Selling a dead or junk car in Nampa
Nampa issues a permit for keeping dead cars on a property. Under section 6-8-6, a salvage permit allows "two inoperative vehicles on the property: one vehicle being used as salvage and one vehicle being repaired." Lose the permit and the city gives 48 hours' notice to clear them. If the project has stalled, selling may be the simpler path. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, you sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The 48-hour order
Section 6-8-5 opens with the city's reasons: broken glass, standing water, rusted parts and the "potential for breeding of vermin." It bars anyone in charge of a property, owner or tenant alike, from allowing a partially dismantled, inoperative or wrecked vehicle there. Licensed dismantlers, dealers and properly screened business storage are exempt.
Police or code enforcement may order the car removed "within 48 hours in accordance with Idaho Code sections 49-1804 and 49-1806." If nobody is home and the owner cannot be found, a notice fixed to any building on the lot counts as notice to everyone. Refusing to remove the car is a misdemeanor. If the city tows it, you are billed the actual cost of the tow plus the actual cost of storage for each day the city holds it.
How the salvage permit works
The permit covers two cars, one stripped for parts and one under repair. Both must be parked within the general rules in title 10, chapter 22, and the zoning district's parking rules. The code revokes the permit if conditions slip, and "failure to demonstrate significant progress" leads to the same end, with 48 hours' notice. Anything still there afterward is removed at the permit holder's cost. Once the parts car has nothing left to give, part it out or sell it whole weighs both paths.
Streets and lots
Section 6-8-1 says Nampa streets are for "legally registered, operating motor vehicles," and that parking inoperative, unauthorized or unregistered vehicles on them "constitutes a public nuisance." Under 6-8-2, a vehicle that stays "upon the street or other public property for a period of time longer than 48 hours," with an owner who cannot be found or will not move it, is abandoned. Unregistered means no current Idaho plates or decals and no current registration in any other state.
Parking lots carry their own rule. Section 7-2-21 lets police or code enforcement remove cars that appear abandoned in the lots it covers. Police may also remove cars parked unlawfully in spaces during posted overnight hours, between two and six in the morning. The owner pays the removal costs and is told where the car went. For getting one back, see towed or impounded.
Title and plates in Canyon County
Canyon County's assessor runs the motor vehicle office Nampa sellers use. The state charges $14 for a title, with a county admin fee on top. A Nampa car sold for scrap gets "for junk only" written on its title's front. Each title after that repeats the mark.
Your plates go home with you, along with the registration card. Inside 5 days of delivery, send ITD the release of liability; it costs $3.50 and shields you from later infractions, towing, storage and repair bills on the car. The after you sell guide covers the rest.

Questions people ask
- How long do I have after Nampa orders a dead car removed?
- Police or code enforcement may order an inoperative vehicle removed within 48 hours under section 6-8-5. Leave it there and the city may haul it off, billing the real tow cost and the real daily storage for as long as it keeps the car.
- Can I keep a parts car in Nampa?
- With a salvage permit under section 6-8-6, a property may hold two inoperative vehicles: one used for salvage and one being repaired. The permit can be revoked, followed by 48 hours' notice, if its conditions lapse or the repair shows no significant progress.
- Is a car with no registration allowed on a Nampa street?
- No. Section 6-8-1 says parking inoperative, unauthorized or unregistered vehicles on city streets is a public nuisance. Streets are for legally registered, operating vehicles.
