A short-lived Isuzu
Wikipedia gives the Axiom's production as 2001 to 2004, at Subaru Isuzu Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. It used a 3.5-liter 6VE1 V6, including a direct-injection version, with a 4-speed automatic. It's related to the Rodeo and followed the Trooper.
It was discontinued in July 2004, and the Lafayette plant was retooled to build the Subaru B9 Tribeca. The Ascender took its place. Isuzu stopped selling passenger vehicles in the US on January 31, 2009, per Wikipedia's Isuzu article.
The 2002: power train and structure
Each Axiom figure is a report an owner sent NHTSA, taken from data pulled October 10, 2026. None of them rate quality. On the 2002, power train and structure are named 28 times each, and the hydraulic service brakes 15 times. Thirteen 2002 complaints report a crash.
Four campaigns list the 2002. The vehicle totals describe each campaign in full, other models possibly among them.
- 03V113000: after an NHTSA head-impact test under the federal interior-protection standard, Isuzu offered to add energy-absorbing parts in the roof area. 11,855 vehicles.
- 10V436000: covers the 2002 Axiom along with 1998-2002 Rodeos in certain states, and Honda's 1998-2002 Passport. Dealers inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area. The 149,992 count includes all of them.
- 05V466000 (2002-2004): after silicon-contaminated fuel, the fuel pump feed port could develop small pinholes. 15,515 vehicles.
- 02V213000: passenger air bag inflators shipped without a check valve pin. 15 vehicles.
Rust on the 2003-2004
Wikipedia's Axiom article says a 2013 recall, campaign 13V547000, was issued for frames with severe rust. The NHTSA notice applies to the 2003-2004 Axiom and Rodeo and the 2003 Rodeo Sport when Maine, New Hampshire or another listed state is where it was first sold or is registered now. The dealer inspects the rear lower link bracket and treats light corrosion. That campaign counts 8,816 vehicles.
On the 2004, the engine and engine cooling lead with 9 of 17 complaints. The 2003 also carries 03V390000, a brake fluid warning lamp that wouldn't light; all 55 vehicles were repaired.
Axiom complaints and recalls by year
| Model year | Complaints | Report a crash | Most-named component | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2001 | 1 | 0 | Air bags (1) | 0 |
| 2002 | 124 | 13 | Power train (28), structure (28) | 4 |
| 2003 | 16 | 3 | Brakes (3), power train (3) | 3 |
| 2004 | 17 | 2 | Engine and engine cooling (9) | 2 |
Pulled October 10, 2026. The 2004 is the youngest Axiom, so it's had the shortest time to gather reports. Recalls covering two or three years appear in each.
Repair or sell?
- Run your VIN through NHTSA. Two bracket campaigns split the Axiom: 10V436000 for the 2002, 13V547000 for the 2003-2004.
- Rust at the rear link or the frame? That can decide it on its own. Read rotted frame, and failed inspection or rust if it just failed a state check.
- Engine or transmission gone? A repair estimate that rivals the price of a running Axiom from your year is your answer.
Selling an Axiom as it sits
- Jot down the VIN, odometer reading and drive type (2WD or 4WD), plus a line on what's broken.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it is and whether the rear end still holds it up and rolls. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it complete. If wheels, the battery or the catalytic converter are already gone, say so.
- When we collect the Axiom, sign over its title and show your ID. See after you sell for plates and insurance. All Isuzu models we cover are on the make page.
