The one recall and the 1991 pattern
NHTSA lists a single campaign, 92V091, for 1990-1992 cars. The worry was the hub at the center of the steering wheel, which could crack in some frontal and near-frontal collisions. The remedy was a reinforcement plate and nut fitted to that hub. The campaign counted 25,059 vehicles, a total that also takes in the Impulse.
On the 1991, owners most often named the electrical system (6 complaints), vehicle speed control (5) and engine and engine cooling (4). Across all years, electrical and speed control tie at 7 each.
Complaints by model year
Stylus owner reports to NHTSA, pulled on October 10, 2026. A Stylus complaint tells what one owner went through, and nobody has proven a defect from it.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Top category | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1991 | 21 | 3 | Electrical system (6) | 1 |
| 1992 | 4 | 0 | Brakes, structure, speed control (1 each) | 1 |
| 1993 | 1 | 0 | Vehicle speed control | 0 |
| 1994 | 1 | 0 | Engine and engine cooling | 0 |
No complaints are on file for the 1990, the first EPA year. The 1994 row sits after the last one, 1993.
Is it worth fixing?
Begin with a VIN search on NHTSA's recall lookup. After that it is a quote against a value. A running 1990s compact is not worth much, so a big engine or wiring bill can pass it quickly. If the car won't start at all, car doesn't run explains your choices, and old or high mileage covers cars where age is the real issue.
