Selling a dead or junk car in Eagle
Eagle's code spells out that a junk car can break the rules on its owner's own land. Section 4-7-3 says "one way a violation of section 4-7-5-1 of this chapter occurs is where a junk vehicle is left by its owner on property of the vehicle owner." It does not have to be on a street or a neighbor's lot. If yours fits, we buy whole non-running and junk cars, you sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

When Eagle calls a car junk
Section 4-7-3 says "junk vehicles fail to conform to vehicle equipment standards and are not in the process of repair and restoration." Part of the test asks whether the car falls short of Idaho's equipment standards in chapter 9, title 49, through damage or neglect. There is an exception "if the vehicle is driven on the City streets and roadways on a regular basis." A car that only moves on a trailer gets no such pass.
The nuisance chapter (4-1-1) adds a vehicle "in a wrecked, partially dismantled, inoperative, or dilapidated condition," and lists "one or more junk vehicle(s)" left unenclosed or in public view under title 8.
Restoring at home is allowed, with limits. Section 8-3-5 permits "hobbyist restoration of vehicles" only "if entirely enclosed within an accessory structure or garage." If the build in the driveway has stalled, old project car talks through the choice.
The 48-hour notice
When an officer finds an abandoned car, section 4-7-6-4 has them attach a notice "in plain view" that it "will be towed away at the expiration of forty eight (48) hours." The notice gives the officer's name, when it was posted, when the car will be removed and a city phone number. If the car has current plates and registration, the city makes a reasonable attempt to phone the owner first. But "any vehicle which does not have current or any license plates attached may be immediately removed."
To get a towed car back before it is sold, section 4-7-6-11 says the owner proves ownership and pays towing, storage, advertising costs and any fines. More in towed or impounded.
Selling from Eagle
Eagle is in Ada County, so the title paperwork runs through the Ada County assessor's motor vehicle office. Title: $14 plus the county's fee.
Your part as the seller is short:
- Sign the title over, and mark it "for junk only" if the car is going for scrap.
- Pull the plates and keep the registration card.
- Send ITD the release of liability inside 5 days. It costs $3.50.
An Eagle buyer who takes longer than 30 days to title it pays a $20.00 penalty. See after you sell.
