Selling a dead or junk car in Rexburg

Before you junk a car in Rexburg, find the title. Idaho's code offers no way to junk a car without a title, and forms alone don't retire one. Idaho Code 49-516 says every owner of a dismantled or destroyed vehicle hands the certificate of title to ITD, and ITD cancels it. Under 49-519, keeping the title after a car is dismantled breaks the law. So the paper trail is the first job, not the last.

If the title is lost

For a missing title, Idaho uses the Duplicate Idaho Title Application, ITD 3367. Three things to know:

  1. It must be notarized.
  2. A Rexburg application is filed by the owner or lienholder of record, or by a person acting on their behalf.
  3. The fee is $14, plus the county's admin fee.

For an odometer-exempt car, a Duplicate with Transfer handles the new copy and the sale together, for $14. And when a properly released title cannot be obtained at all, a bill of sale can be used with extra steps through a Conditional Title Statement of Facts. More on each in selling with no title. If the title names a parent, a former roommate or anyone other than you, read car not in your name first.

Rexburg's own code

We could not find Rexburg's city code online, so we have no local junk-car section to quote. Idaho law applies in the city. A local ordinance on dead or unregistered cars, if Rexburg has one, would sit on top of what is here.

One state rule shows why the title matters even if you do nothing. 30 days after the first notice is mailed, a Rexburg tow company holding an unclaimed car can seek a title or junk certificate for it. After that, the car is no longer yours to sell.

Signing it over in Madison County

Private-sale title paperwork goes through the Madison County assessor's motor vehicle office. Filing is the buyer's job, due within 30 days; late filers pay $20.00.

Sign over the current title, and have any listed lienholder sign a release. Rexburg cars from after model year 2010 that weigh under 16,000 lb need an odometer disclosure as well. If the car is going to scrap, its title front says "for junk only" from this sale on.

Plates and the release

Keep the plates and registration card; Idaho leaves them with the seller. To put the plate on your next car, register that car and pay $5. Rexburg sellers must get the release of liability to ITD within 5 days of giving up the keys. That $3.50 form clears your name of later tickets, towing or storage charges on the car.

Getting an offer

Ring (877) 421-6008 or send the form. Give the brand, model year, miles and how it runs, and tell us about the title, even if that status is "lost." We can load at a Rexburg apartment lot, a driveway or a shop.

Questions people ask

Can I junk a car in Rexburg without the title?
Idaho Code has no title-free junk route. Paperwork by itself can't end a car's life. The owner has to hand the title in to ITD. If your Rexburg title is lost, file ITD 3367, the notarized "Duplicate Idaho Title Application", for a new one.
Who can apply for a duplicate Idaho title?
Only the recorded owner or lienholder, or a person acting on their behalf. No one else. Get the form notarized. It costs $14 with the county's admin fee on top.
Does Rexburg have its own junk-car rules?
Our search came up empty on Rexburg's code, so this page works from Idaho statutes. A local ordinance on inoperable cars is still possible.
