Selling a dead or junk car in Kuna

Kuna's junk label reaches cars that run fine. Section 8-1-4 says the word covers "all automobiles which are inoperative or unregistered." A running car with lapsed registration fits as well as one that will not start. If you would rather sell than re-register it or build a shed, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Where junk cannot be kept

The same section makes it unlawful to store junk "adjacent to or in close proximity to any schoolhouse, church, public park, public grounds, business buildings or residence within the city limits, without first providing tight and proper buildings for the storage of the same." Inside town, a residence is next to almost every lot. In practice, an unregistered or dead car belongs inside a closed building or off the property. A car that has sat for years on old tags is the usual case.

The notice and the five days

The city's first step is paper. A violator "shall be served by the city by written notice stating the nature of the violation," with a deadline "not to exceed five (5) days" to fix it. Five days is the ceiling; the notice may give less.

If the title is lost, that window goes by fast. If paperwork is the holdup, start the duplicate early: form ITD 3367 needs a notary, and it can be filed only by the recorded owner, the recorded lienholder, or an agent for one of them. Selling with no title explains the steps. If a notice has already arrived, see notice to remove a car.

Registration and a state limit

Idaho law draws one line worth knowing. Lapsed or improper registration, by itself, is not grounds to treat a car on private land as unauthorized and tow it. Kuna's own rule is a city storage rule, and its first step is a written notice.

Idaho spreads registration out by month. Your card shows which month is yours.

Title and plates

Kuna sits in Ada County. You take the title papers to the Ada County assessor's motor vehicle office. On top of the $14 state fee, it adds a county admin fee.

At the sale, write "for junk only" across the front of the title if the car will not be driven again. Hold on to the plates and registration card. Idaho never lets them leave with the car. Within 5 days, file the $3.50 release of liability with ITD so later tickets, tows and storage bills are not yours.

Questions people ask

In Kuna, does a running car with expired registration count as junk?
Under section 8-1-4, yes. The section says junk includes all automobiles which are inoperative or unregistered, and it bars storing junk near homes, schools, churches, parks or businesses without proper buildings.
How long does Kuna give me after a junk notice?
The city serves written notice of the violation with a deadline that cannot exceed five days. The notice may set a shorter time.
Can the car be towed from private land just because its tags expired?
Not on that ground alone. Under Idaho law, an out-of-date or improper registration is not, on its own, a reason to remove a car as unauthorized.
