Selling a junk or non-running Jeep Liberty
The Liberty's first model year is still its most complained-about. NHTSA's file listed 1,808 owner complaints for the 2002 when we counted on October 10, 2026, and 447 of them name the suspension. Across all years, suspension leads every other component with 1,739 complaints. Wikipedia notes the Liberty was up for North American Truck of the Year for 2002, "though safety recalls persisted."

KJ, 2002-2007: control arms and air bags
The KJ replaced the XJ Cherokee and holds 7,453 of the Liberty's 8,875 complaints. Two components dominate.
The suspension. Suspension tops the 2003 (407 of 1,351), the 2004 (416 of 1,101) and the 2005 (234 of 1,118). The recalls line up with it, front and rear:
- 03V460 replaced front lower ball joints on 2002-2003 SUVs that could lose grease, corrode and separate from the steering knuckle. The 336,000-vehicle campaign may include other models.
- 06V288 replaced front lower ball joints on 2002-2006 trucks. Its 826,687 vehicles cover more than the Liberty.
- 09V119 replaced front upper control arms on 2002-2003 Liberties sold or registered in salt belt states. The notice counts 42,469 Liberty vehicles.
- 12V085 and 18V278 both replace rear lower control arms on 2004-2007 Liberties. The later notice says the arms can break from corrosion and cause a loss of control.
The air bags. Air bags lead the 2002 with 515 complaints and come second on the 2003 with 367. Recalls 12V527 and 15V046 both fix the air bag control module on 2002-2003 Liberties, and both campaigns include 2002-2004 Grand Cherokees. Recall 15V673 covers 2003 Liberties built March 29 to July 3, 2003, along with some 2004 Grand Cherokees.
Two more apply to every KJ year. Recall 13V252 checks the rear structure because the tank could leak when the SUV is struck from behind. The campaign totals 1,560,000 vehicles and covers 1993-1998 Grand Cherokees as well. And on the 2006 and 2007, the complaint category NHTSA calls visibility moves to the top: 366 of 1,372 and 196 of 703.
The diesel KJ, the CRD, left the US market because it couldn't meet the 2007 diesel emissions rules, Wikipedia says.
KK, 2008-2012: fewer complaints, one air bag spike
The Liberty was redesigned for 2008 alongside the Dodge Nitro, and debuted at the 2007 New York auto show. These five years hold 1,412 complaints together, fewer than the 2002 alone. The fuel system and electrical system lead the 2008. Then the 2012, the last year, jumps to 385 complaints, with 162 naming the air bags. Recall 17V640 replaces a part of the restraint controller on 2012 Liberties that could keep the active head restraints from working.
Liberty complaints and recalls, year by year
Tallied from owner complaint records on October 10, 2026. Recall campaigns often reach across model years and onto other vehicles, so the column overlaps.

Fix the Liberty, or let it go?
The newest Liberty is a 2012, so most are long past their warranty. Hold the estimate up against the price of a running Liberty. When the quote is close to that number, selling it whole makes more sense.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. Suspension and air bag recalls are done by dealers at no charge.
- Clunks, wander or a failed inspection for worn front-end parts? Our broken suspension guide walks through it.
- Rust on the arms or underbody? See failed inspection or rust and rotted frame.
Selling your Liberty whole
- Have ready the VIN, the mileage and what's wrong.
- Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it is and whether all four wheels turn. A broken control arm can mean it won't roll, which the truck needs to know.
- Keep it whole. Leave the parts on, and say if anything is already missing.
- When the truck arrives, give the driver your title and keys, and show ID. Check after you sell for your state's plate rule.
