Selling an old Jeep CJ that no longer runs

Five of the 11 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the 1984-1986 Jeep CJ mention a fire. Engine and engine cooling is the component named most, also five times. The numbers are tiny because the file only reaches the last three years of a line Wikipedia dates to 1944.

A CJ that won't start, has rusted out, or stalled halfway through a restoration can still go as one piece. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The last CJs: CJ-7 and CJ-8

EPA's file names three versions for 1984-1986: the CJ7, the CJ7 4WD and the CJ8 4WD. Wikipedia calls the CJ-8 the Jeep Scrambler, a long-wheelbase CJ-7 sold from 1981 through 1986. It rode on a 103.5-inch wheelbase, and its removable half cab formed a small pickup-style box instead of a separate bed. Wikipedia counts 8,355 built in 1981, 7,759 in 1982 and 5,405 in 1983.

Under these late trucks, Wikipedia lists a Dana 300 transfer case (1980-1986), a wide-track Dana 30 front axle and a wide-track two-piece AMC 20 rear (both 1982-1986). It names the Wrangler YJ as the successor. The line traces back to the Willys MB, built in Toledo, Ohio.

The photo above is an early one: a 1945-49 CJ-2A, decades older than the CJ-7s and CJ-8s in EPA's data.

What owners reported, year by year

1984. One complaint, about the seat belts. This is also the only year with a recall. Campaign 88V009 found the left tie rod end could crack from fatigue in its threaded section because of improper heat treatment. The fix was a properly hardened replacement end. The campaign lists 230 vehicles.

1985. Six complaints, the most of the three years. Three involve a fire. Engine and engine cooling comes up 3 times, power train 2.

1986. Four complaints, two with a fire. Engine and engine cooling 2, power train 1, service brakes 1.

No complaint on any of the three years reports a crash, an injury or a death.

Totals reflect owner filings with NHTSA through October 10, 2026. These CJ numbers are owner reports, not a reliability grade, and later CJ years gave owners fewer years to report.

Restore it, repair it, or let it go

Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, especially on a 1984 with original steering parts. If the Jeep has burned, as five owners reported, our fire damage guide explains what still has value. If it's a half-done restoration, see old project car.

Before you spend on it, price the work in writing, then look up what a CJ-7 or Scrambler that runs, same year, sells for near you.

Selling the CJ whole

  1. Note the VIN, the model (CJ-7 or CJ-8) and what's wrong.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say what's attached. Tops, doors and a half cab that are off but coming along should be mentioned up front.
  4. Say where the Jeep is parked. Mention if the wheels turn freely, which tells the driver what to bring.
  5. Find the title. You'll show a photo ID too. Missing title? Start with selling with no title.

For the Jeep that came next, see the Wrangler.
