Selling a worn-out Jeep J-Series pickup

NHTSA's complaint file holds not one owner complaint for the Jeep J-Series pickup, counted as of October 10, 2026. Its recall list for the truck has just two entries, one about brake fluid and one about cruise control.

The J-10 and J-20 in the data

EPA's file covers 1984 through 1988 and splits the truck into J-10 and J-20 pickups, each with two- or four-wheel drive. All are gasoline trucks in EPA's standard pickup class. Wikipedia's Jeep article gives Jeep's pickup models their own section, ending in 1988, the same year this truck leaves EPA's data. American Motors owned Jeep for most of that run; Chrysler bought the brand from AMC in 1987.

Two recalls, years apart

1986: brake fluid. Campaign 85V140 covers trucks that may have left the factory with contaminated brake fluid. NHTSA's notice warns this can affect the whole braking system, up to complete brake failure. The remedy was to flush and refill the system. The campaign lists 230 vehicles.

1987: cruise control. Campaign 87V022 covers a cruise control module that could work inconsistently. The remedy was a new module where needed. Its 3,996 vehicles may include other Jeep models.

Newer model years usually have had less time to collect complaints. Here even the oldest show none, so the file tells you little about how these trucks wear.

Keep it running, or sell it?

Put the VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 1986, the brake fluid campaign is worth a look, and if the brakes have locked up or failed, our bad brakes guide covers the choices. A truck that has sat for years has its own checklist in sitting for years. Then compare the repair estimate, in writing, with the local price of a J-10 or J-20 that runs.

Selling a J-Series pickup whole

  1. Write down the VIN and whether it's a J-10 or J-20, two- or four-wheel drive.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the parking spot and say if it rolls. A pickup in a tight spot is fine; the driver just needs to know.
  4. Leave it whole, bed and wheels included.
  5. The title goes with the truck, and you'll show your photo ID at pickup. Lost title? See selling with no title.

Two. Campaign 85V140 covers 1986 trucks that may have been built with contaminated brake fluid; the remedy was a flush and refill. Campaign 87V022 covers a 1987 cruise control module that could work inconsistently; the remedy was a new module where needed. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to check.
Will you buy a J-20 that's been parked for years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, pickups included. It goes as one piece, just as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
