Selling a broken-down Isuzu Ascender

The Ascender was an Isuzu badge on a General Motors SUV. Wikipedia lists GM as the manufacturer, the GMT360 platform and the GMC Envoy as a relative. Its biggest recalls name Trailblazers, Envoys and Rainiers alongside it. The electrical system tops its NHTSA file: 65 of 205 complaints.

If your Ascender has a dead door module, a fuel problem or an engine that's quit, you can sell it whole. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

What the Ascender was

  • Engine and gearbox: a 4.2-liter LL8 Vortec inline-six and a 4-speed automatic.
  • Plants: Moraine, Ohio and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
  • Two lengths: EPA lists 5-passenger and 7-passenger versions. The long 7-passenger truck was dropped after the 2006 model year, and its production ended in February 2006 when GM closed the Oklahoma City plant, per Wikipedia's Isuzu article.
  • The end: production stopped on June 6, 2008, as Isuzu left the US market. Isuzu stopped selling passenger vehicles here on January 31, 2009.

When new, Isuzu backed it with a seven-year, 75,000-mile powertrain warranty, Wikipedia notes. Every Ascender is past that now.

Where owners reported trouble

Every Ascender count below is an owner report from NHTSA data pulled October 10, 2026. Read it as what owners raised, not a score. The later Ascenders also had a shorter run of years in which to draw reports. After the electrical system, the most-named components are the gasoline fuel system (35), fuel and propulsion (15), exterior lighting (11) and air bags (9).

2003-2005: electrical complaints peak

The 2004 and 2005 hold 128 complaints between them, and the electrical system leads both years (26 and 23). The 2003 adds 35. Five campaigns list the 2003:

  • 05V494000: a rear side door latch that could stop latching or unlatching from road-salt corrosion, on trucks sold or registered in certain states. 98,007 vehicles in the campaign.
  • 05V198000 (2003-2004): a turn signal flasher module fault. The campaign counts 286,478 trucks and SUVs, a total that may span other models.
  • 04V061000: wipers that wouldn't turn on, stopped mid-use or ran by themselves. 439 vehicles.
  • 03V213000 and 03V269000: an ignition key override that broke the federal theft-protection rule, and an owner's manual that didn't explain the child-seat anchor symbols.

The 2005 has one campaign, 05V035000: the windshield urethane bead might not have stuck to the body in places. The 17,815 total may include other models; the notice gives Buick and Chevrolet contact lines.

2006-2008: the GM campaigns

Fewer complaints here, 32 on the 2006 and 10 on the 2007, with the fuel system leading the 2007 (5 of 10). The recalls are where these years stand out:

  • 12V406000, 13V248000, 14V404000 (2006-2007): liquid getting into the driver's door module and its switches. Per Wikipedia, the 2012 action targeted shorts in the window and lock switches, a fire risk. Each count (278,174, 193,652 and 184,611) covers Trailblazer, Envoy, Rainier and Saab 9-7x models too.
  • 15V519000 (2006-2008): dealers replace the headlamp driver module. 429,170 vehicles in the campaign, including Buick LaCrosse, Grand Prix and the GM SUVs.
  • 05V455000 (2006): a power steering hose not built to spec. 123,592 vehicles, which may include other models.
  • 05V552000 (2006): a wrong tire and loading label. 32,068 vehicles.

Before you pay for a repair

  1. Pull up open recalls by VIN on NHTSA's site, especially on a 2006 or 2007, where three door-module campaigns apply.
  2. Electrical gremlins on a 2004 or 2005? Get them traced before you buy parts. Our electrical problems guide covers how to weigh it.
  3. An open recall doesn't stop a sale. See selling with an open recall.
  4. Hold the quote up against the truck. A fuel-system or engine bill that nears the price of a running Ascender from your year says sell.

Selling an Ascender whole

  1. Five seats or seven? Say which, with the VIN and odometer reading.
  2. Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where the Ascender is parked, and if its wheels turn and its steering responds. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep it complete. The inline-six, wheels and battery all stay put; flag anything missing.
  5. Hand our driver the Ascender's signed title and keys, and the driver will check your ID. For plates and insurance, see after you sell. Other Isuzu models, like the Axiom it replaced, have their own pages.

Questions people ask

Who actually built the Isuzu Ascender?
General Motors. Wikipedia lists GM as the manufacturer, on the GMT360 platform, related to the GMC Envoy, built in Moraine, Ohio and Oklahoma City.
What was the Ascender power window and door switch recall?
Three campaigns cover 2006-2007 Ascenders: 12V406000, 13V248000 and 14V404000. Wikipedia says the 2012 action dealt with shorts in the window and lock switches that posed a fire risk. Each campaign also covers Trailblazer, Envoy, Rainier and Saab 9-7x models, so the vehicle counts are not Ascender-only.
Why are there no complaints on file for the 2008 and 2009?
None show in our October 10, 2026 count. Production ended on June 6, 2008, per Wikipedia. Recall 15V519000 does list the 2008 model year.
Will you buy an Ascender that won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us the symptoms and where it's parked.
