Selling a dead or junk Jeep Grand Cherokee

When we checked on October 10, 2026, owners had logged 29,702 Grand Cherokee complaints with NHTSA. No other Jeep comes close. Of those, 616 report a fire and 61 report a death. A Grand Cherokee that's dead or needs more work than it's worth doesn't need repairs before you sell. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

What owners reported, generation by generation

ZJ, 1993-1998: shifter and fuel tank recalls

Wikipedia says the first Grand Cherokee launched in 1992 as a 1993 model, aimed at the luxury SUV buyer. These six years hold 4,774 complaints. From 1995 to 1998 the power train is the component owners name most: 403 of the 1998's 1,028 complaints. The 1998 also has 24 complaints that report a death, more than any other Grand Cherokee year.

Two recalls matter on a ZJ. Recall 02V053 covers SUVs where the shifter is not pushed fully into Park with the engine running, which can let the vehicle roll backward; dealers add a second detent to the shifter. Recall 13V252 deals with fuel tanks that could leak if the SUV is hit from behind. That 1,560,000-vehicle count also takes in 2002-2007 Liberty models.

WJ, 1999-2004: brakes, then air bags

The 1999 redesign shared just 127 parts with the ZJ, mostly fasteners. The WJ years hold 7,501 complaints. On the 1999, 554 of 1,638 name the hydraulic service brakes. On the 2000, it's 379 of 1,447.

From 2002 the air bags take over: 475 of 1,476 complaints on the 2002, 250 of 762 on the 2003, and 318 of 1,295 on the 2004. Recalls 12V527 and 15V046 both deal with the air bag control module on 2002-2004 Grand Cherokees, and both campaigns also cover 2002-2003 Liberty models. Recall 02V104 adds a manifold shield on 4.0-liter engines so debris can't build up at cylinder 3. That campaign's 1,115,322 vehicles include other 4.0-liter Jeeps.

WK, 2005-2010: the electrical years

The WK brought a 3.7-liter V6 in place of the old 4.0 straight-six, plus an optional 5.7 Hemi V8. It has 5,429 complaints, and the electrical system tops every single year. On the 2005, 811 of 2,051 complaints name it; on the 2006, 661 of 1,280; on the 2007, 580 of 1,108.

Recall 14V438 replaces the ignition switch on 2005-2007 models. The interim advice was to move the seat so your knee can't bump the key. Its 649,353 vehicles include the Commander. Recall 13V175 reflashes the controller that runs the transfer case on 2005-2010 Grand Cherokees and 2006-2010 Commanders.

WK2, 2011-2021: fires and brake boosters

Built in Detroit with a 3.6 Pentastar V6 or 5.7 Hemi, the WK2 is the biggest group: 9,973 complaints from 2011 to 2020. The 2014 has 2,380 complaints, the most of any year, and 18 recall campaigns. The 2012 has 105 complaints reporting a fire, also a high for the model; the 2011 has 61.

Water in the brake booster is the recall to know. Recall 14V154 added a water shield to the booster on 2011-2014 Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos, 646,498 vehicles across both. Recall 17V572 then went back to check that those shields were put on right. Recall 19V813 replaces a fuel pump relay on 2011-2013 models with the 3.6, 5.7 or 6.4 engine, again shared with the Durango.

WL, 2021 onward: the 4xe battery

The current Grand Cherokee uses an 8-speed automatic, and the 4xe adds a 17.3 kWh plug-in battery. The 2021-2026 years have 2,022 complaints so far. They've had less time to collect them. The 2022 already has 24 recall campaigns and the 2023 has 23. Recall 25V741 covers 4xe batteries that may fail inside and catch fire, parked or driving. Its 320,068 vehicles include the Wrangler 4xe.

Complaints and recalls for each model year

Owner complaint totals were tallied on October 10, 2026 from NHTSA's downloadable file. The recall column shows campaigns NHTSA lists for each year; a single campaign often spans several years and models.

Worth a repair bill?

Weigh the written estimate against the price a running Grand Cherokee of your year brings. If the quote gets close to the second number, selling it unrepaired usually wins. Then check these.

  1. Run your VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Recall work is done by dealers at no charge, and a WK or WK2 can have several open campaigns at once.
  2. Soft or hard brake pedal on a 2011-2014? Ask a dealer whether 14V154 and 17V572 were done. Our bad brakes guide covers the rest.
  3. Lights, gauges or no-starts on a 2005-2010? That's the WK's electrical pattern. See electrical problems for how to weigh a fix you can't pin down.
  4. Engine or transmission gone? The blown engine and bad transmission guides explain when the repair costs more than the SUV.

Selling your Grand Cherokee whole

  1. Write down the Grand Cherokee's VIN, mileage, what's wrong and if the wheels turn.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it sits and whether it can be pushed in Neutral. A 4xe with an open battery recall should stay parked outside until it's picked up.
  4. Leave it in one piece. You sell the whole car as it sits, so don't pull the wheels or converters first.
  5. The driver will need the Grand Cherokee title and your photo ID. Your state sets the plate rules; see after you sell.

Lost the title? Start with selling with no title. Other Jeeps we cover include the Commander, Liberty and Wrangler, or see all Jeep models.

Questions people ask

Which Grand Cherokee model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2014 leads with 2,380 in the October 10, 2026 count, followed by the 2005 (2,051), the 2012 (1,644), the 2011 (1,641) and the 1999 (1,638). A 2024 or 2025 Grand Cherokee is so new that its lower count doesn't tell much yet.
Does a high complaint count mean that year is the worst Grand Cherokee?
No. A Grand Cherokee complaint is a report an owner decided to file with NHTSA. It doesn't rate reliability or prove something failed. Read the count next to the recalls for that year, and look up your own VIN.
Will you buy a 4xe whose battery recall hasn't been fixed?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Bring up recall 25V741 in your offer request. The recall notice says to keep the SUV parked outdoors, clear of structures, and unplugged until the fix is in.
Do I have to strip parts off before I sell it?
No. You sell the whole car as it sits. Keep the wheels, converters and battery on the Grand Cherokee, and tell us up front if a part is gone.
