Selling a dead or junk Jeep Cherokee

The Cherokee name disappeared from North America after 2001 and came back for 2014 on a front-drive crossover. That first year back is the most complained-about Cherokee there is: 2,648 owner complaints in NHTSA's file at our October 10, 2026 pull, and 1,120 of them name the power train. The old boxy XJ has its own, very different list.

XJ, 1984-2001: brakes and body

Wikipedia calls the XJ one of the first compact SUVs. It skipped a separate frame for a lightweight unibody. Its 18 model years hold 4,751 complaints.

  • Brakes. The hydraulic brakes lead most XJ years. On the 1990, 134 of 270 complaints name them; on the 1991, 136 of 233. Three rotor recalls (98V005, 99V340 and 00V136) swapped in corrosion-coated rotors on cars sold or registered in salt states. Each campaign covers other models too.
  • Structure. On the 1994, 194 of 519 complaints name the structure, and on the 1995, 138 of 608. The 1995 also has 91 complaints reporting a crash, the most of any XJ year.
  • Air bags. Recall 00V105 covers 1997-1999 SUVs whose air bag control module can corrode from water and road salt. Dealers moved the new module to the top of the transmission tunnel. The campaign's 395,000 vehicles may include other models.
  • Small things. Recall 97V194 replaced fuel level senders on 1997 models that showed more fuel than was in the tank. Recall 90V177 swapped throttle position sensors on 1989-1990 models; a bad one could make the engine idle fast just after it fired up.

KL, 2014-2023: the 9-speed years

The KL was the first Jeep built on Fiat's Compact platform, assembled in Belvidere, Illinois, until February 28, 2023. Its ten model years hold 10,062 complaints, and the power train leads every one.

Recall 16V529 covers 2014-2015 Cherokees with the 9-speed automatic, where a transmission sensor issue led dealers to reprogram the engine and transmission computers. That 329,540-vehicle campaign also includes the 2015 Chrysler 200, Jeep Renegade and Ram ProMaster and the 2016 Fiat 500X.

Other KL recalls worth checking:

  • 23V338, park outside: a short in the power liftgate module on 2014-2016 Cherokees may start a fire, ignition on or off.
  • 15V041: side curtain and seat air bags on 2014-2015 Cherokees could deploy when they shouldn't.
  • 15V509: running the wipers on dry glass could damage the body control module on 2014 Cherokees.

KM, 2026: too new to judge

Jeep revived the Cherokee for 2026 on the STLA Large platform, built at Toluca, Mexico. Stellantis said production would move to Belvidere for the 2027 model year. NHTSA lists 7 complaints so far, far too few to read anything into.

Worth repairing, or time to sell?

Weigh the repair quote against what the Cherokee is worth running. On a KL with a failing 9-speed, that comparison often decides it.

  1. Look up open recalls on your VIN at NHTSA and ask a Jeep dealer about each one.
  2. Shifting hard, slipping or stuck in gear? Read our bad transmission guide before you approve a rebuild.
  3. An old XJ with high miles and rust? See old or high mileage and failed inspection or rust.

Selling a Cherokee whole

  1. Note the VIN, mileage and what's wrong.
  2. Request an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where it sits: driveway, street, field or shop lot, and whether the wheels turn.
  4. Leave every part on it. You sell the whole car as it sits, catalytic converter included.
  5. Bring the title and ID to pickup, and check after you sell for your state's plate rule.

Questions people ask

Why are there no Cherokee complaints for most of 2002-2013?
In North America, that SUV was sold as the Jeep Liberty, which Wikipedia says was done to tell it apart from the Grand Cherokee. Complaints for those years sit under the Liberty. The Cherokee name came back for the 2014 model year.
Which Cherokee years have the most NHTSA complaints?
In the October 10, 2026 count, the leaders are the 2014 (2,648), 2015 (1,789), 2019 (1,654), 2016 (1,409) and 2017 (1,336). On each of them the power train is the component named most.
Will you buy a Cherokee whose transmission won't shift?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Say whether it moves at all and whether it can roll in Neutral, so the right truck comes.
