power train complaints lead on the 2000 (28 of 92) and the 2002 (19 of 134). The 2002 also carries five of the eight complaints across all Accent years that report a death.

Recalls here: a relocated PCV hose and heated throttle body for 2000-2001 cars in cold states (01V346), new A-pillar brackets after the 3-door hatchback failed a federal interior-impact test (02V167), and a wiper linkage boot that could stick (00V096).

2006-2011: third generation (MC)

This generation used 1.4 and 1.6-liter Alpha II engines. Air bags top the complaints on the 2006 (23 of 43), the 2007 (42 of 88), the 2008 (34 of 101) and the 2009 (27 of 101). Wiper and visibility complaints come next on most of those years.

The brake light switch was recalled three times. Recalls 09V122 (2006-2007) and 13V113 (2006-2009) each covered many Hyundai models, 532,633 and 1,712,336 vehicles in all. Recall 15V566 names only 2009-2011 Accents built from March 1, 2009 to February 11, 2011.

2012-2017: fourth generation (RB/RC)

Engines were the 1.4 and 1.6-liter Gamma and a 1.4 Kappa. The 2012 has more complaints than any other Accent year. Engine complaints come first on the 2012 (26), 2013 (28) and 2014 (16). Complaints that report a fire run 8, 9, 9 and 11 on the 2012 through 2015.

Recall 23V651 covers 2012-2015 cars over their anti-lock brake control unit. Hyundai's advice until dealers swap the ABS fuse: leave the car parked in the open, away from buildings. Recall 20V393 swapped an over-tightened 12V accessory socket on 2012 cars for a direct-to-battery harness; its 272,126 vehicles include the Elantra, Sonata Hybrid and Veloster. The 2016 and 2017 have no recall campaigns. Air bags lead the 2016's complaints (30, against 28 for the engine) and tie with the engine on the 2017 (19 each).

2018-2022: fifth generation (HC/YC)

Wikipedia lists assembly in Pesquería, Mexico, for this generation. From the 2020 model year a Smartstream 1.6 with a CVT replaced the geared automatic, at 120 hp. These five years have 95 complaints between them, in part because the newest cars haven't been out long. The engine accounts for 18 of the 2019's 31.

Seat belts are the recall story. Recall 22V218 (2020, shared with the Elantra) says front pretensioners may explode when they deploy. Recall 22V354 has dealers cap the pretensioners on 2020-2022 cars. A trunk latch that could stop the trunk opening was recalled on 2018-2020 cars (21V619), in a campaign that also covers the Sonata and Azera.

Fix it or sell it?

First check for free recall repairs by typing the Accent's VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2012-2015, ask a Hyundai dealer whether the ABS fuse recall is done before the car sits in a garage. On a 2020-2022, ask about the seat belt pretensioners. Our open recall guide covers selling with one still open.

Then weigh the paid repair against what a running Accent of the same year would bring. On the 2012-2014 cars, owners name the engine more than anything else. If yours has died, blown engine helps you decide. On a 2020 or later, a slipping or shuddering CVT is covered in failing CVT.

Selling it whole

  1. Write down the VIN, the miles shown and what's wrong. Tell us if it rolls and steers.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it sits. Street parking, a backyard or a shop lot are all fine; the driver loads it right there.
  4. Leave your Accent whole. Mention any part already missing when you request an offer.
  5. On pickup day, the car leaves with its title and keys. No title? Read selling with no title. For plates and insurance afterward, see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Hyundai Accent year has the most NHTSA complaints?
As of October 10, 2026, the 2012 Accent has the most complaints at 153. The 1995 (142), 2013 (141) and 2002 (134) follow. Accents from 2018-2022 are newer, and their owners haven't had long to report, so those low totals prove little.
Why does a recall tell some Accent owners to park outside?
Recall 23V651 is for the anti-lock brake control unit on certain 2012-2015 Accents. The notice says to park outdoors, away from garages and houses, until it's fixed. Dealers replace the ABS fuse for free. The campaign covers 1,649,478 vehicles, and the Accent is only one of the many Hyundai models in it.
Will you buy an Accent that doesn't start or has no title?
We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Lost the title? Our no-title guide explains what your state asks for.
Should I strip my Accent before it's picked up?
No. You sell the whole car as it sits. Leave the Accent's wheels, battery and catalytic converter in place. If any part has been taken off, mention it in your offer request.
