A note on the data
NHTSA's complaint file, pulled October 10, 2026, is the source for every count here. Each entry is something an owner chose to report, so it isn't a test result or a score. The last trucks, 2001 and 2002, have been around for a shorter stretch than the 1980s ones, so they've had less chance to pile up reports. Recall vehicle totals are campaign-wide and may take in other models. Enter your VIN on NHTSA's recall page to see what's open on yours.
Problems by generation
Wikipedia splits the Trooper into two generations, both built at Isuzu's Fujisawa Plant in Japan. EPA data starts at the 1984 model year.
First generation, built 1981 to 1991
Engines were four-cylinders: a 1949 cc G200Z, a 2255 cc 4ZD1 and a 2559 cc 4ZE1, with a 4-speed manual listed. The 1985 through 1990 model years hold 109 complaints. On the 1986, seat belts lead (10 of 27).
The recalls from this stretch are mostly about hardware:
- 92V093000 (1984-1987): in salt-belt states the rear door hinges could corrode. With a misaligned latch, the doors could close in a false latch. 49,300 vehicles in the campaign.
- 87V057000 (1987): two-piece aluminum wheels might not have been welded where the wheel is pressed onto the rim. 2,349 vehicles.
- 88V062000 (1988): a guide pin on the rear disc brake caliper support could loosen in transport. 22,591 vehicles.
- 89V001000 (1987-1988): a heater bolt sat too close to a fuel pipe; under severe use the pipe could rupture. 463 vehicles.
- 90V166000 and 90V167000 (1990-1991): an oil cooler hose could touch the exhaust manifold and melt, and overfilling the automatic transmission could push oil onto the manifold.
The 1991 model year
Production of the first generation ended in 1991 and the second began the same year, so the 1991 sits on the line. It has 57 complaints, and 15 of them report a fire. That's the most fire reports of any Trooper year, out of 37 in total.
Second generation, built 1991 to 2002
Wikipedia lists a 2.6-liter 4ZE1 four, a 3.2-liter 6VD1 V6 and a DOHC version of that V6, with a 4-speed automatic. The short-wheelbase VehiCROSS is related. The 1992 through 2002 model years hold 437 complaints.
- 94V132000 (1992-1994): on these Troopers, the plug sealing the camshaft end could back out of the cylinder head and let oil leak. 122,297 vehicles in the campaign.
- 04V199000 (1992-1995): a sticking accelerator cable could keep engine speed up after you lift off the pedal. 72,905 vehicles.
- 97V092001 (1996-1997): the left front brake line could sit too close to the upper control arm. 6,667 vehicles.
- 96V248001 (1996), 97V035001 (1997), 98V180000 (1998): a rear center belt buckle meant for another market, front hubs missing a lock washer or screws, and transfer case flange nuts that could loosen.
- 00V253000 and 00V376000 (2000-2001): on 4WD automatics with torque-on-demand, a fuel line and hose could separate in some high-speed frontal crashes. Dealers added shields and a reinforced hose.
Vehicle speed control complaints also show up late, with 5 on the 1999, 6 on the 2001 and 3 on the 2002.
When the Trooper ended, Wikipedia names the Axiom and the Ascender among its successors in North America.
Trooper complaints, fires and recalls by year
The 1984 has no complaints in the file. A recall listed for several model years shows up in every one of them.

- Engine trouble on a V6 Trooper? Get a real diagnosis and a written quote, then read blown engine for how to weigh it against what the truck is worth running.
- A 1992-1995 that revs on after you lift off? That matches recall 04V199000. Check the VIN before anything else.
- A 1984-1987 truck from the salt belt? Check the rear door hinges and latches; the 92V093000 campaign covered those years.

Questions people ask
- Which Trooper years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1999, with 81 in the October 10, 2026 count; 55 of the 81 point at the engine and its cooling. Next come the 1991 (57), the 1995 (54) and the 1996 (51).
- What was the Trooper accelerator cable recall?
- Recall 04V199000, filed in 2004, covers 1992-1995 Troopers. The accelerator cable could stick, so the engine would not slow right away when you let off the pedal. Dealers replaced the throttle cable rubber boot. The 72,905 count is for the whole campaign.
- Will you buy a Trooper with a dead engine?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. A Trooper that hasn't turned over in years is fine; just say how long it's been sitting.
- Does it matter which generation my Trooper is?
- It helps us describe it right. The first generation was built from 1981 to 1991 with four-cylinder engines; the second from 1991 to 2002, with a 2.6 four or a 3.2 V6. The VIN and model year settle it.
