Sell your junk Hyundai Elantra as it sits

No Elantra year tops the 2013 for NHTSA complaints. It sits at 1,345. The part owners named most in them is the steering, at 216. Steering also topped the list on the 2008, 2009 and 2010, which makes it the thread that runs through the middle of this car's history.

A worn-out Elantra doesn't need fixing before it goes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, so you can sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Seven generations at a glance

These numbers are complaints Elantra drivers sent NHTSA, as the file stood on October 10, 2026: what drivers said happened, not what a technician proved. A 2023 Elantra has had a few years to draw complaints; a 2002 has had more than twenty. Generations and engines come from Wikipedia; the model-year groups are ours.

1992-2000: air bags, then the drivetrain

On the 1994 and 1995, air bags were the top complaint (28 and 33). On the 1997, 1998 and 1999, the power train led. Recall 00V259001 re-routed the mass air flow sensor wiring on 1999-2000 Elantras and some V6 Sonatas because of low-speed stalling. That campaign covered 165,977 vehicles across both models.

2001-2006: front suspension and the passenger seat

Suspension complaints peak here: 70 on the 2001, 89 on the 2002, 46 on the 2003. Recall 09V125000 checks the front lower control arms for internal corrosion on 2001-2003 Elantras and 2003 Tiburons first sold or now registered in named states, Delaware, Maine and Michigan among them (160,904 vehicles).

Two more recalls apply to these years, and both campaign counts may include other Hyundai models. 03V257000 moved rear brake tubes that could touch the steering gearbox brackets on 2001-2003 cars (312,292 vehicles). 04V178000 put a new fuel tank valve on 2002-2003 cars, since the first one might stay open in a rollover (263,968 vehicles). On the 2004, 111 of 182 complaints name the air bags. Recall 05V395000 reprogrammed the passenger occupant classification system on 2004-2005 cars so it would not read a child seat as an adult.

2007-2010: the steering years

On the 2009, 132 of 286 complaints are about steering; on the 2010, 201 of 454. Recall 15V100000 checks and updates the electric power steering control unit on 2008-2010 Elantras and 2009-2010 Elantra Tourings (204,768 vehicles). Recall 11V143000 covers the passenger seat weight sensor connector on 2007-2009 cars. Recall 20V061000 adds a relay against an ABS short circuit on 2007-2010 Elantras and 2009-2011 Tourings. Hyundai later widened that one to some Entourage and Santa Fe models, for 476,111 vehicles in all.

2011-2015: the peak complaint years

Wikipedia lists Montgomery, Alabama among this generation's plants, and a 2-door coupe for 2012-2014. No Elantra year draws more complaints than the 2013, and steering (216), the engine (179) and air bags (157) lead them. On the 2012, air bags lead with 123 of 675. Recall 13V115000 glued down a headliner bracket that could shift when the side curtain air bag deploys (2011-2013). Recall 17V769000 replaced a brake pedal stopper pad on 2013-2014 sedans, coupes and GTs. The 23V651000 ABS fuse recall, shared with a long list of other Hyundais, also reaches these Elantras and asks owners to leave them parked outdoors until the new fuse is in.

2016-2020: the engine takes over

The engine is the top complaint in all five years: 105, 264, 145, 133 and 101. The 2017 stands out with 792 complaints, 124 of them about structure. Recall 24V146000 replaced trunk latches on 2015-2016 Elantras that could stop the trunk opening from inside.

2021-2026: seat belts and electronics

Electrical system complaints lead from 2021 through 2024. Seat belt complaints (21 on the 2021, 27 on the 2022) line up with recall 22V354000, which capped front pretensioners on 2021-2022 Elantras, Elantra Hybrids and some Accents (230,233 vehicles). Under recall 24V879000, 2021-2022 Elantras and Santa Fes get new rearview cameras.

Complaints and recalls by model year

These are the Elantra entries in NHTSA's complaint data, taken October 10, 2026. Many Elantra campaigns reach across several model years, so the recall numbers below total more than 63.

Worth fixing?

  • Check open recalls first at NHTSA's lookup. If you own a 2008-2010 Elantra, ask the dealer about its steering update.
  • Brake warning lights or a soft pedal on a 2007-2015? Several ABS and brake recalls apply. Our bad brakes guide covers what to check.
  • Warning lights and dead accessories on a 2021-2024? Electrical complaints lead those years. See electrical problems before paying for diagnosis.
  • Engine knocking on a 2016-2020? The engine leads complaints on all five of those years. Price the repair in writing, then check listings for a running Elantra of that year; the blown engine page explains how to weigh the two.

How the sale works

  1. Gather the VIN, mileage and what's wrong. Name the body: sedan, Coupe, GT hatchback, Touring wagon or Hybrid.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it sits. An old first- or second-generation car on flat tires in a backyard is fine; just tell us so the right truck comes. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Resist parting it out. An Elantra with its wheels, battery and converter in place is the car the offer describes. List anything already pulled.
  5. Hand over the title, keys and ID at pickup. Then check after you sell for your state's plate and insurance rules.

Old and high-mileage? Read selling an old car. Other Hyundais: Sonata, Accent, Veloster, or all Hyundai models.

Questions people ask

Which Elantra years have the most NHTSA complaints?
It's the 2013, at 1,345 on October 10, 2026. After it come the 2017 (792), the 2012 (675), the 2011 (462) and the 2010 (454). A 2024, 2025 or 2026 Elantra is still young, and part of its low count is simply that.
My 2008-2010 Elantra's steering feels heavy or stiff. Is that a recall?
It may be. Recall 15V100000 covers 2008-2010 Elantras and 2009-2010 Elantra Tourings: dealers check the electric power steering and update its control unit. Steering was the part owners named most on the 2009 (132 complaints) and 2010 (201). Run your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Will you buy an old Elantra that has been parked for years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention how many years it has been parked, whether the tires still hold air, and its location.
